Escape in, Eclipse out

Voted Worlds #1 Most Loonatic Fanbase

Totally agree; they need to play what the fans really want to hear. A 30 year old album coming back on the charts is just huge. Fans are picking that over Eclipse and the band should acknowledge that. Eclipse may be a great album musically, but it doesn't have the commercial appeal of Escape. A 30th anniversary Escape tour would appeal to the old fans and newer fans from the DSB craze. IMO, they would be more likely to go pick up Eclipse after the Escape show than the other way around.

The shows are selling based on a triple bill of 3 well known names.

An "Escape 30 Tour" might have only required 1 opening act and allowed for a longer set. Drop one new Eclipse song in the set and advertise the upcoming CD (even show the artwork on the screen) - then follow up with the actual Eclipse tour later in the year.

That would have been better promotion for the CD than WalMart has given it and there is a precident for it (Rush, KISS) as I mentioned in another thread.

JOURNEY Passing On Performing 'Escape' For 30th Anniversary - July 6, 2011

According to The Pulse Of Radio, JOURNEY co-founder and guitarist Neal Schon says that the band is too busy touring behind new music to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their mega-platinum "Escape" album.

The Pulse Of Radio asked Schon point blank if, with such a momentous anniversary happening this summer, he even considered touring behind "Escape"'s 30th birthday. "No," he said. "I've seen what's been going on at some concerts with some bands and they're playing the whole record — I mean surely, we could do that at some point, but that's not happening this year or next year, 'cause we're here to support our new record. And, y'know, play bits and pieces from 'Escape', and all the other records that, y'know, that we're playing."

I applaud the hell out of the band for this.

Escape is charting right now, Eclipse is not.
But it's all good. Foreigner, Night Ranger, Journey. Good triple bill there.
It's also Foreigner 4's 30th anniversary. 1981 was a good year.

Capitalize on this how? As previously stated the tour/venues are already booked. The concert tickets are selling. I am no marketing wiz, but how exactly are they going to capitalize on Escape's sudden resurgance any further. I suppose they could possibly fill a few open dates of the tour schedule with Escape anniversary shows, but beyond that I just don't see it. I could understand if the concerts tickets weren't selling, but from what I have seen they are, and they always do.

Maybe you guys are seeing $$$ opportunities here that I am not. Give me some examples because like I said I am no marketing/sales guy.

Without Eclipse and Escape being under the same label, there's not much to exploit. If Eclipse could have been sold with a bonus disc commemorating the anniversary of Escape, perhaps you get another 100,000 sales but not much else. Maybe a bonus of only have one opening act/ longer set time too as you promote old meets new - Escape meets Eclipse, yada, yada, yada.
But that is all hindsight. The way Wal-Mart stocked Eclipse, no one saw it being such a flop at retail. Of course it wasn't going to be platinum but to only sell 50,000 copies after six weeks? Horrid.
If Wal-Mart thought that disc needed help, I'm sure someone in their marketing dept would have suggested a bonus disc tied to Escape or what ever they could get away with without stepping on Columbia's toes.
No one in management ever saw Eclipse failing at retail the way it has.

Obviously it's too late now. It's not like they didn't know when the 30th anniversary of the album was going to be though.

Tickets are selling, but KISS did the 35th Anniversary of ALIVE before their new album was released and didn't need to be on a triple bill. Rush just did The Time Machine tour (all hits) and released 2 new songs from their upcoming CD on iTunes and played one live. Both tours plugged an upcoming new release while selling well without help.

Different kind of bands sure, but compare Journey's lifetime record sales to both. They shouldn't need to be on a triple bill.

Ship has sailed on this one. Could be wrong, but my instincts say they missed an opportunity here.

AR's right on. I think this would have ultimately helped Eclipse. Maybe if they could have toured in support of Escape (because apparently there is promo for it once again) Journey could have released Eclipse closer to the end of the tour --- maybe they could have released a single or two to iTunes? I'm not marketing genius myself, but I just can't help to think there is a missed opportunity here.

At any rate, I think it's very cool to see Escape charting!

They would have been better off doing the Escape 30 year tour and inflicting the paying audience with "free" copies of Eclipse like they did with Generations. Don't know if the deal they used to fleece Best Buy would prohibit that though.

Since the Escape 30 tour may be too late, it isn't too late to capitalize on Jon Cain's 30th anniversary with the band. They should hand him the microphone every night and have him sing either Turnaround Tokyo or Too Far Gone.

That's actually not a bad idea. Showcase him, letting him sing a song, congratulating him on his 30 years and his accomplishments. That's not as doable with a 3 band show, but I do think that is a good idea.

Wait, is the point getting people to the show or keeping them away, because the thought of Jon singing makes me wanna stay home.

They could let the guy just sing one. Just to congratulate him on his 30 years. I think the fans would be into it.

I'm actually sitting here doing Bacardi shots with my wife and son. Boring afternoon here in SoCal. Got some lowrider music playing, getting ready to fry up some fish and chips for dinner.

Only 15 albums sold 20k or more this week. Really, really bad. I expect Eclipse to re-renter the chart by default next week as the overall sales numbers get lower and lower.
