That Today crowd would have loved Anything Is Possible. It's a shame they didn't play it. The performances were okay.

No, you're right. Saw them here in Irvine this past Saturday night and IMO, it was ugly. The set list is brutal and carries no flow. Arnel's vocals were drowned in the mix, and, Deen's vocals were very apparent.

In all the times that I've seen Journey since the 80s, I've NEVER heard them as loud as they were on Saturday night, almost as if they were trying to hide the vocals. The canned vocals were so perfect (and loud) that they overpowered Arnel at times.

Foreigner certainly carried the night; they were amazing.

EDIT
Just watched the video of this morning's performance and one thing that stands out is the difference between the band HAVING the canned backgrounds and not. HUGE difference not using them on AWYWI this morning.

+1 :? :( :?
Is it just me, or was I watching a totally different Today Show than everyone else? Parts of DSB were absolutely cringe-worthy. I'm perfectly willing to chalk it up to tight scheduling & lack of time to properly warm up, but ... woooooo.

Friga was dashing as usual. Neal fucked up the beginning to City of Hope.Song is okay, lyrics are a little cheesey,Friga had his hand in it i suspect.Arnel was screaching some notes, the accent is still there, and he still drags and butchers Faithfully.I heard bits and pieces of songs through out the show. Were where you, Hopelessly in love, over all it was pretty good for Journey in the morning. The shows thev ve done in the past there wernt very good. Neals nose is getting bigger and more wrinkled> Ross didnt look any more rubbery than usual, and didnt here anything from Dean. He was the bands savior

In 2008, the guy could just power though everything. Even at the end of the tour , when he was tired he just brought it every night. 2009 saw the accent issues diminish but so did the strength of the performances.
This year, the performances are rough AND the accent is back.
A question for those with educated ears out there, was this mini gig stepped down? Has Journey ever done that on T.V. before?
During Arnel's off time he sings in full key so for the band not to do that for these few songs in front of a national audience seems odd, especially if this is their last T.V. appearance for the rest of the tour.

And oh yeah, Neal skanked it during the beginning of COH, not sure what happened there. A couple Bloody Marys might have helped him this morning, for sure.

Upping the tempo to Faithfully would take a lot of the mechanical delivery out of it. It just seems s l o w. Hell, Arnel sang it better wit The Zoo!

Yeah, I've said it before but it bares repeating. Faithfully sucks when it is sang like this.

I totally agree with you. The song is fun and and has a summer vibe.
Stop forcing COH down everybody's throat, it's not the next DSB. Hang it up already with that song.

Question. I heard second hand that Journey was given a song of the century award for DSB and it had Arnel's picture. Granted I understand he is in the band now, but STEVE and his amazing vocals are what made it a hit. Does anyone know if Steve was asked to be up there?

Steve is the one collecting money from that song, not Arnel. I wouldn't worry about whose picture is on some makeshift award.

It was an odd moment for sure, but when your 'has been' lead singer refuses to participate in any capacity with the other members he's alienated (and lied to), I guess it's only fair to remove him from the picture.

I actually even enjoyed City of Hope, which isn't my favorite song. But live it sounded catchy.

I have the show taping at home... what else has been played... at 725A it was cool to see journey jamming already otuside on the plaza... I couldnt tell, big crowd or medium size... the 5 minutes I was able to watch before going to work... lots of journey signs... cool...

They said the crowd was big and wrapped around to the next street, I think. I don't have a real criticism of his vocals, as I see others do on here. I didn't hear the fourth song, though, so can't comment on that one. I knew they were on the road and flying straight in for the early morning gig. I expected the vocals to be a little tired. But they didn't. He sounded strong to me. .

HOW WAS THAT???
My old bass player was playing with them. Great player.

Hard to tell, because I was in the kitchen when it was on. My wife yelled in that they were playing it. I peaked in for a few seconds. Band sounded good, but the singing...m'eh. It was all about the crowd sing-a-long.

Journey is getting lit up on the Today Show's Facebook page. This band still brings out the fire in people, doesn't it?

Here's what I don't get; they were off for SIX weeks from April 16th to June 4th. The release date of the Eclipse fell in right at the end of that rest. My question is why didn't they rest for a few weeks and then hit these morning shows at full tilt??? They could have stayed in New York for a few days and got themselves ready for a great performance at that early hour. Instead, they traveled all night after a gig, got no sleep and performed 4 songs with a tired vocalist. I just can't imagine their management doing anything worse than they have. The Eclipse release and promo have been an utter failure. Just a terrible, terrible job of promoting an excellent effort. Going from Minnesota last night, to New York today and then back to Chicago tonight is just, well, dumb!

I don't know when the NBC Today Show summer series starts, but that is a coveted gig. CBS, like they were on before, lowest ratings of all of those shows, a far distant third and much easier to get on. I doubt they had a lot of leeway on the time period of which Fridays were open on the summer series. It's not like they're Lady Gaga.

Late night may have allowed them to play new material. Perhaps 3 songs, 2 of them being new. These early morning shows are all women, and they want to hear the old stuff. Some 20-30 year old dude getting in from the bar during late night shows probably wouldn't give a fuck.

Faithfully was dreadful.
Hate the way he oversings on certain notes, and his timing (even after being onboard for over 3 years) is still bloody awful.
I agree with what someone said earlier, that he sang Faithfully way better in the Zoo.

Maybe it's time to dump the song. Nobody but Perry could emote that song properly. I think it has more to do with
the way the band tunes it and the BG vocals, than it has to do with Pineda's ability to sing it??? It's not as difficult of
a song to sing as others he does quite well.

Eclipse is an extraordinary record and really does demonstrate the band in fine form, IMHO, but Journey continues to fumble the ball when it comes to live performances.
Not to jump on the bandwagon about Arnel's accent, because he clearly has a set of pipes on him, but it's distracting. I heard him in '08 and '09 and he pulled off all the songs better than what I heard here.

I think it's a combination of mental and physical fatigue. Probably accounts for the lyric stumbles he's had also.
I really believe Arnel had high expectations for Eclipse. He's seen great success at retail for the first two products under his tenure (Revelation and the Manila DVD); this time out, it's not been an easy ride and I think he may putting pressure upon himself to to try and SELL the new material every time he sings a new song instead of just letting each performance come naturally.

It's definitely ambitious sonically, but I have high standards and they need to raise their game, starting with what new songs to include in the set.
The pipes are still there, but he needs to start adding emphasizing polish rather than power.

I am glad the boys made it on the show but I was not impressed at all with Arnel today. He seems to b going in a backwards direction. Accent was bad and oversinging those notes is just horrible. I hate it too because I was really impressed 2 years ago. Neal and Dean were great as usual except for the COH screw up.
