I think it just depends on your perspective and background. Bill and Matt are both seasoned concert goers. However, I'd say that Matt is a bit more discerning, being a guitar player and musician. He's looking for nuances and technical issues. Bill is probably a bit more reflective of the casual fan, in that he probably feeds off of the crowd, its energy and is more interested in singing along than dissecting individual performances. In the end, neither is right and neither is wrong. They're just "hearing" different elements.

It sounded awkward.

Exactly what I though. I told my wife he's "Meatloafing". Meatloaf does this and draws out the lyrics and turns a 12 minute song into an 18 minute song. But his band plays off of him and delays the music too.
That's the main reason in my review of the Detroit show stating that Arnel is much better on the upbeat tunes. He sucks at the ballads.

you seem to have an intimate knowledge of both of these concert-goers? Is it by chance due to the fact that you attended a concert with both of these fellows couple years ago ?![]()

While I totally agree with this, then the Perry freaks would just say "OMG! He's just imitating Perry, can't he do anything himself??"

That's what was so interesting to me last night about my sister's and girlfriend's reactions. My buddy who I also took with me enjoyed the show and was not too critical.
But, both my sister and girlfriend have seen Frontiers a few times too and they both thought Jeremey/Frontiers were way better/more entertaining. As I said in the original review, they both made those remarks before I ever shared my thoughts (because I wanted to see what they really thought free of my diehard Journey fan influence). My sister knows The Essential Journey and my girlfriend knows DSB, Faithfully, and Anyway You Want It, so they are at different points on the casual fan spectrum. But, they both were very underwhelmed and found the performance lackluster.
So, it's not necessarily just diehard fans or musical types like me who are nitpicking the performance. Other, way more casual fans reacted the same way.

I've long argued that "making the songs his own" (most parroted from the Soto crowd), is a really fucking stupid idea. The songs are sing along songs, and the cadence and delivery have to be like the original. That's why parts of the ROR tour were so awful. Perry destroyed the intimate element of the song by phrasing differently and changing the tempo. I listen to ROR bootlegs and I just don't hear "Journey" all the time. So I can definitely relate to this.

Lou Gramm used to drive me crazy in concert phrasing songs differently than on the records. I have all the respect in the world for Lou as a vocalist, but Kelly Hansen actually sticks to the original recordings without taking those liberties.

Even though I'm relatively happy with Journey's performance last night, it was NOT one of my favorite shows of theirs by any stretch.
They should have played at least 3 more songs on the night.
I wonder if perhaps the reason that they played a short set was because the humidity at the venue was off-the-charts high last night!!! I was drenched with sweat just sitting there, as were most of the crowd. All 3 bands made mention of how hot and sticky it was last night. I felt like I was in the rain-forest.
But, like I mentioned, I wish that Journey had played 2 more from Eclipse. And I wish they had thrown in something like "Edge Of the Blade" "Where Were You" "Chain Reaction" or one of the other more Rocking songs that wasn't a major hit.

I think it's because when it comes to classic rock, we all want to hear it like we remember it. Most fans love to sing along, and it's hard to do when they change it around too much. I'm guilty of liking it to be as close to the original as it can be also. But for some, they see that as a karaoke fill in, so it IS a no win situation.

Well, let me ask you this... were you disappointed enough to act like you weren't enjoying them? Were you actively complaining during the performance? Or sharing your disappointment during the concert? Because I know that it's VERY difficult to be subjective and actually enjoy anything when someone in your "group" is not enjoying themselves. I've experienced that with my own husband, during a movie when I can tell he thinks it sucks!I think it's funny or good, but it's hard to enjoy when I know he's next to me completely bored or hating it. It DOES affect how you feel.
I can only go by what I saw in Cleveland last time they toured there. And it was a stadium full of people dancing, and singing to the music..... are you telling me that did not happen this time? The masses sat there bored and perplexed at what they were watching? I find that hard to believe! You are 3 people, and maybe even a little biased by your Jeremey love?Is that possible?

This is just baffling. Night Ranger is starting about 15 minutes early and Journey is finishing 15 minutes early.Get your shit coordinated, guys!
I think this is worth mentioning ... Kelly Hansen has an easy gig. He has a pretty hard catalog to sing, but he doesn't seem to let it all go when he sings, like Lou did. Because of that, he's basically singing songs he's heard a million times and he's not singing them at full tilt. Also, and I find this deplorable, but they're playing zero new music. At the very least, last night, they should have played a new song or two. They were playing for a radio audience that was fairly large and spanned parts of the globe. When I heard them play In Pieces a little over a year ago it was simply awesome. What a great song, and it comes across as well as any song in their catalog, live. To get out there and play no new songs, under last night's circumstances, is nothing more than "mailing it in."
Honestly, this should have been a two-headed monster with just Foreigner and Journey, each playing 90 minutes, or about 18 songs.
