I think he was banned from here. I know there are ways around that, but he hasn't been back that I know of.
Yoda wrote:For me, I wish the Journey name could be passed on to a younger generation of musicians - someone in their early 20's who would be willing to join the band under the tutelage (musically) of the older members, be willing to carry out the "legacy sound" of the band with their own spin on the sound (gotta have it somewhat attractive to the new audience), and be willing to carry on a new generation of the band in an attempt to keep this AOR genre moving along. I would think at this point, this would be something very attractive to even Steve Perry, because he could still be a part of this band without having to be "actively" touring with the other guys. Schon, Cain, and Perry could still write material for the band, even if it was just to get the new guys started, and be in the "background" while receiving some type of credits and compensation from the band after they have all officially "retired". I suppose what I'm talking about here is "franchising" the name, making it into more of a business than just simply a rock band, but I think for this genre to survive, you have to have some of these bigger name acts keeping themselves active - at least in name alone. Most of the big name 80's acts don't have their original members touring with them anymore anyway, so I think this would just be a good next step in making sure that these big name acts stay relevant for years to come.
In my opinion, the only reason why these bands haven't continued on with radio success is simply that they are not young. So, having the proper replacement artists who have youth on their side would attract the younger crowd again, just like they did in their heyday, and would keep the band rolling. For us, it's all about the music, the sound that takes us back to our "younger" days. Younger musicians in these bands putting out a new generation of the music would still give us older ones that same feeling, but also cater to the younger generation who would want to make the new Journey a part of their youth (because again, the band would be "young"!)
I know it's pretty far fetched, and most probably wouldn't ever go for such a thing, but I would support it.

I'm thinking more in terms of loading Journey up with a new generation that would carry on the music - and I'm not talking about playing Don't Stop Believing for another 30 years...I'm talking about a new breed of Journey branded music.

The best possibility for what you propose right now is the Queen Extravaganza. Because Marc Martel is a unbelievable vocal doppelganger for Freddy Mercury it would be EASY for the remaining Queen members to write new songs and simply have the Queen Extravaganza do them... But they won't... because without Freddy's lyrical contribution.. it just ain't the same.
New Journey music has to be written by someone.. in Journey's case it must be JC, NS and SP, because absent that trio writing together, there are no NEW Journey branded hit songs. Simply adding "pro" songwriters like Diane Warren or Desmond Child would only dilute & destroy Journey's songs... just as it did for Aerosmith.
Further, today's music market is a singles market, and the last time Journey had bonafide "hits" (meaning singles) was 30 years ago with that original trio of writers. Without that trio of writers together again writing hit songs, there is no reason for a "Journey reloaded" band member wise...

I think you overlooked the part in my first post where I said, Neal, Jon, and even Perry could continue writing songs for the band. The "original" members would still be a driving force in the creation of the music, with the new guys sitting in and learning and at least trying to get a feel of the chemistry. This would be a vital part of the process of choosing the right group of members who would replace the older guys. The new guys could, of course, contribute to the song writing as well, but in the beginning, it would be mostly Neal, Jon, and Steve writing the songs, giving the new guys direction on how they would write Journey music. I said earlier that this would probably be attractive to Steve, because he can still write music, he wouldn't have to perform live, they wouldn't even have to be together in one room (although that would probably produce the best results).
As time progresses, more of the song writing can be turned over to the new Journey musicians, with an agreement that the original guys would always get some sort of % from sales, money from touring, merchandise, etc... for, say, ten years or until the new members fulfill whatever record deal agreement they may have, then the new members officially take over all aspects of the band. By that point, the "new" Journey has either taken hold and produced success, won over new fans and old fans alike, or they didn't. It's an attempt to keep this genre going with a household name that almost every fan of music knows about. I'm sure realistically, it would be a shot in the dark and probably would have more of a chance failing miserably than succeeding, but let's face it, these guys aren't going to be able to tour and be active for another 30 years, and I think it's about time that someone figured out a way where certain genres of music never die.

My apologies.. I missed that part...
Noble idea.. but Perry wouldn't do it.

Don wrote:There is absolutely no need for this. With the exception of DSB and to a lesser degree AWYWI, Journey has been very diligent on their licensing agreements, not oversaturating the market with their material despite hundreds of requests a year to do just that. The last few years have seen a few Journey tunes end up on soundtracks but not just your run of the mill films. WCN was in Aliens vs Monsters, a film that has sold over ten million DVDs. Journey gets paid a license fee up front that is not constrained by royalty rates and then to add to it they get royalties for every DVD sold and every airing of that movie in syndication. The same with Grown Ups using The Party's Over. That movie gets heavy syndication now too and each showing is more money for the band. That's really only a small percentage of what Journey has going on with licensing and I haven't even mentioned the rest of the world market where Journey music gets used in film and commercials.
You've already got a Journey Extravaganza with the band itself. Only two of the active members control 99% of what constitutes the creative and financial decisions of the current band. When they go out there now, they are faceless, a lot like Queen is. If I'm Perry, I'm perfectly happy with the way things are now; with such an underused catalog still waiting to be exposed no need to try and stretch it further by adding more people to take from the pie or wasting money on new material that might not be a hit no matter who the writers are. Use the gold that you've already got in your vault instead.
