The next album should return to the Cain/Schon partnership rather than one man being dominant. 'Resonate' is the best song off the album and by Schon's own admission, came almost entirely from Cain with Schon simply providing direction. Essentially, Schon needs to say "dude, go get me a rock song" and let Cain work his magic.

Also, the duets and stuff. No reason for Deen's angelic pipes to be entirely relegated to muted backing vox.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Bullshit. For all you know, Ritual is a leftover from an Arrival writing session. Anything Is Possible and Someone are both as commercial as the band has ever sounded.

I would like to think they would do one last album with Perry as a nice farewell. An album with 15 songs and maybe one last concert for DVD. They are getting on in age and it's hard to see them going on for too much longer without having to change the line up. Maybe 5 more years touring at the maximum I would think.

As much as I've liked the singers since Perry, the quality isn't there in the studio. I've been listening to a lot of Journey lately and Steve Perry's voice is what makes the songs as good as they are. Yes the music is there, but the passion comes out in Perry's singing and there is feeling behind it. The same can't be said for Arnel Pineda or Steve Augeri. Just listening to Eclipse again yesterday after listening to Trial By Fire, Raised on Radio, Escape... Eclipse singing was boring for half the album and didn't make you feel like getting into the music at all. I think having Perry and Cain writing, they can get a better blend of music.

I feel that Journey should put out an album featuring Latin rhythms.

You know... I think an album done with the CLASSIC Journey sound (Escape and Frontiers sound is classic Journey to me) with Deen handling ALL lead vocals would sound fantastic. Spend the time in the studio and layer the shit out of the vocals. Give us another Separate Ways, Send Her My Love, Chain Reaction, and that album would ROCK!!!!! :D

For me, I wish the Journey name could be passed on to a younger generation of musicians - someone in their early 20's who would be willing to join the band under the tutelage (musically) of the older members, be willing to carry out the "legacy sound" of the band with their own spin on the sound (gotta have it somewhat attractive to the new audience), and be willing to carry on a new generation of the band in an attempt to keep this AOR genre moving along. I would think at this point, this would be something very attractive to even Steve Perry, because he could still be a part of this band without having to be "actively" touring with the other guys. Schon, Cain, and Perry could still write material for the band, even if it was just to get the new guys started, and be in the "background" while receiving some type of credits and compensation from the band after they have all officially "retired". I suppose what I'm talking about here is "franchising" the name, making it into more of a business than just simply a rock band, but I think for this genre to survive, you have to have some of these bigger name acts keeping themselves active - at least in name alone. Most of the big name 80's acts don't have their original members touring with them anymore anyway, so I think this would just be a good next step in making sure that these big name acts stay relevant for years to come.

In my opinion, the only reason why these bands haven't continued on with radio success is simply that they are not young. So, having the proper replacement artists who have youth on their side would attract the younger crowd again, just like they did in their heyday, and would keep the band rolling. For us, it's all about the music, the sound that takes us back to our "younger" days. Younger musicians in these bands putting out a new generation of the music would still give us older ones that same feeling, but also cater to the younger generation who would want to make the new Journey a part of their youth (because again, the band would be "young"!)

I know it's pretty far fetched, and most probably wouldn't ever go for such a thing, but I would support it.

The hit songs of yesteryear are not the hit songs of today... and Journeys songs were written for an era of albums that included "filler"... today is a singles world...

simply loading Journey up with younger, good looking guys would not make them viable again..

I'm thinking more in terms of loading Journey up with a new generation that would carry on the music - and I'm not talking about playing Don't Stop Believing for another 30 years...I'm talking about a new breed of Journey branded music.

So am I...

The best possibility for what you propose right now is the Queen Extravaganza. Because Marc Martel is a unbelievable vocal doppelganger for Freddy Mercury it would be EASY for the remaining Queen members to write new songs and simply have the Queen Extravaganza do them... But they won't... because without Freddy's lyrical contribution.. it just ain't the same.

New Journey music has to be written by someone.. in Journey's case it must be JC, NS and SP, because absent that trio writing together, there are no NEW Journey branded hit songs. Simply adding "pro" songwriters like Diane Warren or Desmond Child would only dilute & destroy Journey's songs... just as it did for Aerosmith.

Further, today's music market is a singles market, and the last time Journey had bonafide "hits" (meaning singles) was 30 years ago with that original trio of writers. Without that trio of writers together again writing hit songs, there is no reason for a "Journey reloaded" band member wise...

A new album will only happen if Neal pushes for one. I see no signs of that happening anytime in the near future.

I think you overlooked the part in my first post where I said, Neal, Jon, and even Perry could continue writing songs for the band. The "original" members would still be a driving force in the creation of the music, with the new guys sitting in and learning and at least trying to get a feel of the chemistry. This would be a vital part of the process of choosing the right group of members who would replace the older guys. The new guys could, of course, contribute to the song writing as well, but in the beginning, it would be mostly Neal, Jon, and Steve writing the songs, giving the new guys direction on how they would write Journey music. I said earlier that this would probably be attractive to Steve, because he can still write music, he wouldn't have to perform live, they wouldn't even have to be together in one room (although that would probably produce the best results).

As time progresses, more of the song writing can be turned over to the new Journey musicians, with an agreement that the original guys would always get some sort of % from sales, money from touring, merchandise, etc... for, say, ten years or until the new members fulfill whatever record deal agreement they may have, then the new members officially take over all aspects of the band. By that point, the "new" Journey has either taken hold and produced success, won over new fans and old fans alike, or they didn't. It's an attempt to keep this genre going with a household name that almost every fan of music knows about. I'm sure realistically, it would be a shot in the dark and probably would have more of a chance failing miserably than succeeding, but let's face it, these guys aren't going to be able to tour and be active for another 30 years, and I think it's about time that someone figured out a way where certain genres of music never die.

There is absolutely no need for this. With the exception of DSB and to a lesser degree AWYWI, Journey has been very diligent on their licensing agreements, not oversaturating the market with their material despite hundreds of requests a year to do just that. The last few years have seen a few Journey tunes end up on soundtracks but not just your run of the mill films. WCN was in Aliens vs Monsters, a film that has sold over ten million DVDs. Journey gets paid a license fee up front that is not constrained by royalty rates and then to add to it they get royalties for every DVD sold and every airing of that movie in syndication. The same with Grown Ups using The Party's Over. That movie gets heavy syndication now too and each showing is more money for the band. That's really only a small percentage of what Journey has going on with licensing and I haven't even mentioned the rest of the world market where Journey music gets used in film and commercials.
You've already got a Journey Extravaganza with the band itself. Only two of the active members control 99% of what constitutes the creative and financial decisions of the current band. When they go out there now, they are faceless, a lot like Queen is. If I'm Perry, I'm perfectly happy with the way things are now; with such an underused catalog still waiting to be exposed no need to try and stretch it further by adding more people to take from the pie or wasting money on new material that might not be a hit no matter who the writers are. Use the gold that you've already got in your vault instead.

I knew Journey had licensed out a few of their songs, but I never realized how many of their songs are licensed out. Thinking about it now, they have a song in the Tron movie (the newest one and the old one too), that movie Monster, the insurance commercial, Glee, etc....

I think my whole vision of this was strictly from the fan perspective, and from a perspective of someone who loves this genre of music so much, that I just feel once a band like Journey calls it quits, then I don't really see any other bands stepping up and keeping the genre active. It's probably a genre that's on life support as it is, but I think about the other bands that I associate with Journey; Survivor, Starship, Boston, REO Speedwagon, etc... I know these bands are actively touring, but I don't hear any new music from them - at least not on a regular basis. Not enough to feel like I have those bands to fall back on. Survivor can't seem to get themselves together to put out new music, nothing from Starship, Boston has always had a problem with putting out new music on a timely basis, and REO Speedwagon's last album was a few years ago......I guess my thoughts were, if there were young musicians who loved this genre and were eager to step in and keep these bands' style of music rolling for years to come, we fans would have something to look forward to. That's why I appreciate guys like Jeff Scott Soto and the work he's done with his solo albums and the projects with the guys from Work of Art. I just wonder how much it would hurt artists like them if a band like Journey decided to call it quits?

I'm kind of curious as to how many songs Journey has written that have never made any of their records from the Post Perry era. I remember reading somewhere (might be here) that they had like 30 songs written for Arrival alone.

an old friend of mine who used to work for them told me they have a warehouse full of audio and video... they recorded everything...

but it will likely never see the light of day..

Man, if that's true, then they are probably sitting on a goldmine!

The next album needs to be Cain & Schon getting access to all of Perry's 'sketches' and retooling them a bit. And whether Perry sings or not, let him produce the album. This could be the only way Perry will ever make another record, and the band would benefit too. Win-Win.

With Neal probably spending some time with Santana after this tour, when would be a good time to launch another album? Is there a good time or was Eclipse the end of the line?
