I went back and re-read the original article. I think you're right, Arnel was being gracious, well done!

Man it's hard to argue opinions and win isn't it! :)

I've listened to the clips a few times now. I had the same thought at TNC, the Journey stuff was detuned so much the songs were hard to recogize. However, I enjoyed them same as you. Even though Steve wasn't hitting that original key, there is something magic in his pipes. Did I like the Journey stuff, yes. Would I have liked it in the original key better, yes!

The key discussion made chuckle. There are no bad or good keys, just like you said. For me, the higher keys change the message of the song being delivered. Higher keys for me convey happier, brighter music while lower keys convey negativity. I think that is why I really enjoy vocals in the higher range or keys. Maybe this is part of TNC's thoughts?

The comparisons of Journey and Creed come to mind. Standard tune guitars vs. drop D tuned guitars change the message that comes through. That is likely one of the key reasons why I thought Eclipse sucked ass! (I'm still miffed at how Mac can give Eclipse a 100 and Somewhere in California an equal 100, wow :) )

Carry on ....

Steven Tyler never went into self-imposed exile for decades and has toured consistently. No comparison.

Oh I bet. Maybe someone should loop the Perry/Eels performance and burn it on a cd for all of you Loons. As it is, you are pretending it is waaay more than it really is.

Tyler did use some tapes for a while though. So maybe he should have. In any case, that's not my point. Are you saying the only way anyone should be able to enjoy Steve is if he had of stayed active? Then his voice would be ok to enjoy? But not if he went away? I'll notify my ears.

Unrecognizable? Seriously? Ok. Now I know you are insane. Songs sounded fine to me. Of course the listener knows they are not as high as 1978-1981.

What am I pretending it is? Spell it out. Me specifically.

In no way, shape, or form have I come close to condemning anyone for liking Perry's performance. It's this sort of reading comprehension deficiency that typically does lead to one of my lengthy "I'm right, you're wrong" posts and reaffirms the reputation Loons have for being some of the dumbest motherfuckers on the internet.

Your beef is with TNC, not with me and the ass chewing you'll get from him is bad enough; why would you invite more?

Ha ha ha ha? Actually, it's pretty lame. Why don't you ladies have a maxipad or two or three? We all know that Stevie's voice makes you as moist as your favorite food group (i.e. Betty Crocker Brownies).

The so called loons, myself among them, have been accused of living in the past. Yet strangely enough we accept that Steve's voice has changed. Since the songs were built around STEVE'S voice, shouldn't they also change? Who then is living in the past? Moving on.

Who are you calling a lady?? Ha ha, wow dude. Might want to find out who you are talking to first. Honestly, I think you and your comments are pretty darn lame. Heaven forbid if people enjoy Perry's peformances. You can enjoy Arnel and Journey, I will take Perry w/ Journey anyday. As far as the maxipad...you can use it yourself. I wouldnt get caught dead as a dude, making a comment to a lady like that. Really degratory and inappropriate.

There are some people here that have never learned to communicate properly in life. They resort to name calling and the like. When it was done in a comedic sense (i.e. Dean) it at least served a purpose. But when it's because you have no points to argue or you sincerely see the rest of humankind as beneath you, it's just unintelligent and childish. I often wonder if these folks are as miserable in their real life as they are on this forum. With some, I suspect they are and I feel sad for them. And I feel sorry for the family and friends around them.

Until Perry unleashed a few dusty beer farts at open mic night at some Minnesota coffee and head shop, your contribution to this forum was EXACTLY zero. And with each post, that number has dropped. Go use your Swedish penis pump to inflate your Sherrie Swafford blow up doll, turd brisket.

^ Same performance, but sounds 5x better than the original video. Very impressed by that falsetto note.

As the saying goes, you can't beat stupid and you most certainly don't fight crazy. My only wish is at the end of his performance, Perry had directed all his fans to gulp the cyanide-flavored kool-aid. At least then, music fandom would be rid of batshit window-licking nimrods like you. And hey, just imagine, you could all live happily together on Haley Bop comet with Perry croakily serenading you, as you soar past the rings of Jupiter.I'm sure you have all three minutes of Perry's "triumphant" solo "concert" blasting noisily in your bedroom as I type this. I don't get you, TNC.
Arnel restates what he's ALWAYS said regarding Steve Perry's possible return:
that he'd readily step aside, and you want him to 'hire a publicist or just STFU'?
Arnel loves his job and everything that it has made possible for him and his
family, but he's as big an SP fan as ANYONE on this board, and THAT'S why he'd
step aside for SP... is that clear enough for you?

Sure, Steve doesn't have his old range. To me, he sounded pretty bad in those
vid clips, but ffsakes he was BOUND to show major rust, and if only for the fact
that he seems to be enjoying a cathartic return to live performing, I say: more
power to the guy.

-----

Assuming Journey and Perry would want it to happen, their reunion as a band
would sell like crazy, but the key benefit in Steve's return, to a fan like me, is
that the band would HAVE to rework some songs that have been done perhaps
too many times in the same old Dirty way. If you're adamant in clinging to the
music as you remember it, you can't begrudge fans who also long to see the
band lineup as THEY remember it (or close enough).

JM2, man.
Definitely off it now...

Wow... this thread has gotten way too deep. It boils down to nothing more than Arnel being respectful. Frankly, it's no different than when Steve Augeri was asked the same question during his tenure and he said virtually the same thing.

SG made an excellent point here. Most of us here have stated as much ... we can and should tolerate lower key changes when it is sung by the man who created the song in the first place...different if by replacement singers out to duplicate the original version. Now, if SP had delivered a total mess, deeming the songs un-listenable, then it's right to criticize. But, he didn't, the DC performance was especially manificent ... that's why we are celebrating.
