I saw them on the Vacation's Over tour at the Tower Theater in October 1998. One of Augeri's earliest shows. The theater seats just a bit over 3,000. Couldn't tell you if they were sold out, but I remember the vibe of curiosity and skepticism. There was a sign hanging in the lobby saying that Steve Perry and Steve Smith would not be performing that night, and it was the first time that a few of the people there became aware. I remember hearing a few people saying "WHAT!?!?!?" when they read it.

I actually won tickets for the show. I wasn't planning on going. I remember seeing an ad for the show in one of our local newspapers, with their new promo picture. I showed my girlfriend, and she asked why Steve Perry got a perm. When I told her it was a different singer, who's name also just so happened to sound like Perry's, she said "yeah, no thanks."

Our classic rock station, 102.9, was giving away tickets. It was at 6 in the morning and 6th caller wins. I tried calling for the hell of it. Busy signal. Tried again, busy signal. About 5 minutes after that I decided to try one more time just for the hell of it and got through and won. It took almost 10 minutes to get 6 callers for the tickets.

With that said, it was an enjoyable show! There's a version on Youtube from Pittsburg from about the same week. Was it as exciting and electrifying as when we saw Perry there four years earlier? For me, not even close. But it was a good show and I look back at it being glad that we went.

The clip is online (link below). I really think Jon and Deeno were talking about the first year or so. It's deceptively edited to make it seem like it goes straight from Vacation's Over to the Def Leppard tour. Alot happened in between.

Yeah it jumped from Fall of ‘98 to 2006.

Strange to hear Cain talk about JSS never meant to be permanent considering they announced him as their new permanent singer :)

I went to Journey concert in 1998 at Palace of Auburn Hills. It holds 23,000 for concerts, and I don't know if it sold out, but there went many empty seats.

They had only one new song, Remember Me. So, they played a lot of material from Trial By Fire.
