I really hope Steve Perry comes out some day and slams all of these assholes that got wealthy
off of his brilliance!

Whatever his thoughts were on Perry, that was back then.................has nothing to do with the person SP is now.

Exactly. I am sorry Andrew did this interview. I'm sure the people who read this forum will get great enjoyment out of the tabloid fodder. However, the casual Journey fan who reads it will be disillusioned and confused as to how someone who became wealthy off this band and gave so much of himself to their success could think so little of them. HH gave Fan Asylum our start. We owe him big time. He was always really good to me as a fan and then an employee. However, I do not understand who he is now nor do I want to. Bitter, angry, negative, nasty. Why?

I love Journey. I love the music and my memories of my time with them. I lived it for many years, as a fan and as an employee. I could do a tell all interview too, and include things that I saw HH do back in the day that aren't very nice. But I would never do that. Why? Because it is no one's fucking business.

It doesn't matter to me who thinks Steve Perry was a prick in 1986. Or which band member's girlfriend got in a fight with who back in 1983. This kind of crap is well beneath the dignity of the brilliant man HH used to be. He's such an amazing story teller - I used to love to listen to his stories - it's too bad that all the wonderful things that happened to him and Journey for all those years has come down to this.

So, have a ball reading the interview. Have a great time tearing people apart that you don't know. Come up with new and creative names to call Steve Perry. See how many people you can hurt in the process. Knock yourselves out.

First of all, we don't even know what Herbie said in the interview yet. You know whose story I'd love to hear is yours! :) How you went from fan to employee, what working for Fanasylum was like when Journey was the only client, the fun times during the SPIN years and tour packages - no bad stuff, just what it was like for you, Lora, to be in the middle of everything during the heyday!

I'd have loved to have your job! :D

After sitting in an adjoining room for months on end, documenting the songs and making copies, being monitor engineer and idea backstop, I have a deep abiding appreciation for his abilities that cannot be shaken, despite being PO'd about what wasn't to be.
Those conflicting emotions are not self cancelling nor mutually exclusive. They are Emotions, and are by definition, beyond reason.

The relationships that were shared went through enourmous changes over time, and having spent a fair bit away from "the biz" has given me a much more philosophical point of view.

Put it like this, I MIGHT go into business with him ( good work ethic, proven earner) but I wouldn't go camping with him (falls off of trails). liable to chop his damn hand off. stick himself with a fishhook. have to go back to town. ruin the whole weekend. know what I mean?
Or iput another way.....
He would advance on Celebrity Apprentice but loose on Surviving Ted Nugent.  on second thought , he's liable to reach deep down and recall that farm boy stuff and kick some ass.
Steve's alright, no matter what I say about him. I hope he knows I would never do him wrong and never have I wished him ill, despite my angry outbursts. Anyone who knows me knows thats part of my "fun pak".

Wow. Just.....wow. I hope you are doing well....it sure sounds like you are in a good place. I think fondly of the times we hung out together. :)

i just cant imagine that all you swell folks either discovered each other or re-found one another again on these forums of andrews.. i have to say that im just honored to be one of those among.. its pretty cool..

Thanx Lar for saying that....totally agree....

Oh, OH OHHHHH, Jason Patterson, Neal's tech from '98 / '99 used to do a spot on impression of that . Used to just slay me. When I wasn't being an ass, I would banter back and forth with him, qutoeing that movie. We'ld pull up at a gig and he would do the one about the line up. can't remember it exactly, but I'm sure you know the one I mean. "Spinal TAp THEN...." only Jason would say "Journey" instead... had to be there.
BTW, little known factoid, HH absolutely hates that movies. Says it's too pesonal. Gotta admit, the first time i saw it, I sat there arms folded , all indignant at the mockery of my "profession" (yes , I'm aware I'm completely full of it) until Tufnel said something, I don't remember what, but I broke up laughing, practically fell out of my seat and couldn't get my breathe for about 20 mins. Had people looking at me and I was DYING ! So if he (HH) can't laugh at himself, well too fucking bad for him. Maybe he should try getting out of his head for real.

Not all who read it will believe everything HH says.
When I was a teen I liked Mr Herbert muchly.
Once I read the interviews my opinion changed.
I don't think he does himself any favors speaking negatively
about any of the band members.

Ah, the pre-interview hand wringing and whining is ratcheting up in loondom, preemptive objections over remarks HH MIGHT make tarnishing the halo just a bit more

The mere THOUGHT of someone remarking on Punxatawney steve's dirty laundry has Depends in a bunch all over their worlds both here and private, yet Open season was declared on the founder of the band, Schon's, personal 1ife in 2005 so what's good for the goose must be good for the gander.
And dare I say HH is more qualified to rip, being in the know, then all the "Neal's alimony" jokers online.

I know I'll have a fresh pot of bean on that morning. :)

I know what that's like!

He is, one of small list of people I know who will not BS you or allow any foolishness on their behalf.

Bring the "A Game" when dealing with him. He's on his.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Very much appreciated. I don't think anyone really thinks Steve Perry is some evil villian, but at the same time I think he made some wildly erroneous decisions while in Journey. Moreover, agreeing with what Herbie touched on, Steve couldn't mentally and/or physically continue and, being in too deep emotionally and attached, he couldn't watch something he helped make great go on without him. I really feel for him in that aspect. It must have been, and still be, hell. The guy gave his voice, his career and wore his heart on his sleeve for something he believed in. HOWEVER, his decision to "gag" these guys and become a faceless, behind the scenes road block that only speaks through lawyers has severed the relationship even more. Looking back, I'd bet that Perry regrets not making a clean split with the guys, handing Neal back his band completely and never looking back. Sadly, Steve still seems unable to completely let this thing go and I can't help but think Herbie is doing this as some sort of outlet for the only classic era member he ever loved, Neal Schon. In his mind, I think Herbie watched something he single handedly built from the ground up taken away by Steve Perry as his fame and perception as the band's most recognizable member grew. Herbie is never going to let this go, and I'm not sure he should. Watching the guy that you believed in when no one else did wrestle away control of something you built on blood, sweat and tears had to be tough. Being fired in a sort of chicken shit way by that same person couldn't have been too pleasant either. Watching his "son" Neal Schon battle a dream team of lawyers to wrestle back what he feels to be his also poured fuel on the fire. In Steve Perry's defense, maybe he thought what he was doing the right thing. MY memories of Steve Perry will always be fond. He's the vocalist to the soundtrack of my childhood. For that, I can't thank him enough. His era of Journey to me is the greatest in the history of music. These guys can battle legally, motherfuck each other and banter back and forth, but nothing can change, touch or tarnish the wonderful music they made. I wish there could be an amicable resolution to this whole ordeal. Sadly, I doubt that will ever happen as all parties seem too entrenched in their positions. Someone told me to treat this upcoming interview like an episode of Jerry Springer, meaning it will have a lot of colorful words but not a whole lot of substance. I'm taking that advice. I really doubt that Herbie will offer up anything more than the Castles Burning interview...he seemed to air it all out. What I am happy about is Andrew scoring a big, long overdue interview from the man that built Journey. I just hope we can all read the interview, take from it what we may and move on maturely...something I'm as guilty of not doing as the next guy. Let's get this over this with.

Fair point Red - but HH has let rip already - and surely even you would glaze over if he started complaining yet again about how Perry behaved in 1979?

None of this will move me to tears either. But if anyone comes out badly in this interview it won't be Perry....

Dan, I think you're just after a certain loon with your diatribe against SP. It's the negative attention approach. I think it's obvious that you've been after OSherrie for a long time and this is just a sick, twisted way to garner her attention. I've known you for a while now and know that you have a shyness problem when speaking to women, but this is going beyond that craziness. Just send her a PM and tell her how you feel. FUCK!!

yes :D or in the words of Mick Shrimpton...: "As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll."

Ah, but he ended up with the same fate as Stumpy Pete. He was a good, good drummer.

It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Interrupting him has all the appeal of stepping in front of a bus.

He is, one of small list of people I know who will not BS you or allow any foolishness on their behalf.

Bring the "A Game" when dealing with him. He's on his.

Though I don't know because I wasn't there for anything.
My perception on Herbie Herbert interviews is that he can throw the fetch stick far
and widely but hasn't been on the retrieving ride of it all.

I'm sure that the folks working together and touring for months on end felt friction towards each other.
I find it hard to hold fiber in the words of what went down simply because I wasn't a witness.
Gotta say I like to read about it though for entertainment and all.
