One thing I love about Savatage is the blatantly honest lyrics, mostly penned by Jon Oliva, Criss's brother and founding member of the band. Some of his lyrics are painful but they make for great, honest music.

BTW, here's a link to a great review of "Seeds of Change"...

He mentions in the liner notes that Dio had just begun singing for Black Sabbath at the time he was getting ready to record the album. He also says that Dio "was no Satanist". In fact, he says that he believed God blessed those recording sessions and even mentioned that Barriemore Barlow (Jethro Tull), who was not a Christian, said he felt God was using him on this album.

By the way, here is a link to the album on answers.com. There is a "buy now" link underneath the album cover art.

By the way, I was a huge Savatage fan in the 1980s...but I haven't heard any material recorded after Chris Olivia died. Is it any good? And is it true that Jon is just doing keyboards and backing vocals now?

Yeah, I love the post-Criss stuff. "Handful of Rain" is the first album recorded after that tragic event and Alex Skolnick (Testement) was the guitarist for that album and tour. "Dead Winter Dead" is my favorite Savatage album and was released a year later. Criss was a great and very underrated guitarist but, for the most part, the Savatage material after he died is my favorite Savatage era.

Thanks for the link Dave. I wonder what he thought of the "Holy Diver" album cover? :)

I'll check out "Dead Winter Dead" too - great to hear they overcame the tragedy.

I read they went even more 'operatic' during the 1990s? Is this true?

Yes, to some extent. They started doing some counterpoint vocals on "Dead Winter Dead", which lends itself well to more of an "operatic" feel, if that's even an appropriate word to use for their music. Zachary Stevens became the lead singer starting with the "Edge of Thorns" album in '93 and that allowed them to move from the straight ahead heavy rock/metal sound to more of a progressive metal sound. Jon Oliva's voice was great for the fist-pumping style metal that Savatage was known for in the 80s but Stevens is easily the better singer.

I was touring Japan with my KISS Tribute Band 'Dressed To Kill' in 1996 and one night we hit a small bar. There was a stage there and when we got up to jam the guys from Savatage walked into the bar (having played locally that night) and joined us onstage for some rock classics (Queen/Zep/KISS etc)... 8)

Great guys to share a beer or five with! :D

Hey Cetera - you were in a KISS tribute band? Is it still going? If so...are you doing any gigs in the UK soon? And which member are you?

Are you aware that the guys in Savatage are basically the same core group that does Trans-Siberian Orchestra?

Conversationpc, did you know that a radio personality from my area was instrumental in getting one of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's music pieces played frequently at Christmas???? :D :D

Cool...Would that be "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo)"? It's probably the most popular current piece of Christmas music on the radio over the last few years.

That would be the one! The members of the band usually call in or come into the studio around the holidays. Always interesting listening to how the music evolved.

Melody - Steve Perry (love the ROR-style production of the vocals - plus the Voice gets away with using a sax for the second time! How does he do it? :) )
