Just a different experience with the song.

If you focus on clips within the audio version, such as on a media player, you can hear Perry inhale and exhale quite profusely whenever he isn't singing so stating that he was not evidently fatigued is incorrect. He may not have looked as though he was fatigued, but, the audio disproves that.

His vocals on Mother Father are far superior to Deen no matter what. I still love Deen's performance b/c of what I stated up above just as much.

That is subjective, not fact. I would rather appreciate it if you would denote it as so.

Besides, I never did state that Deen's vocals were superior. As a prior discussion, on possibly another thread, stated, Deen lacks key vocal characteristics that Perry possessed. But, in my opinion, Deen's mannerisms as well as nailing the key points with some great notes set his fairly equal.

Yeah. Daniel's a lot more partial (biased) for Perry than I am. Trust me. Nothing gets played more than Escape, TBF, and the Live In Houston CDs on his iPod.

That's not true, although I do enjoy listening to all of the Perry-era records.

In fact, I've played more original Revelations tracks, Arrival tracks, and "Remember Me" recently than Perry-era.

Recently. That's because after being played 24/7, Perry (like all other singers) lose their luster, forcing you to give them a break.

This sort of absolute statement surprises me coming from you. But, as ever, you're entitled to your opinion. I think Deen does a better job. Deen's breath control, especially at his age, is just fucking ridiculous. Better than anything I've heard of Perry. But the great one had to deal with an obscene touring schedule and two hour sets per night.

Unfair to compare them without context. Under ideal circumstances, Perry would likely have destroyed him (in my book, anyways).

I know.

I don't mind Perry's heavy breathing. But like I said to your partner in crime, I love Deen's version just as much. As far as I'm concerned, and I've said this before, it should be a staple of the shows, like Faithfully is. It's that good of a performance not just by him, but by the whole band. To me, on the Revelation DVD it was my favorite performance. It's that good.

Well, let me restate that. My favorite songs of the DVD were Lights and Mother Father. Although, I could listen to Faithfully two times a week for the rest of my life and never tire of it.

Faithfully?

Christ, no. I could give you a thesis on why songs like "Faithfully" and "Open Arms" are overrated. Not because they suck, but because Journey has so many other ballads that just kick the utter dogshit out of them. I occasionally listen to Perry's studio version; Arnel's studio version has been listened to perhaps twice and the videos for the song in Vegas and Manila have been watched once as well.

It's not even in my top five favorite Journey songs. Don't ask me why, but I love to listen to it. Perry's is one of his best vocals as his voice was changing, a rich and soulful delivery, and Arnel's for the sheer power and crispness of his vocals, even though technically not as good or as polished in delivery.
You will say that doesn't make sense, that it must be in my top five then. But I don't always make sense anyway.

What was the weakest touch up to you?

Maybe WITS, only because it's more of a jam than a melodic flourish.
Really impressed with OA, Neal managed to superimpose a haunting melody onto an existing classic.

The "Open Arms" Neal solo was one of my favorite additions to the show, as well. It made a crappy song, already made less crappy by Arnel, decent.

True. But almost anything can be an improvement on the structure of OA.
I thought WITS was the strongest, myself. I'm leaving it open about AWYWI, since I haven't heard a particularly great quality one.

Neal's first solo starts at 3:37.

The jam session (which consists of a second, third, fourth, fifth... millionth solo) starts at around the 4:00 mark.

It's the riff from HSAS "My Home Town."
