Not even dirt, just a few facts about what happened in 1986 and beyond? Has the gag order expired or anything? I'm sure it would still be a good book even if he skirted certain things but a lot of us would still be wondering. Most people in the world don't care what happened, but we in Journeyworld do, I think. Would he even be able to mention Steve at all? (I wish I could hang around for your answer if you decide to answer but I have to go to work...)

And has he found a publisher for the book? If so, I'd be very curious to know who signed it up.

Sure. He's King of the Tribute Singers. I'll give him that....

As much as I liked Perry before he took over the band and lost range?

The range is plenty high enough on ROR and Perry's voice grew in stature, maturity and soul as the years went by.

I have never thought of him in the godly way many do. A great one indeed but I never thought he was the best ever. JMO. To me that's getting carried away.

:D I guess I have maybe got a little bit carried away at times....

Yeah Maybe. Tribute singers? Has he done some tribute I don't know about?

Deano, is the following not applicable anymore or was it ever true?

I'm not Deano, but I say it's not totally true. NO ONE can stop you from writing your own autobigraphy. They can legally stop you from mentioning their name, but that's it.

saint John wrote:The notion of removing Perry from the band at any point is ridiculous. Like it or not, if you want stadium tours and megabucks, he's the only member that counts. Remember, promoters were ONLY interested in a Perry-fronted Journey. Without him, it's medium sized venues, Def Leppard's coattails and several thousand stinky Euros. Hindsight is 20/20, but as it relates to the risk-reward relationship, Perry will ALWAYS be welcomed back at ANY time. Journey will be a top grossing act IF he ever decides to return. That incarnation of Journey is simply too deeply embedded in so many people's hearts, minds and memories. And if he does decide to come back I'll be fucking bankrupt. Although his career was relatively short compared to some artists, it doesn't change the fact that STEVE PERRY IS THE GREATEST VOCALIST OF ALL-TIME. In his prime, no one comes close......no one.

AMEN AND HALLELUJAH! It would be the most sought after ticket on the planet......and I too would pay ANY price to see a Perry fronted Journey again. Any price.

A gag order is written in a customized way. It can include language written to specifically prohibit certain words being said or written, by certain people in certain forms of distribution, including, but not limited to, books, video press and print press.
Not to give away Neal's release, but Herbie is NOT bound by confidentiality, but the others most certainly were. To my knowledge, they could indeed comment about the others, but not in any negative way whatsoever.

Is it still in effect? I do not know, but I would assume so. Why would the order only be placed into effect for X amount of years? I would think it is in effect for each of the individual's life span.

Unless you heard it from SP himself, you really CAN'T know what his intentions were.

And I have no doubt that you have heard many things straight from some of the horse's mouths - but I can't help think that unless you're hearing directly from ALL of the horses, you (or anyone) can't possibly know the whole and undiluted truth about any of these stories. Especially when so many wounded, angry egos are involved. jmho

Well, give this a debate. In the Castles Burning interview, HH said that SP said he wasn't touring anymore, start liquidating. Even in the Escape tour, SP's voice showed some road ware. SP knew it, and had saved his pennies and thought, screw this, I've got a fortune here, I don't need to do any more touring and destroy my voice which I will need down the road. The band members and tour organizer (can't remember his name) talk him into it. SP tours in 82, not much though. They do Frontiers and tour that and SP's voice is showing more road ware. Nothing until 86. RV files for bankruptcy, JC narrowly avoids bankruptcy. SP steps in, records and tours ROR. My thinking is, he's PISSED that he's destroying his voice for everyone else's financial benefit. He became reclusive and didn't associate or even speak to the band. He felt like he was being used up for everyone else's benefit. Hell that would make anyone want to act like an ass. I've thought this since I read that Castles Burning interview. SP wasn't as much of a jerk as he was a pretty damn nice guy for sacrificing his voice for everyone else's solvency. The facts show that SP is a pretty freakin' smart business guy. How else would he have written such hard nosed contracts as to the use of his material, and the gag orders too. He knew he was acting like a dick, but who wouldn't have? He had the weight of that band riding on his voice, which was cracking pretty damn steadily.

I could be totally off base, but that's the feeling I get when I hear that SP was acting like a prick.

Great post. While everyone thought that the band could just do what they did forever, no one ever checked to see if that is what each member WANTED to do. Perry seemed to have some social issues and I think alcohol seemingly "helped" him through some of that. However, in the end, he realized he couldn't do that forever. Friga has the most poetic quote as it pertains to Perry. Something like, "Steve Perry bled a liitle bit each time he sang." Cain knew that Perry gave EVERYTHING he had when he performed. When he wasn't able to do that anymore, he simply walked away. I never thought that maybe he came back for the OTHERS, not himself (several times or maybe at least once). Great point to ponder. Perry has no one to aplogize to because he was the only member who was smart enough to set himself up for life.

Dean, you didn't do anything--you're just getting picked on. You know, I hate to be Debbie Downer, but really what has Les contributed to the conversation? The only time he seems to post is to say something like, Herbie is the man, love that guy, he gets me great tickets... Sorry Les, but it just seems kind of silly to me. This is a really interesting and thoughtful thread; I've enjoyed reading through it... A lot of the people who post have strong feelings about Journey and have given some thought to what they want to say, right? God knows there have been plenty of battles and hurt feelings...

Okay, fire away--and I predict Les will come in here with a "Herbie is the man, gotta love that guy!!" :)

Herbie is a typical Berkeley hippie. A few good ideas and a whole lot of name-calling, finger pointing and self-adulation. He likes to take credit for finding Perry but ALWAYS stops short of giving him any praise. The man went out there night after night, tour after tour and belted out the hardest catalog in music. NO singer could have done it at the level he did. This will serve as a reminder...look closely, and remember it was all LIVE.

September 1981. Steve Perry and Journey played 24 shows in 30 days. Herbie threw Perry out there like the Energizer Bunny because McDonalds introduced 2 Big Macs for $2. That dude has a lot of nerve talking shit about Perry. And judging by his physique he never put in a hard day of labor in his life. Since Perry is too classy to blast back, I'll do it for him. I've never been big on class anyway.

Herbie gave us (Fan Asylum) our start. I will forever be grateful to him for that. He gave me the chance to work for my favorite band. He always treated me well and I enjoyed his company, his storytelling and his passion for the music. That does not mean that everything he says is gospel. I am sorry that his memories of his time with Journey don't seem to be happy ones. Mine sure are. Herbie is human like everyone else with the same human frailties. I don't agree with or understand everything he says but he would still get a big hug from me if I ran into him on the street.

That's because, unlike him, you're seemingly a kind, positive person who I assume isn't filled with bitterness. Remember, that was upstart Herbie. Not the same guy who stole from the band, blasted Perry and just about every other member (except Rolie) and can't let go of the fact that Steve got what HE wanted. Majority say-so in the band. The "reigns" if you will. THAT'S what it's all about. The pupil outfoxed the teacher.

Didn't SP say something like that he & HH were similar in some ways? They both seem very bright, know the business & both are visionaries - they could predict the future & knew what would become "timeless". HH does deserve credit for what he did in getting this band together (his best decision was bringing SP in, of course, IMO) & for all the technical things he introduced that paved the way for later bands. I wasn't thrilled to read what he has said about SP, but sometimes people are brash on the outside & different in private - who knows? SP thanked him at the WOF & that was class (of course, that was before the HH interviews, but I bet SP would still feel the same way - he has a lot of appreciation.) :)

saint John wrote:Herbie is a typical Berkeley hippie. This will serve as a reminder...look closely, and remember it was all LIVE
Thanks for posting this. that is fucking amazing how many gigs Journey played. That was suicide for a lead singer.I wish you would have posted the ROR tour also.Im sure it was one fourth the gigs. I cant understand why anyone in there right mind would have booked a band this much This shit started again when Augeri came on board with the same result. Hopefully Jeff has the balls to say enough is enough, and he wont be another fried lead singer on the Journey heap. We will see.
