It has to do with the fact that I have spent many years perfecting the art of caring for my patients and in a universal health care system the government comes in and takes control. Suddenly, politicians dictate when a patient can see a doctor and when they can see a specialist, how many visits can be made to a doctor in a given timeframe, how much money can be spent on a certain disease process and it will never be enough. Waiting periods will be placed on patients that need to be seen. The quality healthcare that we are used to will be a thing of the past.

Micheal Moore's new movie "Sicko" looks to be enlightening on the healthcare issue. I had an upsetting thing happen today, mind you I have health insurance- Blue Cross. I was told that the referral to a specific hospital would not be made because they don't "refer to that hospital." One of the boys will need life saving surgery, but they don't refer to that hospital, whatever the fuck that means . The system as it is does not work for the majority. To know ahead of time what will be needed to save a life and choose another route is absurd. Maybe I'm missing something here, but as it is the system needs an overhaul.

Absolutely 100% agreed, however, universal health care is not necessarily the answer. Look at the closest thing we have to a current "universal health care system"~Medicare. Without going into a big long explanation, I will just tell you that health care organizations nearly always lose money on Medicare patients or maybe just break even. This is also true for Medicaid patients since Medicaid only pays 66% of a total bill and the facility is not allowed to bill the patient for the remainder. The facilities make the majority of their money from insured patients (hence high health care costs.) Therefore, hospitals provide excellent care to all patients (or they should) and hope that all the costs even out and they make money. Yes, hospitals are a business and are in it to make money. Now consider that there are no "insured" patients to "pick up the slack" and they only break even. They will start only providing the very bare minimum care to all patients to cut costs wherever they can. It may seem like nothing but it truly is something. Most surgeries will become day surgeries, patients will be discharged the same day they have babies or maybe the next day, nurses will be forced to take care of more patients. So while the health care system may need some improvements, universal health care would not be an improvement.

As healthcare professionals, I don't understand why many seemed so threatened at the possibility of healthcare being provided to those who need it - not just those who can afford it.

I am sick and sick and tired of having to drag my oxygen to work everyday because even tho I work and do have insurance the co-pays are so high I cannot afford much of the medicine I need. The time will come that I need a full heart/lung transplant and I will not be able to come up with my share of the money for the procedure or the aftercare.

I am not a bad person - I have always been a good person - and I have to deal with health care professionals everyday.

On many days it seems they are just trying to kill me. And before anyone gets insulted at that, imagine how insulted I feel when I am told that my oxygen cannot be delivered for 2 days.

Right now I am pissed at anything in this country that even vaguely calls itself "healthcare".

Health care really needs to be two separate words because from my point of view it is an oxymoron.
