It was so fried that the PC was trying to boot up on its network card! I did previously get stuff rescued from a laptop damaged by a lightning strike, but no luck this time.
I did have a lot of stuff backed up (and yes, I do use an external hard drive as a back up these days) but I can't track down which one of hundreds of back-up CDs accumulated over the years has these little treasures on it! Something must have gone awry with my labelling system! I'd blame my assistant ... if I had one.

Don't try to boot from that damaged hard drive. Get ur friend to hook it up as an external drive AFTER u get set up w/a new drive to boot from (I assume u already have one). That's what the hubby does for me. In fact, I can right now read from the last drive I fucked up but I'm booting from an entirely separate pc.
That's what we did - replaced the hard drive and then tried to read the "dead" one as an external drive. Tried on more than one machine. Nothing. I wasn't too concerned because I do have a lot of things backed up. It's just
a. Finding them, and
b. Those few items which I hadn't got around to backing up yet,
which, regrettably, would include these songs. I shall go and kick myself some more now. Must back up on a regular schedule ....
