Don't blame you at all. I'm the same way when I see posts like mine. And I never would have thought about posting on this but for Kevin writing that I could do so. And though I don't need affirmation for my ego, I e-mailed Andrew and asked that he confirm with Kev. Moreover, I asked Kev to post to his diary when he gets a chance.

I take that to mean it's probably both. New stuff as well as this other project of fucking up the hits. I mean... re-recording the hits. Note the re-recording issue wasn't addressed specifically. But of course as Andrew said, details are still being hammered out witht he big bad W corp. so no suprise that there's no specific mention to it.

News of new material is certainly news to me and Kev won't reply to my messages.

But as I am aware the first step will still be a release of re-recordings.

The source is genuine and 100% confirmed. Caught me by surprise - both the news and the fact Kev gave an ok to post. Following up with other sources now.

The band has been holding out and planned a press release, but some issues are being forced with these leaks.

Could it be a situation where they planned to trash the hits, and then Kevin read posts here, as do Neal and Jon and realized they better change course? Maybe this little community did make a difference (again).

Fire Azoff and hire our collective group. :) We won't make any money if it's tied to future profits, but at least they might listen.

Does that make me less a fan of their music? I have the cd's from the Perry era.

That's the part I can't understand? I don't think I've gone to a concert that I didn't know who was going to be singing. :? Mind you, vocals are a huge part of my musical enjoyment. Say for instance, I saw that April Wine was coming to town, I would definately google them to make sure it was still Myles Goodwin singing.....before I decided to go. With ticket prices at $100 to $200 a pop, I'd be some pissed if I went to a Bon Jovi concert and it wasn't JBJ fronting. But then that's something I'd know ahead of time. Am I weird that way?

Yeah, I know Deb. I KNEW Augeri was supposed to sing when I bought the ticket. I just didn't know WHO he was and that Journey was still together. There were actually people at the concert in Orlando that didnt' know though. Or had no idea why Perry wasn't with them. I always know who will be there for a concert too.

Lynn,

Do you remember when we were in Clearwater at the Applebee's, there was a commercial that came on the radio advertising the Journey concert for that very evening? The music that was being played in the background was the Steve Perry era music, featuring Steve Perry. I would think that certainly that would have something to do with why people might be confused. The next night, in Pompano Beach, I was listening to one woman telling another in the bathroom that JSS was singing because Steve Perry had throat cancer and couldn't perform. I had to explain to her the changes that had occurred in the band since '98.

I wonder... did Van Halen use DLR vocals to advertise a VH concert after Sammy Hagar joined the band? Does anyone remember? I can't imagine them doing that. :?

That throat cancer rumor made it's way to the HOB here in Orlando too, Lynn & I were standing in line & a woman behind us says "I wonder if they're going to do a tribute to Steve Perry, since he died of throat cancer". lol

Yes, I remember that! We had the same thing happen at the Orlando House of Blues. A woman in line for drinks said she wondered if Journey would dedicate a song to Steve Perry since he has throat cancer and all. I guess because there was no studio music released with JSS they had no choice but to play all Journey/Perry music.

Looks like I owe you an apology. Glad to hear your information was real. If the band were merely re-recording their hits that would have been total crapola. At least they're doing some new music.

Have to say, that you tube clip of Arnel doing Separate Ways doesn't do it for me in the slightest. I hope he sounds better on the other songs and more importantly, on the originals.

No need for an apology, but thanks. I would have had my doubts as well. All I can say is that Kev seems genuinely impressed and enthused about the project. He has a lot of strong, honest opinions, and I really trust him on his assessment of the latest lineup. He was blown away by Arnel and the songs. Though I hate everything that's transpired with both Steves, and Jeff, I am extremely curious to hear the new material. And after hearing one of Kev's latest projects (Joe Bonamassa's Sloe Gin), which I think is one of the records of the year, I can't wait to hear what he's done with Journey. Red13 and Generations had no direction and were truly "lost," and it seems that they were headed in that direction with the new material. I'm glad Kev's on board to help direct them. But we'll all be the judges next summer.

Part of the 10 mile long contract the band signed with Perry was that Journey cannot re-record ANY of the Perry-era material and offer it for sale. The only exception was the Arrival DVD (Vegas) in which Perry waived the contract for that one performance.

In short, you will not be seeing any re-recorded material being released unless of course Perry signs off on it.....yea right :)

Thanks for sharing your email with us Tom.

This is a relief... I'm very much looking forward to hearing the new material, and the rerecorded hits will be a curiosity if nothing else. Maybe with the new tracks they will kick us in the pants! It will be long overdue.

Lets hope this never gets done...new material fine, but leave the classics alone! They cannot be improved on and Arnel will never replace SP.

I didn't think about that covering LIVE recordings! Wow, would that be tough for the band... I would think it wouldn't hold up in court. But yes, it's now been mentioned by Andrew that word is it was only a 9-year contract:

("Why now and why was the idea with JSS scuttled? Talk is that Mr. Perry had a 9 year deal where he had a say in what the band could do with the classic material and that has only just now expired, hence the band can now do what they like....and this is what they like!")

Tom,
Thanks for the email.
A quick reply from my phone - forgive the brevity.
Feel free to post this if you wish.
Neal and Jon called me and asked me in November to check out a couple of new songs, for an upcoming and possible project with Journey.
I went to San Francisco to assess the new Journey and check out the material. I am so swamped, have a new baby and I did not want to be involved if it wasn't focused and great. I thought I'd be there for 2 days. First, I was stunned at Arnel, who is a monster vocalist. He is the real deal. Just phenomenal. Its true they found him on YouTube. Next I heard the songs. I am always in awe of Jonathan Cain as songwriter/producer and together with Neal, who adds the rock element, they are one of the great songwriting partnerships. Its true they don't always see eye to eye musically, but the combination is magic. We spent a while talking and seeing where they were at. I have been brutally honest with them, and was not interested in being any part of them being a nostalgia/tribute band, which could happen if their focus got lost, which it has been. Some of the songs were lacking direction which I, as an outspoken and brutal outsider, immediately pointed out and set about repairing. So I cut a couple of tracks - and have been school teacher/policeman-producer with them, and with all the shit out of the way, you have to hear them ignore their egos and me, and just play as Journey. All together in the studio. What a privilege to see all 5 of them playing together. They are fantastic. I am always cogniscent of the space Perry and Smith occupy in the sound and legacy, and won't let that be underplayed, and Deen and Arnel are brilliant musicians, and with a little focus the entire band has found their place again. This is stronger than Trial By Fire and sounds like Journey, but state-of-the-art. People always talk up upcoming material, but just wait. Its unbelievable. There's a full album of new material coming, but much more, too. Don't believe all you read - there is no one else but the band in the studio to hear the music (although we do have a Make-A-Wish kid coming in soon).
And that's the dirt from Las Vegas, where I am mixing seven new original songs. I head back to San Francisco after a quick visit to London, to see the Led Zep reunion, to finish off where we began. I can't wait, and you are going to love it!
Merry Xmas,
KS

That's awesome news. I can't wait to buy their new album and go to their concert. I'm all for new, original music as I've stated before and definitely NOT interested in re-recorded old Journey material. Let's move on and get some new tunes. I don't know why everyone here disses them so much over personnel changes. It's not like it never happened before. I'm sure there are still a ton of fans out there interested in Journey putting out new music. Too bad there are so few of them posting on this board. It's a minefield over here for Journey supporters.
