I'm a bit bummed that Junior was the highest-placing Hendrick guy and that Stewart got nicked at the end, but all in all it was an interesting start to the season.

I'm going to say that Jimmie Johnson wins next week for sure, Kyle Busch will take the pole.

I will take either one of the Busch boys next week, with JJ top 5, BUT I will take JJ to win Vegas for sure. He owns that place.

If JJ doesn't own at least one race by the time Bristol gets here, there's something wrong with him. JJ's an animal.

I'm gonna put a couple names out there that could be Atlanta upsets.

Dave Blaney and Bobby Labonte.

Labonte may have some crappy equipment but the guy is always solid at Atlanta. He's overdue for a win and the new shop/new attitude at Petty's garage could give him the push he needs to visit Victory Lane again.

Dave Blaney can drive the wheels off of any car at any track, but has horrible luck. With Toyota's sudden success, there's no way Blaney won't either win or rack up multiple top 5's this year.

I was watching 3 the other night, and while I hate that movie (b/c of THREEsa's bias on Dale's story), watching it made me really miss the Nascar that I fell in love with as a child. And at the same time, pissed me off at the way the sport is today. How many Nascar fans actually remember and know the importance of Hickory, Lonsome Pine, Concord, Pineville, and Dublin?? I miss that. I miss when all the cars were nothing like the other. Back when the only media whore was Darryl Waltrip. IMO, things really started to shift after Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison passed away.

Piss and moan session over. Carry on.

I may have only been a youngster in every sense of the word, but I remember those days clearly and miss them severely.

It was a rough couple years there for a kid who grew up with Kulwicki, Allison, and Irvan as his three favorite drivers!

Not a month goes by where I don't break out some of my dad's old race tapes from the early 90's and late 80's and watch some classic events. Nothing like watching Earnhardt, Waltrip, Elliott, Rudd, Wallace, Irvan, Gant, Jarrett, and Kyle Petty duke it out!

Hell yes!! Dude, when Cow Pattie raced the Mello Yello car, Awesome Bill was in the Bud #9, Rudd in the Tide, Irvan in the Kodak car, oh hell fucking yes! Those are the days I'm talking about. The pre-Jeff Gordon days!! (Not knocking on Jeff, Deano... :P ) But that WAS real Nascar! You still had the piss and vinegar of the dirt track shine runner boys, and you were starting to get the big time fame taste creeping every so slowly into the world.

That was back when Bristol wasn't a "fishbowl" as fucking Cryan Newman puts it. It was concrete bleachers on the frontstretch, metal stands along the back, and a few stands in turn 3.

Hahah yeah! Those were the days. I could ask my dad who the top 5 was in a race, and he could tell me "Morgan Shepherd, Brett Bodine, Geoff Bodine, Derrike Cope, and Dick Trickle" without me blinking and asking him if he was high!

There wasn't 43 cars in every race, but there didn't need to be. Nearly every driver had a personality and weren't afraid to put their car on the line to nab a victory. North Wilkesboro and Rockingham still had races, Darlington had two dates, and there weren't newfangled cookie cutters plaguing the sport.

The 1992 Hooter's 500 signalled the beginning of the new era. Richard Petty retires, Jeff Gordon makes the jump. Over the next few years several greats would either retire, pass on, or get severely injured... and more and more boring drivers would come up through the ranks.

Thank goodness for guys like Tony Stewart, keeping a bit of "fire" alive in NASCAR today.

I was there!!! The luxury suites sucked ass back then, but I remember chicken wings, and my Daddy telling me to remember this day forever, it was the last time we'd see the King race.

Morgan Shepherd was my Daddy's neighbor when he lived in Conover. Dude has one of the nicest kept lawns you'll ever see, and he keeps it up himself. That says a lot.

Tony's a very good guy. Me and one of my best friends from high school were down in the infield at Charlotte May of '05 for the Quaker Steak & Lube CTS race and she had wayyy too much to drink. We were hanging out at Kasey's motorcoach downing Coors Light and she (btw, her fiance works for Junior) was all of a sudden bad sick... I mean BAD. (We ate up in the Speedway Club earlier, so I'm blaming them.) Tony lets us use his golf cart so I can take her back to Anthony (her fiance) so he could take her home. Awesome guy. Don't like his new hair though. He looks like a tard.

Shepherd's one of the nicest and coolest drivers, he was always a favorite of mine. Wish he'd come up and work on my lawn, it needs some work and I'm one lazy man.

Man I envy you, getting to live down in the thick of NASCAR country.... AND getting to see that amazing race! I haven't had the fortune of making it to a Cup race yet, just one truck event and one then-Busch event.

Glad to hear another good story about Tony, I've heard plenty! I, however, dig the new hair. It makes him look just like my dad. :D

Eh... Mecklenburg/Iredell/Cabarrus... it's nice. But there are two other places I'd rather be. I've been in and out of this area for 15 years. SSDD. I went to my first Cup race in March of '87. I haven't sat in the grandstands (save for a few races) since 1992. It's nice. I'm burned out on it though, mostly because of why I was griping.

Tony looks like your Dad? Jeesh... you are a cradlebopper, huh? :P

I was there for the spring race in '92, and both races the next year. I had tickets for that race if I wanted them, but couldn't get away. For the best race in the history of the sport! :( The King leaving, Gordon's first race, and Kulwicki outsmarting Junior Johnson and his crew by leading one more lap than Elliott, thereby winning the Winston Cup Championship by 5 points! Back when there was no dogleg, and the backstretch was the front. What luxury suites? There wasn't even an East Turn Grandstand yet!
I saw Shepherd win there for the Wood Bros. And I KNEW Dick Trickle. And his whole family. I grew up watching him race in Wisconsin. THERE was one crazy dude! And one of the last true racers. As for Tony, I've seen his act in person too many times, including a personal confrontation. Could have more talent than anyone else, but is a spoiled brat. You can have him.
I know California sucks, but I'll be in the garage Friday morning! I'm stoked!

You are all on crack.

Morgan Shepard doesn't even drive anymore. He needs to stop praying and start driving.

Tony Stewart is an asshole. Remember, that isn't only my opinion, but the Home Depot almost canned him.

Hey, Shepard does too drive. Maybe four laps a year, but he does. :D He's a graduate of the Norm Benning school of start-and-park.

I guarantee that if you put Shepard in a Hendrick car, he'd outdo Junior. ;)

I can't imagine Stewart out of a Home Depot car. Other than Gordo with the #24 Dupont, isn't Stewart in the #20 Home Depot car the longest-standing driver/number/sponsor combo in the sport right now?

Stewart is definitely an asshole. I'll give him his due, he does TONS of great things for charity, but he's an asshole none-the-less. I have seen him in person be one on many occasions. And I actually used to like him.

Deano slamming Gordo

Postby frfksakes » Wed Feb 20, 2008 7:52 am

Well, that’s gratitude for ya, Deano. :P
JJ is driving JG’s car, was and is schooled by JG on the ways of the tracks (to his credit, even JJ admitted this often last year)- was given the best of the best right away because of JG - was introduced to his wife by JG, and, I think most importantly, got CK from JG’s own crew. Talk about insider information!

And I say most importantly, because JJ would not be winning so much without CK - who is not only incredibly smart in the ways of racing, but who can cheat under-the-wire better than anyone else in the business. Or, you could say, "knows how to work the system" better than anyone… I wish JG had someone so smart on his team, lol.

JJ would not be where he is this fast without JG, Hendrick, and especially CK. And that’s not taking away from JJ’s driving - he IS gifted. Few drivers have the talent he has to take all of these advantages to such great heights.

& JJ DOES have something that JG has yet to get back, that hunger to win no matter what (including screwing over JG, lol).

Also, I think JR will surprise you. I think he’ll do VERY well this year. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Hendrick ended 1,2 & 3.

And Tony Stewart is his own worse enemy and should be a walking cautionary tale for all young men. He may just be the best driver out there, right now. Just phenomenal.
But his irrational anger, and his constant ‘I was screwed over, and you are all idiots’ attitude is getting in his way (though highly entertaining, and often true, lol). (And I can't stand Kurt, so no foul there, lol)
I LOVE to watch him drive, though. Esp. on road courses. (also love watching Kyle and Denny! What a stable of drivers! - All angry exceptional drivers.)

& I agree with getting rid of the boring races. More driver-oriented tracks, please!!

Uh, thanks for the history lesson of which I already know all about.

Have you noticed whenever either JJ or JG get wrecked or blow up, the vast differences between the two? Gordon is always whining, complaining and pointing the finger at somebody else. JJ meanwhile chalks it up to racing and we'll be back next week, and they usually always bounce back.

JG gave JJ his ride sure, but, JG knew this guy would make him a ton of money. You see all the nascar commercials lately? JJ is the focal point in all of them. He would be the face of Nascar if there wasn't that dumb hick Earnhardt in there gravy training off his old man's name. I am sorry, but Jr sucks. Takes stupid chances, overdrives is car, abuses his equipment, and frankly isn't too bright. Take last week. Can someone please tell me he stayed out with 37 to go and NOT get tires? Hell, he was inhaled in 3 laps. I am not worried about Knaus giving inside info to Eury. Hell he can share it, as they are supposed to as they are teammates, but Eury and Jr sure as Hell won't understand Knaus is trying to tell them.

Lol, You’re welcome! & more just a defensive rant/reminder. I have no doubt you know plenty about all of this.

Come on, that’s old shit. JG has been great over the last few years, and he’s been JJ’s biggest cheerleader.

Rockindeano wrote: JG gave JJ his ride sure, but, JG knew this guy would make him a ton of money. You see all the nascar commercials lately? JJ is the focal point in all of them.

Well, DUH! He won the Championship. I would hope he’d be the focal point in most of the commercials.
Have you noticed that in the quick Nascar commercials that it’s the 24 car that’s the most prominent?? But even I know it’s just because it is the most recognizable car.

If you listen to the reporting, though, I think it is JJ who is the most popular among the Nascar media, and the sports media in general, Maybe because they relate to him more than countryboy or Gordo, who knows. Whatever the reason, it should serve him very well. (& Hosting golf tournaments with tabloid darling Nick whatshisname won’t hurt, lol)

Totally agree.

And I think you can add Letarte to that group as well. He’s good, but he’s no mental match for Knaus.

And all this adds up to another championship for the Lowe's 48 Chevy.

Agree?

By the way, the most recognizable car in Nascar to me anyways, is the 48, 20, 24..the new 88 is just that. The casual viewer might not know about it. I really think the Lowe's car is more popular than the Rainbow DuPont.

Morgan Shepard doesn't even drive anymore. He needs to stop praying and start driving.

Tony Stewart is an asshole. Remember, that isn't only my opinion, but the Home Depot almost canned him.

We agree on Tony Stewart, that is for sure....I didn't hear that he was almost canned by Home Depot, though.

Yes, when he hit that reporter in Bristol. They sent him to anger management classes. But he's all better now. Unless, by chance, he doesn't win four out of six races, like he did that time they were sure he turned over a new leaf. Then he lost a couple of races in a row. And all bets were off.

The favorite two cars of gay men everywhere. Johnson and Gordon are the pretty poster boys of "racing."
