Hi there styxie. Just remember the same thing happened when JSS joined. It was just as bad then.

Journey was going to re-record the hits when Jeff was part of the band, I still didn't agree with it. As much as I am a full fledge support of Jeff, I just feel classic hits should be left alone.

They would be crazy to turn down the offer at this stage in their lives. It's a no brainer. They don't have as many avenues of income anymore. Records don't sell, there's not much radio play, so it's offers like redoing the GH, and touring. That's about it.

Yeah, but where does it stop? How low do you go for a buck?

Very, very valid point(s). However, there is a huge contingent that have never heard these songs before in Asia...mainly in the Phillipines and surrounding countries. These discs will sell like hot cakes, making this incarnation money and the classic lineup money as well. This is a winner across the board. And believe me, I asked many Filipinos this question and most said that they hadn't heard a lot of the songs played. Most knew only 2 or 3 songs. I suspect the worldwide sales for this package will be fairly huge.

The fact that they have to sell to a whole different market to make a buck should signal a warning bell, shouldn't it? :?

No. Sales are sales are sales. Should they also start rapping on their albums because "hip hop" dominates the airwaves. Journey made a tremendously bold and risky decision and I have a feeling their reward is going to be HUGE in terms of money. And that's what corporations are supposed to do...make money.

M&G's were flying around here like crazy.

I've always maintained Jeff was too good for Journey....he was one of us and Management didn't fuckin' like it. (their loss) What saddens me with Jeff is he hasn't made that jump into greatness yet as his solo material is truly magnificent. He has Perry's drive and just needs to have the team behind him to make it happen, not a bunch of fuckin' execs who just see a chance to make quick money by employing a quick fix guy who brings half the fuckin audience to Vegas...nodding their fuckin' heads to western music with St John cock up their arse.
Anyone ever listen to the potential in Jeff's music would realise this guy is gonna be the next big thing, with Journey he would have sailed along for 5 years or so and broke out again. The dude's tunes sound like Asia and Survivor mixed, Arnel (the nice new kid) hasn't got the edge Jeff has.

Well, you tell me. I would be willing to bet that they wouldn't be doing it if they didn't absolutely need to. It's pretty widely known that they've gone through some really rough times financially. So I guess they do it until it's not doable anymore. What else have they got? SSI? Why begrudge someone trying to make an honest living? And it is an honest one now.

Well, if "sales are sales are sales" then yes. What's the difference if they rap, impose the price of a crap "free" album to you at the gate, or dig deeper in the mud for a buck? Why shouldn't they rap, because that's not Journey? Journey didn't used to use tapes and the forementioned things either.
Ever hear the AC/DC song, "What Do You Do For Money"?
There's a breaking point with everything SJ.

Who's fault are their personal or business of finances? Theirs.
I'm not begrudging them. They're free to run the Journey name into the ground. If you're okay with that fine. Some aren't.
I gave my brother a Journey update. He was a huge fan from Infinity - ROR, and a reason I became a fan.
He was pretty disgusted and asked why they don't hang it up. Just sad, like watching Ali fighting over the hill and out of shape. Used to be great. :?

Well, if it's just about the money, then they should definitely rap on their next album if that's what it takes to make serious money. And if what you're saying has any valid points, it means Journey is more or less a corporation and no longer a band in it for the music. Which to me, is a very sad state of a band. The band has become a corporation and not a rock band.

Just curious if you have the Arrival DVD? Woudn't that basically be considered re-recording the hits + 2?

Yes I do have the dvd and the audio that someone made for me. I do not consider that to be the same thing as they were trying to continue the band with a new singer and preview songs from arrival.Or so they tried to show and tell us. They did not blatantly go rerecord the hit songs to make money. Had they done a rerecording in 01 I would have gladly bought the cd or dvd. My question is why not? If they cared what the fans thought and wanted we would have had that and the 2 dvcds they promised us. That is my issue. If SA was truely eual to them and a part of things we would have had these things. People were asking for years. Now that they fired him and trashed him and blamed him for things they give us the cd of classics with a new singer they got from youtube?!? Whatever, it is actually comical.
The fact that it appears that they thought of SA only as a hired singer and did not take the time to take his songwriting and contributions seriously and respectfully and then hurried through a cd because they saw him writing for a solo cd and
to get back on the road to play 70's songs, Hendrix covers and the DD to make money is what bothers me.
Now all of a sudden they take a year off to record a new cd and redo songs etc??? It is like a slap in the face to Augeri and those that support him. That and the lies about the 06 tour and the "comments" in the jc and ns interviews last year,
have turned me off and away from them.

we all have and have been through finacial issues. The economy of this country sucks. i fthey want to run the journey name into the ground to make money that is up to them. I am not going to spend the money I need for my future on something I do not agree with or support. some of us are not okay with what their choices have been.
I am disgusted too. when people ask me now I tell them to go onto their website, as I refuse to get involved in passing the word about them and their decisions. If they need the money that is their business, I do not have to spend mine to support them,

They're a band looking to make money. I don't see the problem here. Everyone said there would "no new music." There is. Everyone said they wanted a DVD. There is. They have a singer that can sing circles around the last 2 singers and will give them bigger worldwide exposure and keep the core U.S. fans happy. This is hands down the best state the band has been in since 1987.

PS And for the retard that said "Jeff is too good for Journey" I would encourage you to write management a letter and openly thank them for releasing him then. What a ridiculous statement.

I think you're drinking the kool-aid a little too much, but whatever makes you happy dude. I certainly hope Journey proves me wrong, but Journey's had almost a decade to be commercially successful since Perry left and it hasn't happened. AND IF Journey is all about making money, then to not be a commercial success means failure. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Journey with Steve Augeri, and supported JSS 100%. But, after the boneheaded move to fire JSS from the band, I realized it truly was all about the money. It is not all about the music. If you're fine with that, then get ya another glass of kool-aid and reach deep into your pockets and don't forget the pom-poms. Arnel will get them no more world wide exposure than what they have already had in the recent and distance past. And believe me, the "core" US fans don't exist past this forum and Journey's "official" forum. Half of the concert goers don't even know Steve Perry isn't in the band anymore. This is definitely NOT the best state the band has been in since 1987. Maybe the best state it's been in since 2005, but that's about it.

And look, none of this is directed at Arnel Pineda. I think he has some good pipes and is a very talented human being. But, honestly, aside from JSS (and we will never know obviously now) the only guy that could make Journey as successful as what you really hope they will be would be Steve Perry himself. Arnel will provide the band with enough to pay the bills and buy an extra bottle or two of grey goose, but to earn them serious cash and make them even remotely what they used to be, it's not going to happen. You'll get new material that you'll listen to for awhile and then go back to the Perry stuff. But what good will be if it's not the magical Journey stuff that made them so hot in the 80's? Sure, I can't prove that JSS would've been the missing ingredient, but I believe he was.

PS And it's quite ridiculous to say Arnel Pineda sings circles around Jeff Scott Soto. That's wrong on so many levels that it's not even funny.

Hi there styxie. Just remember the same thing happened when JSS joined. It was just as bad then.

Journey was going to re-record the hits when Jeff was part of the band, I still didn't agree with it. As much as I am a full fledge support of Jeff, I just feel classic hits should be left alone.

Where would Jeff have taken Journey? While it's speculation at best, I'd say slowly into obscurity. Jeff is a great guy and even greater to his fans but he's been in the U.S. for 20+ years and virtually everyone in the business knows who he is. I certainly don't see people banging down his door offering him lead singing positions. If anyone is "drinking kool-aid' it's those that are waiting and hoping for his "big break" or for someone to "notice him." While the first may still happen, the second already has. What's even more ridiculous is the notion that a band with a catalog as signature and defined around a high tenor voice and tremendous range was going to succeed in a "different direction." In the world of professional music there are tons of Jeff Scott Soto's. While only a handful can match his warmth and generosity to his fans, there are a great many that can sing as well or better. Journey took a bold chance. They found a diamond in the rough and are banking on their years in the business to refine Arnel into a real treasure. Will that happen? Not sure, but I will say this...that motherfucker can sing his ass off and if he continues to improve even a little bit month to month, Journey will have a one in a million singer...something only a "kool-aid" drinker could ever believe Jeff Scott Soto is.

And I say, don't fool yourself. Arnel is a very good talent. I have admitted that. And, it's your opinion against mine (and we all know what they say about opinions.) You underestimate Jeff Scott Soto because you haven't taken the time to follow his career. Yes, he isn't a household name like Steve Perry, but he's well respected in the business and he can cover a wild range of material. He covered the Journey songs quite well. Heck, I don't remember seeing too many bad reviews about the guy when he was in Journey. And yes, Jeff is a class act. I'm sure Arnel is also a class act. And certainly I know personally that Jeremey is a class act. But honestly, no matter how good Journey fans may think the new material is, the chances of it being successful is not very good. If they sell a lot of these albums, it will be because the greatest hits CD that a lot will pick up because they think it's the original recordings.

I know I sound like sour grapes, and maybe so. I am not anti-Journey. I've just grown quite tired of the revolving door with vocalists. Unless Perry himself comes back to the band, I would rather have the band go in a completely different direction, vocally, rather than to have someone else try to sing like Perry. In my humble opinion, I believe Jeremey is the closest one with that, and I would much rather hear him and his band cover the old material rather than Journey at this point. I just expect the very best from Journey. They have always been my #1 favorite band of all times, and I hold them at a much higher expectation than other bands. At this point, I know when it becomes all about the money and not so much about the music....and I just don't like the vibe with that. I see this as Journey's swan song. And if I'm wrong....awesome! I really hope I am. I hope for the sake of Journey fans, the band itself, and certainly Arnel for living out his dream. But, I'm not going to drink the kool-aid. I'm going to look at this from a realistic point of view.

Jeff is definitely a class act. I went to see his show in Fort Worth. He came out to the bar and sat with us and ate his dinner. I asked if I could take a picture and he said sure, and I started to point the camera at him and he said, "Wait, let someone take a picture of you and me together." What other musician would do that? I had never even met the man before, except exchanging comments in threads on here. He is the coolest musician I've ever met.

Great post, great opinions and presented well. Lots of respect toward you, dude. Not too much I can disagree with in there. Good debate, man. 8)

Right back at ya man! Respect your way as well. We both can agree, it is all about the music! ;)
