Not even remotely close. Pat is awesome but Wilson can sing her jockey sized ass under the table.

Ann Wilson. Without a doubt. Best female ROCK singer EVER.
Joplin? whatever. I hated her.
Slick? BORING.
Benatar's okay, but she does not have the emotion or balls that Ann does. No chick does. Ann is tops. I could give a rat's ass on her weight. Any woman that can sing like that can weigh as much as she wants.

For best chick vocalist period, I gotta go with Agulera. I cannot believe the stuff she can do.
Now if she'll just stop tapping the mic when she sings, drives me crazy.

In the "I'm really sick of her" category, I gotta go with Mariah Carey. Great singer, but she's too image conscious and you can tell she's incredibly stuck on herself. No thanks.

Also- WHAT is the big deal about Stevie Nicks? She has a range of about 5 notes and as a show person... gimme a break. She stands in one place and plays with her dress. She is SO over rated. As a songwriter, good songwriter. As a vocalist... please, get real.

Freddie Mercury's also great... oh, wait.

I'm not denying Ann has an amazing voice, I think she is one of the greats, but she doesn't have the operatic quality to her voice Pat does. Apples and oranges, imo.

If you're looking for emotion in Pat, listen to Hell is For Children, Suffer The Little Children, Outlaw Blues, Wuthering Heights, One Love, or the live version of I Want Out.

I agree Dean. I'm also a fan of Pat Benatar. Pat rocked her ass off, back in the day. That said, Ann Wilson wins this one, going away! I've heard Ann Wilson hit some UNREAL notes, over the years, and NEVER once heard the woman's voice crack, even a little!

Ann Wilson for me.
I also like Benatar. But Wilson wins for me.

Anyone remember this lady? Underrated voice, I think. The big time evaded her, but I think her voice is great. She's more famous for trite pop duets with Elton John but she can sing rock, too.

Loved Kiki Dee!
She also did back-up on some of Elton's early stuff, which I think are some of the best albums ever recorded. So she gets a pass from me.

Nice call, SusieP!

Ha ha! You remembered! Way cool!

Have you checked out Shelby Lynne's "Just a Little Lovin" CD? She does a fantastic job of paying tribute to Dusty. I say paying tribute instead of covering, because she puts hew own bluesy/folky spin on the songs. Really terrific job.

Shelby's an American singer/songwriter. She won a grammy for best new artist a few years back, despite the fact that she already recorded a number of prior albums :?

Very soulful, passionate singer. One of my favorites.

*Note to the fellas - she's very easy on the eyes too!

Nice take on the songs. Thanks for posting the links.:)
Her name was in my head as a country singer but I wasn't really sure who she was. The UK reviews of this album were all favourable but the concensus was that they all wished she would make up her mind what her 'direction' is. They like to put people into genres over here, and if they can't say, yeh she's rock or she's pop or whatever they don't like it.

Sade's not a rock singer though LD.

If you are talking pure honeyed vocals then you need to list Karen Carpenter, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan etc etc.

IF Sade is a rock singer [and Elvis is a rock singer as someone said on the male rock singer's thread] I really need to re think my music categories.

Come on Deb...Benatar is the equivalent of Perry? I love Pat Benatar but she's not close to Ann Wilson, in terms of power and range (which is what Perry was known for)!

John from Boston

You haven't listened to much of her deeper album cuts then. The only person that can even come CLOSE to her range of octaves is Mariah Carey. Especially some of her latter day stuff where her voice has matured.

Who can Mariah Carey come "close" to? Might want to reverse that.....NOBODY can come close to Mariah Carey. She holds the Guiness record for largest vocal range, and also the highest note ever hit by a human......dolphins are the only mammals that can get that high. But Mariah really isn't "rock".

I'd agree that Ann Wilson is the best female rock singer. I'd also agree that Gretchen Wilson would be a great rock singer....who saw her to "Barracuda" with Alice in Chains at the VH1 Rock Honors tribute for Heart? She practically sounded like Ann Wilson....hit every note effortlessly.

Pat Benetar has lost a bit off her voice, but in her prime she was as good as anyone.

Linda Ronstadt was another great one.
