When I saw them last year in Phoenix, it was clear there was no lipping. It was also clear that Elliott's voice is a small fraction of what it once was. Years of singing DL songs has taken it's toll on his voice. Those "amazing live vocals" simply aren't there anymore. I would rephrase your statement to "the band WAS known for their amazing live vocals". Still a great band but vocally a shell of what they once were.

not many bands are what they were 20/30 years ago.

like Journey, 3 singers later.....

Joe deserves all the credit he can get. He is doing a great job 30 Years later

Agree totally. The only difference is that Journey has replaced their older singers with younger to try to maintain their vocal strength. It has been costly for them as fans seem to want the original singer, thinking that the band will not sound the same without the original singer. It's a tradeoff but for me, I was very disappointed with DL, because the vocals simply weren't there like the originally recordings. No blame to J.E., he has done a great job and is a huge part of the band, it is just not possible to sing DL or Journey vocals for 30 years at the same level. Personally I just prefer Journey's approach, trying to be as strong as they were on the recording.

I will take full exception to the fact that anyone says Def Leppard Lip Syncs...I have personal experience that tells me otherwise.....and in fact have been to a concert where tehy proved otherwise. They just have this uncanny ability to reproduce their sound live....and it's been proven...multiple times.

If vocals that are a "shell" of what they once were and should be are your flavor, have at it.

Glorified cover band? Kevin Shirley, TBF producer with the former lead Perry of the "non-cover" band, said he thinks Revelations is the best album from Journey since Escape. In addition he said Arnels vocals are the best vocals he has heard from Journey, bar none. Bands evolve, they change members, that is a fact. So calling a band with new members a cover band is naive at best. Let's at least be open to the product that the band puts out....Revelations I predict will be a rebirth for Journey.....

Exactly. There may be enhancements to the band's sound and samples and triggered backing vocals or whatever...but I don't buy the lead vocal BS at all. Joe's live....too easy to tell!

I Hate to break it to you Andrew, but I saw them live (Front row) with Journey and counted 7 times where Joe lipped! All of these instances happened right after a song would finish, and he would say something to the audience. No sound would come out. They had to bring the levels back up on his mic, and it couldn't have been more obvious. I was pissed hearing that. I don't think many other people there noticed, but as a fan I was SERIOUSLY let down!

I did go see them again later that year with Journey, and that time I didn't catch him once. I did notice that his vocals sounded a little rougher that show also.

As far as backing vocals go.....If any of you think they don't pipe in additional pre-recorded tracks.....I've got some ocean-front property for sale in Arizona! They are for the most part all great singers, but even in their heyday they used backing tracks. Just like Journey did in the later Perry years. Listen to any of the live concert footage with Randy Jackson, and your hearing actual backing vocals from the ROR album! That's about 20 Steve Perry's on stage at the same time. He's good.....but not THAT good!

Prove it, thats all i can say

and as for bringing a Mic back up, if they are playing to a click track..the audio board is probably programmed to kill the sound after the sequence has played. Most boards are automated these days and programming the mix like that isnt unheard of.

don't confuse programming a live mix with pre recorded vocals.

I have an audio background in live broadcast television on automated audio consoles. Once a segment or in this case a song is over it's common to kill or mute the Mic or mix. In this case the Mic was probably muted in between songs in case joe yelled at the techs or had to cough etc etc. it's easliy explainable.

ill be waiting for your proof. start syncing those shows up with the CD's

Dude,

I love Def Leppard as much as you do. I don't have a background in Audio/broadcast television, but I've been a musician my entire life! I was standing 10 feet from the guy. When I say "at the end of the songs", there were times when the music hadn't even quit playing! There were also 2 or 3 times when in-between vocal lines (Right in the middle of the song) that Joe would shout something out to us in the audience with ZERO sound coming from the mic. Unless they mute him after each sentence in a song...the shit was lipped!

I'm not saying he lipped for the entire show either, because there were songs that he sounded NOTICEABLY different. He'd sound great on one song, then the next song would sound like complete SHIT. Again, I don't have a degree in sound production or audio, but I have pretty damn well-trained ears. That's all the proof I need. If you want someone to prove it to you, you'll have to talk to Deano, Jeremey, or someone who's up on that stuff.

Exactly. I'm thrilled that bands like Journey, Def Lep, Styx, Heart and a few others are out there on the road summer after summer, doing 100+ dates, working their middle-aged asses off every single night so that fans like me still have a chance to hear live the music that is such an important part of our lives. So Joe struggles with the high notes and the backing vox may be enhanced, big damn deal. I've got tix for San Diego a week from tonight; I'll be standing up singing right along with him and enjoying every minute. All comes down to feeling entitled versus feeling blessed, and I choose the latter.

PM's seem stuck in the outbox for some reason; anyway, go to Craigslist for San Diego, click on tickets, search for Def Lep; two different people have single tix in first ten rows for list price.

Oh here we go, Deano is 100% right about you. What the hell are you smoking? bands evolve? Arnel being better than Perry. Get the hell out of here and i've never seen that written anywhere, . I remember reading your rantings about Augeri being a more powefull vocalist than Perry over at backtalk. This is retarded, and if I keep reading the dribble you post, i'll probably feel a lot more stupid.

I don't smoke and despise smoking. I didn't say Arnel was better than Perry. I was quoting what Kevin Shirley said and just making the point that THIS singer appears to be worth of Journey's strong vocal history and thus is worth being open-minded to- Journey did not end with Perry dropping out of the band! I never said Augeri was more powerful than Perry, although I was certainly guilty of being pro-Augeri. I've since came to my senses and think Augeri was a big mistake as lead singer for Journey. You don't have to read my posts dude.
