Thanks. I think there really is a lot Steve has to feel guilty about (and which he is trying to deny to himself) and it has to do with hubris (pride) and selfishness. (Nothing you haven't heard before....) At least this is the way Journey seem to interpret his behavior and he knows it.

He was on top of the world after Street Talk and really wanted a solo career; he felt he was great the superstar of Journey and didn't need them. He had a 3 album solo contract He went back because his ailing Mother told him to.

After taking control of ROR (arrogance) and messing up the band in some REAL ways with that (that he does openly regret) the king of the hill got some real painful injuries as his voice diminished, he lost Sherry and his Mom died. He hated Journey and it is certainly reasonable to believe as Journey did that he wanted out to pursue his solo work, but he found a dishonest way out. Maybe he did, though he denies it. Still, after caregiving his grandfather, rather than return to Journey he went to work on his second solo album which reinforces the idea that steve felt his greatness alone was enough.. That is when he got his real ego-deflating spanking, when Sony turned down Against the Wall. Rude awakening, that.

The next few year his voice was deteriorating and his solo career was shaky. But he couldn't go back to Journey given the manipulation he pulled a few years earlier and besides, the other guys were in new projects. So he goes on and tries to work on his third solo album. He finally gets it together with FTLOSM in which he admits he blew it with Journey in the song Anyway. He goes on with the FTLOSM tour which proves to him he can't do it alone for sure. He decides his last hope is to rejoin Journey, which appears to be reforming and he has to act because 1) they are about to hire a new singer and 2) They are approaching the 10 year anniversary when royalties diminish and 3) He needs the band to make any kind of comeback musically that he couldn't pull off alone.

Then the shit hits the fan with TBF.

Whether or not he really injured his hip, and I believe he did, his lengthy absence from Journey and slow process of dealing with his medical problems really appear convenient if he couldn't go forward vocally, emotionally, or physically, and needed a way out of the contract to tour.

All that is past. Now he can't face Journey and doesn't want to dredge up the guilt over being manipulative, arrogant, and maybe dishonest. So he stays completely away from them and his past and lets everyone think it is because journey hurt him by not waiting for him.

This in no way minimizes the way Journey may have been crappy to Steve, and that his talent is what made Journey superstars. No doubt about that. He brought greatness to the group (Neal's talent was extraordinary but never would've brought wealth and acclaim.) Anyway, they seem to have less anger with Steve over the past than he has guilt and anger (which is evident in the complete avoidance he maintains, rather than the words he speaks.)

Whew.
Great, theory. :) :)

Thanks. I neglected to mention that the true anger Journey feels about what happened with TBF is likely because they think Steve never intended to tour (as HH has admitted.) Which means they feel manipulated into reforming with Steve rather than someone else in order to give him 10 more years of royalties after they split.I hope I am wrong.

Peridactyl, great timeline and insight. I've always believed, too, he wanted a solo career and was forced back to Journey for TBF and beyond the hip problem, didn't have his heart in it for touring.

But "manipulative, arrogant, maybe dishonest," I don't believe he will ever see himself in that light or have that kind of insight about himself regarding the band.

I agree He will never see it in himself because probably in his mind he felt his way was the right way then and even to some point maybe he still see it that way. I think possibly a lot of his refusal to interact with the other guys is shame over being fired himself after firing Ross and Steve and forcing the termination of Herbie; he didn't see it coming but he should have; what goes around tend to come around.

I have to admit I still think he was a great singer and will always enjoy hearing him sing but he was somewhat lacking in personality.A good singer with bad qualities. The scale for me is balancing more toward herbie's side of the story; not all the way but some of the way.

I see this started when Neal made an album and Herbie warned Neal not to run around on the bride(SP). Steve mentioned it on one of the BTM interviews. All of them acted like children with tantrums !

Not for me!! Herbie is an asshole, through and through, and money was his only objective. Steve is an artist but arrogant and could be (and was, perhaps) a shit at times, but he is not just that. I mean, Neal was drinking, Ross is kinda dumb, Steve Smith is not the sharpest tack in the world, and Herbie is gross and a bastard, though he made Journey a ton of money, they made him a ton of money, and that's his main concern, IMHO. Cain was the only one other than Steve Perry)with a brain that was working, and anyway, the band admits they let Steve take control. He was just a hick from central California before Journey and he was on his own going head to head against Herbie a lot of the time (him and his attorneys.) Herbie would've wrung the group dry if he could've. No doubt about it. Money money money money. Doesn't work with a countertenor voice like steves. It was an unhealthy atmosphere in a number of ways. So Steve sang and kept away from the group except creatively. Maybe. Just a thought.....Anyway, Steve could easily feel he had to take control or jump ship for better offers at times.

watched too many interviews. ever see Ross' intro of the group back in the 70's? total jerk. And Smith seems sweet and not brilliant. Herbie said the group were hippies before steve but steve was not, and a prick. i think that is herbie saying the group was fucked up and easily led business-wise. Steve wouldn't let herbie make all the decisions. the others would.

Well, there's probably some truth in HH's interview. But a lot of what he says is colored by the fact that Steve Perry wanted him out, so he has a bias from that standpoint regarding his views on Steve Perry. HH even has an attitude towards Jon Cain, probably more than anything because he made the call for Steve. A lot of it is interesting, what HH says and informative, but some you might have to take with a grain of salt. But, basically, you have to take everybody's story, if there was one from everybody, which there's not, and in the middle somewhere is the truth.

Jana, you are absolutely right. This is all conjecture based on what is out in the public about the guys. Who knows what we don't know and anyway, we weren't there!! But it makes for interesting speculation... :D

Peridactyl, hell, yeah, it does. I've been working on a boring project on the computer all day due tomorrow, and my only relief from it all was to keep jumping over here every so often for a break. But we've still never figured out his complicated private life regarding romantic relationships or lack thereof and is he a loner regarding relationships? Except we now know he does have a daughter and grandchildren.

If I remember correctly Steve had talked to herbie about his concerns about Neal doing a solo and herbie had told Neal what he and steve had talked about; which then caused Neal to run head on into doing the solo thing which then caused Steve to do his own solo album, which herbie openly admit in an interview that he pulled out pretty much some hanky panky to get it up the charts; thus IMO giving steve the impression that he didn't need Journey anymore. ( a way to get rid of Steve and keep control of everything the key to that being Neal). Even though Herbie states over and over that Neal is like a son to him. (1) He never misses a chance to cut Neal down with some kind of belittling remark. (2)He has said he would have gotten rid of steve in 1984, if he could have.(3) He told Ross that steve hated him during the ROR episode(4) He basically called them all stupid, and that he wouldn't be surprised if they ended up selling pencils on the street.(5) He gloated about how much money he has, and how dumb they were to sell properities that the band owned in the 1980's and gloated about how rich it had made him by buying Nocturne from them because they were young and stupid,(6) He said he loved them but apparently divided them by talking about one in a negative manner to the other behind their backs. Now this is JMO he kept them fighting among themselves while he was most likely robbing them blind. Isn't that something? Steve desn't spill the beans about his love life!! Wonder why he did with Sherry? Anyway, he definitely is private but he is a private citizen and not a rock star anymore. Who's living in the past? Him or us?

Ooooooooooooooo Annpea, BRILLIANT!!!!! I never thought of any of this. So interesting!!!! Great analysis!!! This was all happening after Frontiers which is when Steve and Herbie really fought it out over touring and everything! Makes sense!
Herbie always said the group would be just fine with another singer. Steve may have become too much of a liability, and was fucking around with the Journey BRAND that Herbie is so proud of and is so angry about losing control of!!

YES

Good job!!

Peridactyl, that's a great question. We're living in the past  : And I could have been done an hour ago on this project I've been working on all day that's due, but since I've been dissecting Steve Perry's life here and there today, I now, unfortunately, have an hour more to go, stuck in the house on the computer. Who's crying now? Now I can't go to the movies.

Voyager wrote:I think Perry isolates himself because he is a tormented soul. A lot of artists who are driven to prove their worth are running from inner demons from their childhood. When Perry said "I've never felt like a part of the band" during the VH1 BTM interview, I believe he was revealing something deeper that was going on inside himself. He is a loner type. He didn't feel like he fit in the band, because he probably doesn't feel like he fits anywhere. If he did, he would have people around him... and he would probably be performing too.

I'll bet there are people on this forum just like Perry. A lot of people who spend time on online forums are people who isolate.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Jana/ Peridactyl, I have enjoyed talking to you all it really feels nice to discuss a topic and express opinions without fighting over basic theories that we all know are just that a theory and not a verifiable truth. :D :D

Divide and conquer and walk away with the jackpot.

No wonder Steve insisted onHerbie being fired when he came back to do TBF. Herbie was the cancer on the group! And Steve was trying to save them so they could work together without Herbie's venomous manipulation pulling them apart!!!

Maybe that was why the group didn't put up much of a fight when Steve insisted on dumping Herbie. Though I wonder if Steve was the only one smart enough to see what a Judus Herbie was (Cain sounded upset about telling Herbie to go on Behind the Music.)

Probably very complicated. The group might've seen both herbie and Steve as equally arrogant assholes who were pulling on their chains and they just swayed with the wind of the moment.....

'Spossible. It explains so much of what has been said and what we know happened between the band members. The missing element!!!
I love it.

OH Jana, I'm sorry. Last weekend I hung out on the Board instead of finishing my overdue income taxes.

Kinda sad, huh?

I think I'll sign off and go watch the Presidential coverage on MSNBC.

But I may be back....(I will. I'm weak..... :D )

 at this whole thread. I'm glad I missed it. Winter is coming people... very few nice days left. Go out and enjoy them. 8) Maybe you'll actually run into Steve Perry that way and you can see first hand if he's by himself or not. :?

BJG, almost every day is summer in Florida. Since I had to work on the computer all day Sunday on a project, I took Monday off. While everybody is working, we will be on the lake kayaking. :D But I will keep an eye out for a Steve Perry sighting on the lake

Except we now know he does have a daughter and grandchildren.

Re: Why is Steve Perry always alone in public ?

Liquid_Drummer wrote:Never has a anyone with him. Never sighted in public with a presumed girlfriend since Sherry. Anytime that I can think of where he was in public just getting food and gets a photo snapped by someone with a cell or something he is always alone. Seems like he lives a very isolated life if true.. Price of fame.... No thanks. I really dont want to be nosey about his personal life its just that I find my self wondering if that is the price he has to pay for his fame..

No ex-girlfriends, old high school chums have ever said much of anything about him to the media and it seems he would be at high risk for some ex to write a book to cash in on his name. Since he is so secretive and people are so nosey it really shocks me that he has been able to keep the lid on so tight..

I must make everyone he meets sign an NDA. Maybe he caries around a 12 pack of Nda's in his wallet !

He's just a jive motherf-cker.

Living in LA., I see stars or past idols all the time, but I don't see them always being recognised or hounded unless they are on a show right at this moment that is doing well or has some buzz with the media. There are the spoons of course, that will piddle if he is in the vicinity, but for the most part, Perry hasn't done anything to garner attention lately. In our little world he always appears foremost and center but in the real world, he isn't exactly a Madonna or a Brad Pitt type at this day and age. Journey was front and center a few months ago and maybe he laid low for a little bit during that time, but I think he leads a normal life for the most part. I have seen him twice in Hollywood and once in Burbank. Only one person approached him for an autograph (he seemed to honor the request). He was never alone, either he was with another guy, or with a man and a woman.

True, I think you hit the nail on the head. A friend in Burbank has seen him a couple times. Just because it is him that is being photgraphed most of the time doesn't necessarily mean he's alone. My friend and her husband were having dinner at the same restaurant.......he was with people and she didn't approach him...but her hubby got quite a chuckle from her reaction when they recognized him.
