Come on dude. This went on for a solid YEAR with Steve Augeri recordings, every single false note mocked for page after page.

There's nothing wrong w/ AJM posting this, I don't recall ever seeing him weigh in on it.

This is 17 years old. Why resurrect it again?

Because it is now available streaming from the "Vault" of the guy the memorial was for. While you have been able to see poor quality versions of two songs for a while, it has not been available like this...

And why set the tone for this thread by calling it awful? I'm afraid you've lost me on this one, Drew. There was nothing awful about that performance or that day. Journey hadn't been together in years - Steve hadn't sung a note in years. It was all about respect for Bill Graham. I was at the concert and I know how magic that day was. If I remember correctly, the bands were told they were going to play acoustic which is why Ross & Steve Smith weren't there. As it turned out, that wasn't the case but communication wasn't the greatest when this event was being set up.

I agree with Dan in that I think Journey were probably a bit shocked at lack of reaction from the crowd. Steve was trying everything he could do, but he was singing to a bunch of stoned Deadheads that had no clue about the words to "Lights" or "Faithfully." I would guess the first 1/3 of that crowd from the stage back were Deadheads as they got there the day before and camped out. CP and I went early the day of the show and were all the way back to the soundboard.

I was proud to be there and proud that my favorite band came together that day to pay their respects to a true legend.

Even the best have their bad days... Steve is one of the best ever.... you know how I feel. But that was hard to listen to.

This has nothing to do with being a Perry fan. It's just being realistic about the circumstances. It wasn't a rehearsed or planned performance. It's not fare to compare or critique, regardless who the performer was.

Let's say the greatest pitcher in baseball were asked to throw out the first pitch at a game after not picking up a ball in years. Would you expect him to throw 90+ mph as he did in his prime? Hell no. But you would be silly to judge him on that throw, especially 17 years after the fact.

All true.. But still doesn't make it easy to listen to. This is coming from a Perry worshipper too.

You know, everytime I hear this show and then listen to people critisize, it makes me realize it's all relative.

Are the keys dropped? Yes? Are the vocals on, pitch wise? Yes. Does he still sound like himself? Yes.
Does he still sound better than almost anyone out there? Yes.

I've already stated that I (and many others) prefer SP's voice Frontier's and beyond, and I know that thousands of singers would DIE to sound as good as SP in his "diminished state"

His voice is great in any of the 3 states that it's been in and is still one of the 2 or 3 most recognizable in the history of Rock/Popular music.

Anyone that argues that there is something wrong with this performance, other than a lyric slip-up, or the fact that the keys are dropped and they just don't like that, doesn't know anything about singing.

As a singer myself, You have to sing from 'within' to get across the song, even in range. If your body is not into it you can bet your vocal chords won't be (as they're not supported!) something SP was a master of, this just shows what he means when he says that he makes music when he 'has something to say musically'. This is not just him being a premadonna.

I agree with LLL. Even though on the last thread that asked the question, I stated that was his worst vocal performance just because he was rusty from not singing, but then I added he looked extremely handsome. So I would have still been satisfied at the concert. I'm very shallow too .

It just seemed off from the standpoint of being a trio up there without Ross and Steve S. I still wonder if they were asked to perform with them and they were still pissed over being fired for ROR and wouldn't or if they were never even asked to perform with them there.
