Tuned down. If it's going to save his voice, I'm okay with it. But it's very clearly tuned down. From what I can tell on other clips, they aren't tuning down every show.

Hm, tuning down doesn't bug me on some songs, but on songs with a "soaring" melody, especially in the verse, I really feel like tuning down, even half a step as it is here, really kills the momentum of the song.

So, I hope the show I make it to is in E standard...

Upon further review, it looks like everything is tuned down here. I wonder what the decision-making process is for determining whether to tune down or not.

5 close concert dates? Too many gigs back to back or close to back to back would kill anyone.

Probably true. At least they're taking preventative measures if they schedule like that. But the easiest thing would be to give more days off between shows. I know it's not always possible, so it's good to see they're not playing it as-written every show.

The demand for the Hawaii concerts was high. They had originally only planned 1 gig in Honolulu, but when it sold out in 2 hours, they decided they needed to give the people what they wanted, an extra date. That too sold out even faster than the 1st, so now we got gig #3.

Edit: I really like this one, because it's close enough and quiet enough that you can hear the interaction between Jonathan and Neal in the prelude to the song. The acoustics echo Neal's guitar in a very impressive manner.
Man they lowered that song a bit.

Arnel nearly smacks it a few times. Wonder if that was for recording or for in ears (live crowd mic).

By the way, this video obviously show's a band and singer that nobody likes. I give them until next Tuesday before Neal quits in frustration.

;)

How anyone can say Journey is not knocking them dead with this lineup is completely beyond me. I haven't seen crowds like them this much since.... well, you know. They're kicking ass.

Those microphones are so they can her the crowd noise...not neccesarily for recording.

You're right. Definitely tuned down. At first I thought Arnel's voice sounded strange, then I realized it's tuned down. Kinda weird how some shows are tuned down and others are not. Most people don't notice and don't care, but if you are a musician or play an instrument and have good pitch it can be a little bothersome. His voice sounds deeper when the songs are lowered and his tone is a little diminished by it (as in the sweet spot in his voice is now lower and different). HOWEVER, Arnel is sounding way better than the last tour so far. Major consistent performances. Hope he stays healthy for the whole tour!

I bet the only reason they tuned up was for the DVD shoot as every show before and after have been down tuned. I bet the whole tour is tuned 1/2 step down as it is now.

It's late and I just popped on but I don't hear the tunedown. I am tired though but all I hear is great Journey Music, albeit most of it made popular with THE STEVE at the helm, but with AP, IAG. It's All Good.

The drop in tuning has helping him big time. It hurts the momentum of some songs but I think you get used to it after a bit.

Totally agree. Just saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux3Ci_wA ... re=channel and I say I am impressed especially his cries towards the end. I swear I had goosebumps. Can't wait to see AP kill this song live!

I also like that he has toned down his jumping and running on the stage. Not that I don't like it but I want him to save his energy for high intensity muzak!

This is the first time I've seen Journey do something smart to save a singer's voice. Some gigs, when there are a lot in a row, tune down. Otherwise, go standard. Great approach if you ask me.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Maui Tom, were there five shows in Hawaii or four? I've read four on JM, and then I saw a list someone posted with five. Do you have any idea?

No, I'm pretty sure not every show is tuned down. I listened to the Macau, China clips for example, and they sound fine. Some of the other Hawaii clips are in the original key, too. I think it's on a show-by-show basis.

Thanks. I wonder if the other two shows sold out quickly like the three shows that sold out in two hours . Good for them. They must be pleased with the response in Hawaii.

Agree with what you said also.

Also with Arnel's diction, esp with the 'Aaaaahhh'sss" He was the worst with that on Dont Stop Believin'.

Heres's the clip on DSB in Hawaii. I don't think he did 1 "aaaaHHhh"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuZRzt9d ... re=channel

Good for him! Makes him an even better vocalist and he was one damn good one to begin with.

LOL.

I'm honestly surprised at Ross in that pic. He seems like the person that would be the life of an event like that.

Edit: He really looks like that weird aunt that no one invites to family functions. Oh, and I do believe that Neal has found wife number 17. :D
