Wow! My gosh, that lady has an absolutely beautiful voice! :)

Lady? Are you sure it's a lady? Looks like a man with a wig to me:

Yes, she is a lady...no doubt about it. With her personality ...her pleasantness, gentleness, graciousness, quite strength....her modesty, her manners....no other way to define her except to call her a lady.
From what I've seen of her, she radiates from within, so she is in fact a beautiful lady....with the voice of an angel.

Your comment can be viewed as ugliness in you.
I haven't seen you but you gotta watch that kind of thing because no matter what you look like on the outside , if your personality is ugly...ugly enough to degrade others... you will be viewed that way.

The gal needs a pair of tweezers though. :P

Why? If she wants to then fine..but maybe she doesn't want to tweeze to please others.
Are you the picture of perfection? Are any of us?
I won't criticise and degrade you Deb...I doubt this lady would either.

Jiminey H Cricket, Phyl, take a chill pill. It was a joke.....re: the "razz" smiley.

I know it was but I take oppotunities to make a point when needed...not just talking to you (if ya know what I mean).
I am perfectly chill in attitude...just not physically. It's dang humid today!  8)

Sure she's great just as she wants to be. But there's nothing at all wrong with taking a little pride in your appearance. Hygiene and maintenance is not conformity. You wouldn't go to court in a nightgown and greasy-hair would you? She's free to do as she pleases, I was just pointing out that with a little refinement, she wouldn't be the frump that people saw her as. :)
No, nothing wrong with taking pride in appearance and I do agree she could make a few changes....eyebrows, wardrobe...that would make hers more appealing but the greater lesson in acceptance of others and in not judging someone....someone being a little different...that their difference causes them to be shunned by others unfairly...is there to be learned.

The way people jump to judgement of someone by just their appearance without knowing them..or even trying to get to know them because of what they look like. Many, like her, who have went years unnoticed who have a gift to share. My point is that she shouldn't have to conform to what others want but should be herself ...how she wants to be, and if she doesn't want to change her appearance she shouldn't have to. Who's standard of beauty should she have to meet for acceptance? Some say just pluck the eyebrows...some would go further and say lose weight...not enough for some? It would take a bunch of plastic surgery to please others standards. So where does it end?

I don't care what she looks like..I accept her as she is and want to hear her sing more...her appearance doesn't have anything to do with her ability to sing..it just has to due with the superficiality in others in their acceptance of her or not
Oh...and as far as hygiene goes she looks clean....but yes, everyone should be hygienic and respectful enough of themselves to be so...that's a different thing then what someone looks like....how they were born to look. 8)

Indeed. I like this. ^ It's very true.

As Rhi said, there's nothing wrong with (or wrong with suggesting someone might need) basic maintanance, hygiene, etc. But in the end, if you have a poor personality, what good is it? Some of the most (allegedly) beautiful people in the world could also be the biggest a-holes.

I have an example... I know a woman who is very into fashion, shoes, handbags, jewelry, makeup, the works... and I'm talking serious money - name brand everything... puts a lot of work into the outside... but her personality and behavior and the way she treats people needs a very very serious overhaul.

I'd rather be the person that I am now - not apathetic about appearance, but not so obsessed that all my effort goes into impression and have people who know me appreciate my personality then to have people think I'm a jerk. Which, before any of the peanut gallery jumps in here, I'm not.

I'm not directing this at you personally but it could be something else said...
Someone could say your weight is part of maintenance and that you should lose some...maybe your hips or legs don't conform to a "standard" of what others believe you should look like. Plucking eyebrows is maintenance but so is weight control. Again, just making a point ...maybe you should watch what you eat more and could stand to lose some weight. Some people have a tendency to have thick legs, a big butt...whatever...no matter what they do to lose it. They could work out everyday and still be thick in one area or another and would only be thinner in the area if they got surgery to alter it. That's my point...no one is perfect and where does the criticism end until the acceptance begins? In my opinion people should be criticised on their actions and not their appearance. I think that personality shows more towards someones appearance then their skin does. Beauty within radiates out....and it's far better to have some beauty on the inside. :)

You know what, I hope they do give this lady a makeover.
I think she would get great pleasure from being pampered and made a fuss over.
My guess is she hasn't had a lot of attention or pampering.

And I think she would enjoy being treated to a new frock, hairdo and a spa day or something.

Specially if someone else was paying for it.

Simon....get your cheque book out.

I just checked. In just a few days her hits on youtube on this one clip alone has gone from around seven million to nineteen and a half million. All of this attention just from the audition part of the competition. In four weeks or so she will be performing in the actual competition part. What pressure to be perfect with all of this media blitz going on regarding her. I have faith she will stay grounded and focus on that.

One report says she's had over 30 million hits total on YouTube.

Well said. I used to have a neighbor who was morbidly obese.....but she was the sweetest woman you would ever want to meet...she would do anything she could for others often and did a great deal for me. I also had a morbidly obese teacher in 5th grade who was as mean as she could be.

I have known many people...like the one you talk of....both men and woman who are considered very attractive on the outside but their personality's make them ugly to me. I also had a friend in school ( her name was Phyllis too!) and she was beautiful...after getting to know her she was still beautiful.

Another lesson I've learned along the way was after my dad had open heart surgery...he had a major stroke during it and was in a coma for a couple months...they said he was brain dead and we decided to take the machines off and let him go. Well..he woke from the coma when they did and lived for 5 more years. He was an invalid those years though. I used to take him to the mall and people would stare. He was in a wheelchair and would drool sometimes and could barely talk and one hand would shake and he had a pee bag by his side. Yep, many people were rude as heck. He was aware of everything and aware of their stares and would hear their comments when they must not have thought he could.

He didn't mind the children because they were just curious and had honest innocence and would come right up and ask what happened to him...they were young and learning. Adults should have already learned enough along the way not to stare and make faces...that bothered him...not the kids. He used to be a very handsome man on the outside....and they didn't know him as the person he was but just judged him by appearances...appearances he couldn't help. We were happy to have him with us longer no matter what he looked like and I was never ashamed or embarrassed to be with him...I was embarrassed for the people who were rude ...so superficial and immediately judged without learning more and knowing him. Fact is my dad became more handsome to me... more of a beautiful person after he got "broken" then he was before.

So sorry to hear this, a similar thing happened with my uncle who recently passed away. He had something called "CADASIL". From that article regarding Susan appearing on Oprah, it says "And BGT supremo Simon Cowell reckons that if the appearance goes ahead, it will guarantee that her debut album will top the charts in the States."

The female judge was on a morning show, and she said even if Susan doesn't win she knows Simon will sign her to his label because he hears ka-ching, ka-ching. After listening to that recorded song, I can't wait to see what she does in the competition. Good for her. I hope she gets a record deal and has a huge best-selling album.

My condolences for your Uncle.
Yes, people do things from their ignorance. Like in judging people by their outward appearance...like judging by skin color too....or in judging them by their regional and cultural differences..in things they do which is "foreign" to their own ways. Too many remain ignorant instead of learning tolerance, understanding and acceptance of difference's. They rush to judgement and don't keep an open mind and try to learn more of someone before they condemn them.

Yep, people act badly and say stupid things a lot from their own ignorance....and from their own low self esteem...to me when someone has the need to be cruel, call people names...it shows that they have something lacking in them...some insecurities they try to cover up. They use other people and put them down to try to build themselves up...and then believe they are somehow better then the person they are looking down on. It reflects badly on them...not the person they are putting down.

That's a fact. A person that is happy in their own skin and with their life, doesn't usually resort to degrading somebody else to make themself feel better.

Exactly. Some on this board do it all the time....some due to their past experiences..some due to what they may be going thru in life....
...some due to holding grudges of any criticisms they have received of their actions on here ..something they have done which maybe they should have been criticized for it. Instead of considering what was actually said they get overly defensive and resort to name calling and cruelty. Of course some just say something to stir someone else up...but when the criticism is an honest one and said without any intent of malice but for the good..some behavior the person may have to be woken up to how they are being perceived by it...then that is not a bad thing. Sometimes people need to be willing to take an honest look at themselves and make adjustments for their own betterment.

Criticisms of actions is one thing...name calling....making fun of in different ways like appearance or the sex the person is...and just outright trying to be cruel and hurt someone is another and it reflects badly on the person who does it..not the one they do it too....so it's something they need to become aware of so that they don't appear as ugly as they do by their actions....and they should stop and think about why they do it. Ridicule and distortion of what others are or what they have actually said....trying to demonize others and make them go away because you don't like any truths of yourself to be pointed out....these are all a defensive stance..an overly defensive stance which suggests the person has insecurities that they need to address...some things they still need to learn about themselves.

If thats your perception, alright, but if you read all that was said in this thread so far you will see that it did not turn into a pissing match at all and was actually a discussion right to the topic. This story is not only about this lady's beautiful voice but also about perceptions...how people are viewed, judged, etc.......a discussion many have been having all over the net and television since this lady's story got attention. No one got pissed by the discussion this afternoon and actually, I think everyone was pretty much in agreement. If you are only referring to the poster above you....the one that does the behavior I talked about in this thread....yes, he is only trying to bait me... but I won't bite, so no worries there. I would like this thread to stay on topic as well....it's a good positive story ...a good one to talk about in many ways, so once again..thanks for starting it. :)
