Nonsense. Staying true to the highest standards of a band is what the real fan does. Not blindly excusing every mediocre and shabby thing the band gets up to on its downward trajectory...

Do tell.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

With due respect to everyone, it's not that we don't like the other frontmen, it's just our "Journey" started with Arnel.

That's all.

Obviously he's not a fan. Why does he spend time on a Journey forum if he's not a fan???

While I can certainly appreciate, and be in awe of, the incredible vocal acrobatics that Perry delivered it's just not my cup of tea. Songs like Patiently, Good Morning Girl, Lights, LTS and especially Something To Hide make me wanna stick dynamite in my ears and then jump into battery acid.

This is interesting. I too often think that Journey's biggest turning point was a little moreso the additon of Jon Cain. While we all respect everyone in the band, when JC came in the water got a little bit clearer. The lyrics were more mature and the overall album production cleaned-up a bit. The sonic became crisper and the songs more solid. Some of this can also be attributed to Steve Smith. His drums were played & recorded better after the live album. Maybe it was just a producer thing, I don't really know. But in '81, it seems the band just got better, if not completely different.

I do wish though that Gregg Rolie was still in the band. Journey should be a six-piece.

Highest standards, not blindly excusing? Well, if I held my bands up to the highest standards some of them have already let me down, but I love their music and stay with them, accepting their mistakes that at times hurt their band. So re Journey, how about not blindly excusing, but saying they can be assholes or make bad decisions, but I still love them b/c I still love the music and Journey as-is today with Arnel, (which was the right move), and just appreciate their passion for music. My standards are just fine, thank you. : 8)

I think what Matthew meant is that when they fuck up you call them on it. For example, don't sugarcoat it, bury your head in the sand and refuse to believe they lipped when the evidence was overwhelming from day 1. Some fans simply refused to believe they could do so and refused to even "listen" to the evidence. Those aren't "true fans", they're dumbfucks. I don't think he meant that you can't forgive them, but to say that members of the band like Perry, Augeri, Schon and Cain haven't all made some pretty colossal fuck ups would be absurd.

Matthew will clarify his statement if he's still around, but I know him as a fellow perryloon for a number of years. I think he is referring to the music after SP left.

And Monker is a Journey historian. I have always respected his insight -- even when he's ragging on SP. Why can't we all get along?

Everyone here is a Journey fan of some way shape of form.

Some fans are more "iNtErEsTiNg" and "colorful" and perhaps? more "DEDICATED" than the other guy/gal... but we are all fans of the band called Journey. That is why we are here, why we took the time in joining this wonderful place, and listening to Journey's music through the years. Like anything, you take the good things you enjoy and leave the rest for somebody else to enjoy instead. It's not always possible to like everything, but! if you do, then good for you.

Here is my stance on the matter. From the period of 1977 - 1996 is Journey. Sure the name was there before and after Steve Perry, but... it's just a name, just a name.

Hey Vlad! You and I agree..........what makes you a fan, is you are fanatical about this band ...............era doesn't matter. LOON, Spoon, spitoon, etc.................Monker is a dedicated fan, otherwise he would not be so sure of his feelings, but Monker, so are SJ, Annie, Vlad, and others. Just depends on why. This band is surrounded by a lot of love. I see this. Sorry for being so harsh in my joking earlier. I just don't see the sense of putting anyone down for their own views. We don not all have to agree on everything about this band, just seems for one reason or another, we all have loved this band.

Why is it so hard to understand that you can't HATE AND DESPISE something and be a fan of it. There is a difference between not liking a change or an album, or whatever, and HATING the band for it. Yeah, it's their 'right' to hate it. And, it's my right to say that hating something does not equal being a fan of something.

Bullshit. You're telling me there's no difference between a casual who knows 5 or 6 songs, and owns the "Greatest Hits" cd and likes them and still thinks Steve Perry is their singer, compared to someone who owns 25 Journey cd's, has t-shirts, all of their dvd's, has seen them live 6 times and has a Journey poster?   That's just fucking retarded.

I never said I was "Better" than any Journey fan, nor did I say I was their "Biggest". I said I am "one of their biggest fans". I don't sort through their fucking trash cans outside of their houses, nor do I know any of their damn pets names, but I would say I'm a HUGE fan of the band, and so would anyone who knows me.

I can't believe I'm even sitting here wasting my time explaining this shit to you!  Have a great day. 8)

So re Journey, how about not blindly excusing, but saying they can be assholes or make bad decisions, but I still love them b/c I still love the music and Journey as-is today with Arnel, (which was the right move), and just appreciate their passion for music. My standards are just fine, thank you. : 8)

See? Yet another fan............my don't we all come with such varying reasons? I love it! 8)

Exactly. I would never define who is a true fan of Journey, except for myself. With the twists and turns of this band there's no right answer. Too individual.

I'm not saying 'true fan' either...because I don't think their is such a thing. You are either a fan or not...not a 'true fan'. Does that mean there is such a thing as a 'false fan?'

Yes, there is a difference, one is more arrogant then the other and insists on putting a lofty label upon themself.

A fan is a fan..."true' fan", "hardcore fan" are all bullshit terms to make people feel more important then others.

Well, I'm glad I didn't say that then.

If you come on here and say you hate Journey without Steve Perry, then I don't think you are a Journey fan either.

Each love this band in their own way. And each have feelings about the change ups in their own way.

Exactly. And, if you HATE the version of Journey after, or before, one of those "change ups"...then I don't think you are a Journey fan either. Showing such disrespect is not what a fan would do.

And the disecting begins................You just declaired that your version of what a Journey fan must be. I love Journey, and I can understand why some want Perry only to be the lead singer. That is their right. I can get you not wanting people to disrespect the band, but they don't have to like any change up. And they don't need your approval to be a fan. I can see sweet SJ and others    just crying in his pillow tonight because you don't deam him a Journey fan. Tissue SJ?

Why is it so hard to understand that you can't HATE AND DESPISE something and be a fan of it. There is a difference between not liking a change or an album, or whatever, and HATING the band for it. Yeah, it's their 'right' to hate it. And, it's my right to say that hating something does not equal being a fan of something.

I heard once that at the end hate and love something are two side of the same coin..

What would be your take on those songs with Arnel singing them....Like if they decided to do
a show where they played Infinity in it's entirety?

Is it the songs you don't like? Or is it just the way Perry sang them?

Sorry I missed you when you came to town btw, next time....and the first round is on me!

I think you can not like certain parts and still like something as a whole

Absolutely, lets take for example the vagina(love it!)... the top, the bottom, the sides, the inside, the outside...big fan! But the hair...hate it especially when it gets caught in the back of my throat Image

It is certainly possible to 'hate' something that someone does, yet still love the person. IDK if that can apply to a band, but I think it's certainly possible. For example, I "hate" the way JSS was dismissed, and also the way SA was thrown under the bus, but I'm still a huge fan of the SP era Journey. I listen to it nearly every day and it still moves me the way it did 20 years ago. I'm not a fan of today's Journey music, but I'm still a fan of a bygone era. It's what continues to bring me here.

I think there are all levels of fandom, and one shouldn't criticize another for whatever level they're at. JMHO. :)

Anyone else as amused as I am that he just compared liking Journey to liking vagina?

Nonsense. Staying true to the highest standards of a band is what the real fan does. Not blindly excusing every mediocre and shabby thing the band gets up to on its downward trajectory...

You are a fucking moron.    How can you possibly be so dense? That's like saying there are only students. No dedicated students, and no lazy students...they're all the same. If a student gets an "A" they're no different than a student that doesn't do homework and get's an "F". That's some real logic at work buddy.
