I know you talk to the band in utter disgust (personal personalities) but you can't deny you still adore and will always cherish the music, right? It'll be a shame for you to atleast NOT enjoy the music judging by how big of a hardcore fan you are/were. Do you ever regret being "in" with the band?

I will always like the Classic era and the music, but even that I couldn't listen to for about two years. I still don't spin any Journey, never. Just stained if you ask me. As for the music, it was definitely good for it's time, but the last four or so years the music sucks. Red 13 blew and Generations was even worse. As for Revelation...whatever, nothing memorable there. They sound so dated that if I want to hear Journey, I will spin Perry Journey, not some sound alike. They are so creatively bankrupt...you would think with their talent, they could come up with something to be relevent, but nope, nothing.

As for me regretting being "in" with the band? No way. It was fun as all Hell. I would do it differently if I had a chance to do it again that's for sure. For starters, the first thing I would do is whip the shit out of JT and his big fat white ass. I am serious, that guy was a walking heap of hot fresh dog shit. He was uglier than sin, and LOL, never got chicks, even though I witnessed first hand him trying to woo some skanks down in Tampa with passes...none of them bit on his bait. Secaondly, I would act much more mature next time around. I was out of control, dude. Did I ever tell you about the time at the Hollywood Bowl in LA, rummaging through Lippard's dressing room thieving all their Sam Adams? Funny now, but not cool then. I remember finding them, opening them on a the corner of some furniture, pounding it in one gulop, and getting another, repeat. :) I have no respect for those deceiving Euro hair plugged fags. If I ever see Elliot again, I am going to rip off Rick Allen's good arm and beat the shit out of him with it like a boat oar. I don't know how those guys are getting over on the paying public with their obvious bullshit. Poor Journey, busting their ass and getting no run, and Lippard is miming and faking their way through headlining shows...just ain't fair I guess.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know the perks paid off for touring and being a close knit friend with a H.O.F-esq band and that you lived out a dream only the small of percentages live out. I meant it more towards the fact that since you were so "in' with them that just incase things did break down and go wrong and if such things like a can of worms opened up to you within the personalities of the band members that you so admired, would come back and haunt you and simply ruin it for you in the long run to see such things taking place. I always said some things are left being unknown and your bad experience with Journey surely seemed to not only ruin the relationship personally with them, but the music as well. I guess that's the risk you took but judging by what you've seen and what you've done, man what a bucket list!

You know the 2001 concert dvd would have been a whole lot better if they'd had Augeri lipping to Perry's vocals!!

LOL, I have no idea if they knew who I was at the time. I just know Cain and Schon flew out to Charlotte on a week notice and we had a 3 hour dinner after that...the next 6 weeks were basically "you've got the job, come to CA and meet our people and let's play some music." I was never confident it was a done deal, because it seemed pretty surreal.

But something sure as hell happened between the time I was "offered" the job in CA to the time when Schon single handedly fucked my entire world up. I know that MR Journey forum was in an uproar because of JSS' ousting. Many of his fans blamed me, and there was plenty of unflattering stuff written about me during that time, plenty of old vids and pics being posted...hell, one person even thought I orchestrated Tape Gate to get Augeri fired then somehow got JSS fired as well so I could take his job. Schon was on the MR forums all the time. He was drinking pretty heavy that summer and still trying to handle some of the stress with his divorce from Amber. I don't know how much anything on MR had to do with his decision to put things on hold, but of course my involvement with Tapegate, even though I maintained impartiality during that time, always stuck in the back of my mind.

And then Nora had to post that clip of Arnel here and she fucked up my 3 years of devious plotting!! Curses...so close!

Actually it was funny that Arnel's "people" or "person" had been following all this, or it was an extreme coincidence, that in early June 2007 about the time JSS was let go, EVERY Frontiers video had a comment and link from him pointing people to Arnel's version of Faithfully, and we had maybe 50 videos or more. The YT video gained thousands of views every day, which was amazing unless you consider that this was before YouTube put new measures into effect in 2008 that prevented people from hacking views (it was easy back then, you just would embed your YT video on a page then set up a Firefox script to auto reload every 1:00 minute or so, and open about 10 tabs doing the same thing...instant play counts). Arnel wasn't the only one though, there were other tribute singers even sending me messages that I share my contact info with them so they could get a fair shot at an audition. Anyway, I say this only because Ive always felt good that I never chased down Journey when all this initially came about, Cain just happened to find me as I was doing my own thing in VA. All the PR spins in the world can't take that away, I guess....and I guess that kind of brings it back to that original comment about Tapegate and me.

That was and is still a bit strange don't you think?

Not strange at all. Welcome to the sound engineer's world of "Virtual Soundcheck". Basically you record the show and the next day in the new venue, you play the multitrack recording to fiddle about during soundcheck. No musicians seem to like soundchecks anyway. Read more here:

http://community.avid.com/blogs/avid/archive/2010/05/06/tom-petty-and-the-hbs-rehearsals-and-virtual-soundcheck-with-venue.aspx

Note how they even have cardboard cut-outs of the band to be able to set the lights without the band! :D

Rockindeano wrote:Elliot would "try" to sing, and all of a sudden, perfect toned high vocals just blasted out of a canon and covered fror poor Elliot.

Well, ok. That I can't explain with anything else than tapes. :D

I don't recall ever seeing this accusation but I don't doubt some Oliver Stone types might have put JSS behind the grassy knoll as he had been on the road with Journey hanging with Neal on the Generations tour...or perhaps it was the tour before that when they were working on getting Soul Sirkus off the ground.

I wish Andrew, Deano, and Jeremy could get together and write an article that says everything on what happened between the Tapegate incident, the JSS hiring/firing, and the period where the band decided to hire Arnie.

LOL....I'm afraid I can't quote verse and scripture at this point but it has been conveyed that at least one songwriter quit a partnership with Perry because he was expected to write the songs himself with Perry only contributing the theme and taking the credit. Of course he did completely write (or borrow depending on how you look at it) LTS by himself.

I think that article was in HIT PARADE magazine, I remember reading that story about 28 years ago. Amazing how it seems to come out differently now that Pery is no longer in the band. Revisionist history at work? Next year, we'll here how Arnel cam up with the lyrics while rolling up a doobie one night in Quezon City.

This is from the Time3 booklet:

THE PARTY'S OVER (HOPELESSLY IN LOVE)

S. Perry
From "Captured"

The only studio recording included in the double-record live album, this song was written backstage at Detroit's Cobo Hall by Perry on an electric bass and the band played the number at sound check. Keyboardist Tim Gorman subbed in the studio on keyboards for Rolie, who left the band at the end of the tour. The single version made #34 in Billboard.

DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'

S. Perry-N. Schon
From "Escape"

At the band's Oakland warehouse, this song bubbled out of a rehearsal. Schon developed the bass riff, the chugging guitar line and the sweeping chords on the chorus. Steve Smith built the song around a pattern featuring a lot of tom-toms, anchoring the number to a rich drum figure. Perry and Cain drew from their experiences with the Sunset Strip street scene for the lyrics, "streetlight people." A Journey songbook cornerstone, the second single from "Escape" hit #9 on the charts.

STONE IN LOVE

S. Perry-N. Schon-J. Cain
From "Escape"

During a party at his San Rafael house, Neal Schon started fooling around with his guitar and a tape recorder. When he listened back the next day, he found the beginning of a song which he titled, "Stone In Love." Perry and Cain polished it into this gem. "Jonathan Cain is such a great lyricist," said Perry, "he helped me go to another place as a writer."

I stumbled onto it with just a basic Google search. Look for it anyway because this looks unofficial to me. I have found a ton of typos. Like ...

The road took it's toll on the band member's home lives.

Starting off with a guitar line Schon played simultaneously through his amplifier and a keyboard synthesizer, the tune merely followed Schon's opening statement, according to Perry, who called the song his favorite "Raised On Radio." I'm assuming that should say "off or off of Raised On Radio."

Perry cut this number three times. "He was obsessed by that song," remembered Cain. "It was his pet song." Cain also the song his finest vocal performance. :?
