I agree, but am not sure what's in it for you, SJ. When Neal gets his way, fans end up with something like Hardline, Red 13, or SoulSirkus. That's fine by me, but don't you hate those albums?
EXACTLY. You can go too far into the syrupy ballad direction....and too far in the hard rock direction. The reason Escape is such a timeless masterpiece is they did NOT consider all that (for the most part) and just wrote good music. Nowadays, and it has been this way since TBF, all people want to do is count ballads vs. rock songs and label the album as such and such. But, if the songs are mediocre (Generations and Revelation), then it really doesn't matter how fast the beat is, or how mushy the lyrics are...it's not going to be memorable.
