Ritchie: James' voice more for pop and not rock? Maybe pop metal from the 80's. His voice would blend in with those bands, but not straight up pop music.

Depends what the criteria is. If you're adding up the totality of their careers and factor in things like longevity, touring strength and success over time, and also consistently staying relevant with new music, Tyler wins. If you want to go with vocal capabilities and success over an 8-10 year period, then Perry wins. Personally, I prefer Perry, but Tyler's overall career dwarfs Perry's. Perry was basically a very fragile 8-10 year flash in the pan. Aerosmith has been going strong for 40 years.

Ain't that the truth! Don pretty much commented on the same thing in another thread rescently. It's so true, attention spans of a gnat.Just don't care about "talent" as much anymore, it's all about the shockvalue or big production. No wonder classic rock bands sell so much better overseas.

Exactly its about whats the new popular thing right now. American music is fleeting. I remember Tina Turner saying that there is a huge difference between English and American fans. English fans stand by their music and bands, they dont ditch them 3 months down the road. They invest in the music, not the product or sex appeal. Bands have more staying power in Europe.

The cream of the crop American bands have legions of fans. Journey, REO, Styx, Bon Jovi, Skynyrd, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Metallica, Hall and Oates, KISS, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, The Eagles and many, many others have no problem touring, some 30-40 years since their inception. The European and Asian music scene was long starved and have just lowered the bar to include half-assed bands that never really made it here in the U.S. Mr Big is a fine example of a very mediocre band reaping the benefits of paying attention to the world markets, when the American crowd was bright enough to sniff out their obvious mediocrity. Right, Deb?

Why? because the rest of the world is smarter Dannyboy, they actually get talent and aren't fooled by the product or flash in the pan.

You're not comparing apples to apples. Mr Big and Justin Bieber aren't in the same genre or age demographic. The U.S. music scene, like it or not, is basically equivalent to the entire rest of the world. And this scene is fine. They've simply been able to, unlike other parts of the world, to decipher the great classic acts from the mediocre ones. And the great acts have no problem touring. Hell, Journey and Styx are able to do it without the voices that helped make them popular. That's loyalty and an A-OK music scene.
Besides, Bieber was joined on stage by the real Mr Big:![]()

Yeah, I know they added effects and such - when don't they these days. But despite what some say, the guy's got a voice. Again, listen to some of his pre-Idol stuff on YT. I think he sounded pretty good in his country duet tonight too.
For me he was a breath of fresh air on the show - the remaining 3 don't interest me at all. I think the country boy has been pegged to win for some time now- good for him, just not something I would ever listen to.
