Subject is my favorite, then the first one. Blood on the Bricks and Twitch are OK, but Nova's Dream is lame.

"Sausage Fingers" Malmsteen, who now weights in at a minimum of 275 pounds, is just a speed player. That's all he ever was and it's all he'll ever be. It's a JOKE to compare him to Neal. Hell, Neal is much better than his mentor, Carlos Santana.

I thought I was the only one who thought Neal turned out to be a better player than CS. Neal always seemed to be more willing to experiment than Santana...just one of the reasons I prefer listening to his playing over many others.

What's Malmsteen's weight got to do with anything? While it's true that most of what Malmsteen does is speed playing, he is able to play some wonderfully melodic passages. I just wish he would do it more often. I do agree that Neal is a much better player than Santana, though.

I give him a break on the overshreds since not only didn't JSS run over to soundmen going "TURN DOWN NEAL'S AMPS!!!" he actually genuflected when Neal soloed, like a real Journey frontman should. :)

Saw TOTO live the other night and sat very close to the stage. I can say that Luke deserves every bit of praise he receives and more. The guy is awesome and is also much more engaging of the crowd than Neal Schon.

Luke is unreal. Puts Neal to shame IMHO.

I agree...maybe not "to shame" but, Luke is better and talk about playing "appropriately" for a given song/genre...Luke is the man!

I love Luke but he's a distant second to Neal and no one plays what the song calls for better than Neal.

About Luke being better with the audience, he should be, he's Toto's front man, Kimble is not.

Uhhh...you would be wrong.

Yeah but you couldn't huh??

ABSOLUTELY I could be wrong...but on this one I'm not.

The truth is, I LOVE NS's playing...always have. Some things he does better than ANYONE else. It's just that, note-for-note, in my opinion, Luke is better. Probably the best indication of Luke's talent lies in the opinions of his peers. They all say he absolutely SMOKES on the instrument.

One additional thing I really like about Luke is his humble attitude about his playing. He never draws attention to himself...always gives the "other" guitar player the credit.

The man can FLAT OUT PLAY...ask anyone in "the know".

Out.

I thought it was the coolest thing ever on the Baltimore show DVD when JSS did that.

Yea, someone does it to Neal, though, for the first time in his career and he's an egomaniac.

My 2cents.

Neal is among the best. Neal does shred a little more than my liking these days, but he still kicks ass.

George Lynch is among the best (whoever said he sucked must have cought him on a very off night)

Yngwie is awesome. I have the concerto dvd. He does have some emotion in his playing but nowhere Neal back in the day.

Luke is among the best.

Neal is a much better player that Carlos Santana. Santana is a very good player, Neal is great.

Tony McAlpine - great guitar player. Even better piano player.

For discussion - how great of a player would Randy Rhodes be considered today if he hadn't passed away with such a slim catalog of music. I think - one of the greatest. His playing with Ozzy was so clean and fast. Such a shame.

I second this...and Deano's comments too. It seems to me that the totally legitimate and understandable 'protest' against Journey is getting ridiculous and infantile now...and is fast losing any credibility.[/quote]

Matthew, you and I usually don't agree much when it comes to all things Journey, but I definately agree with you comment here.r

Love Whitesnake too, even the stuff from way back like "Would I lie to you", "Ain't No Love....In the heart of the City", "Bloody Mary" etc. Great straight forward Rock music.

Dave, That video is just hilarious  Its been a while since i since it last, but still funny as hell....
And as you said what does one's weight have to do with playing guitar... if thats the case, shouldnt one's height be considered too?;)
Besides, Yngwie has lost tons of weight the past year,,, he quit drinking, smoking, and he is working out and playing tennis alot.

Matthew, nothing wrong with Whitesnake buddy,.,, theyve had many solid songs,,,, besides Coverdale, they had 2 other amazing
musicians playing with them , Steve Vai and Marco Mendoza.....

guitar playing is subjectional,, classical , jazz, rock , metal ,, all have their heroes..

Segovia , i gaurantee, would hate everyone mentioned on this thread, he is the master guitar player of the 20th century, UNTOUCHABLE classical acoustic! . ..but i would bet big money that he never plugged into a 100 watt marshall stack with a les paul custom and played with a band.. and felt the amp volume and the back of his leg..

if you want to hear the greatness of Neal Schon , this last tour,, listen to a boot of Still They Ride... if your driving in your car be careful!!

I agree with you 100%!!! I've seen him live 5 times with Journey, and one time with Hardline and I've NEVER heard him hit a bad note! A lot of the great guitarists out there sound great on the album, but play totally different riffs live. Sometimes they do it to change things up a bit, but it's usually because they don't remember what the hell they played on the cd! I'm amazed that this man (who's been playing longer than I've been alive) can get up there time after time, and bust out those solos that close to the original recordings! Regardless of what you think of him personally, nobody can take away the kick-ass tunes and riffs he's given us over the years!!! JMHO.

Seen them live?

I need to upload my videos from the show I was at. I'm pretty sure I caught Luke's solo. It was fucking amazing. For the record, I'm the person who often gets bored when all the players do their solos.

I have. Three times in the past six months, in concert and at a festival, and I have to agree with earlier posters. Luke is a fine guitarist but his solos are not that memorable IMO. That's partly probably because he improvises more but it then tends to ramble and get messy. Neal's solos on the other hand (with the exception of his 'national anthem' indulgences) tend to stick within the confines of the song and thus are more identifiable with the song.
