5 best guitarists

True about country. Ever watch Ricky Skaggs or Steve Wariner? Or that guy from Shawn Colvin's band that toured with the Eagles (don't know his name). Speaking of Eagles, I always thought that Don Felder was a really great player too.

The thing with Leppard's guitarists they are not the pioneers or virtuosos that some listed are, but the way they work together and the albums they put out... I'm not a guitarist of course so my opinion comes from a different place than you guys - I hear it differently.

If so, you evidently haven't seen Edward on the current tour.

But it doesn't matter if time has passed anyone by.....all that matters is how good they were at their peak.

Players a lot better and smarter than me have stated that Schon was one of the few speedie shredmeisters of the 70's. Hey, I absolutley love EVH and I am currently learning some his stuff note-for-note...or at least trying I should say. I am even scrapping up enough bucks to buy his new amplifier, the 5150 III. But most rock/pop guitarists from the seventies NEVER had the chops of guys like Gilbert, MacApline, etc. even at their peak. Al DiMeola is the exception, but he is more jazz, although he did inspire Vinnie Moore to greatness (The Casino album in particular). A lot of guys from the 60's and 70's wrote some great guitar music, but I separate that when I am discussing chops. EVH wrote THE BEST licks for sure, but after Yngwie the bar was raised, much to our benefit, and all you have to do is check out the history of the Varney label to see that there was sea-change in the 80's. Some of the note for note transcriptons I have seen from guys like Paul Gilbert are just insane. And the alternate picking skills of Rusty Cooley are other worldly, and he does write some cool licks and runs as well. Ten years from now there will be even better guitarists. I think that is a good thing.

Yes, and I had the pleasure of seeing him live on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and I'm seeing him again tonight and on Sunday. He doesn't get much chance to shine on record, but live he is simply stunning. He doesn't go for the traditional guitar solos, but instead ekes out chords and notes you wouldn't think possible from a guitar.

Can't wait for later tonight.

Jimmy Page ( I saw him live many times and believe me the dude can play, I'll be at the reunion show)

Alex Lifeson (and Alex would not mind me putting him right behind him and after 11 shows this tour with 3 more to go the end of this month the man is like a fine wine he gets better with age)

Edward Van Halen (after over 100 live shows of VH Eddie's solo's are a non-contact sexual experiance to say the least! Van Halen at the Garden will be the 50th Birthday present I give myself this year they play the 13th I turn 50 the 14th)

Peter Townshend (he was such an inovator of some major riffs that we all copy today)

Wally Bryson (one of the best power pop guitarists of the 70's I'm looking forward to being at the Raspberries reunion concert at the Highland Ballromm in NYC tomorrow night 10/13)

Walter Stocker (The Babys lead guitarist overshadowed by the fact that this band hit it's stride during the disco sucks era, had it been a different time people would have noticed)

I know you said five but I can't narrow it down to any less!!!!!!
