alot like be good to yourself, but i am having a bit of trouble, Arnel's diction is still a bit rough to me, maybe it is just me. but all in all, not a bad song.

Huge Schon fan here but this song is pretty average for Neal.

Honestly, what Journey song isn't AVERAGE for his abilities. How many times has he taken a break from Journey to go ROCK!!!! It's typical Journey. I like it. I loved Believe In Me too.....Sorry Jeff!! Think your music was taken and the vx were changed and mixed up a bit?

My first reaction was that it sounded like Generations...much like Never Too Late: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6fRpKOvGAwg

It's good but not "knock my socks off" good. I can't imagine it will get much radio play. I do like the ballad, "After all these Years" and would probably buy that (just not the package - still not happy with the decision to re-record the hits).

4 more listens to this in the comfort of home now with the luxury of blasting it loud and I'm a huge fan of the song.

Rythm guitars are great very classic Neal, subtle keys, good hooky verse singing with Pineda
sounding like perry w/ a dash of Chalfont and Deen
"I love almost everybody."---Rocky Balboa 1990
"Let's reform this thing.Let's go out and get some guys who want to work and go do it"--Neal Schon February, 2001

I too gave it about 4 listens. I can't see listening anymore. Maybe when a higher quality version comes out to see if that is the problem. Outside of the Deen songs, I only listened to Generations maybe twice, if that.

Uh, then call me a fucking liar. What I am shocked at is how any long-time or "deep" fan can actually get excited about this. What's to get excited about? I hope the rest of the CD is better.

Was anyone "surprised" by this? I remember hearing Who's Cryin' Now (a first single), or Separate Ways (a first single), or Be Good To Yourself (a first single) and thinking wow, they really are stretching here. Or at least not offering up the same formula. With this, and Generations, and arrival, it's like "oh yea - there's that old Journey formula". So what. I guess if I wanted that type of growth, I'd listen to Kiss.

If you mind me asking.. what EXACTLY were you looking for? What did you expect this sound to sound like?

With the crucial 2 members that were the core of this sound for 30+ years still there..what MORE can you ask from them regarding something that "surprises" you? Honestly, I don't think a band like Journey in this modern era can upstart a fan base to be "Excited" again, after what their track record indicates. Obviously given that some people take this shit too serious..how could a "deep" fan that wasn't satisfied since 1980..be satisfied EVER with the new material?

I look at it like this. This band was close to dying many...many many many times, and I am fortunate enough to crack in on the good times and celebrate one of the best melodicrock bands that ever lived...while I can. What is sitting around bitching about "It sounds too much like Journey" going to do you any good? Just sit back, enjoy the new music that we all have been calling for, and rock it.

Well, you had said if I wasn't knotting my head and all that - that I was a liar. I guess I'm disappointed that Jon and Neal have basically thrown in the towel on their artistic drive. I'm spoiled by Marillion though, to be honest. Each album is meant to top the last. Hit or miss, you appreciate the effort. If Jon and Neal are going to write and play in their sleep, then I suppose I could listen in my sleep.

Hearing this song, can you honestly say you were not aware of every hook and turn it was going to make, long before it happened?

In the heyday, being a Journey fan had a pride to it. We could be proud of the efforts of the band. We could be proud that each album grew from the last. I honestly think Steve Perry had far more to do with that than anyone gives him credit for. He may have fought and made enemies for the fight, but I know we got better music from it.

So I guess I am not really looking for much. And that IS the problem. With JSS, I was truly looking forward something different, exciting. His firing proved to me once and for all that this band does not care in the least about creating anything new. So why even record something?

As a fan - as someone that defended this band for years - it's a sad decline, not the good times.

Well....something surprising would have been nice, but it's Journey and I love when they are themselves. Still, I hope the cd will take some chances and do some magic. Not trying to say that it isn't good, it's good. But I was hoping for more...I know they have it in them!!!!

I pretty much agree with everything you said. Still looking forward to the new album though, as new Journey of any kind beats no Journey at all.

If this album is anything different from any other album in the past I'll be happy. But if my suspicions of it being Arrival Pt. 2 come to be true I'll be very disappointed. Generations, love it or hate it was a VAST difference from the Arrival record, which was far different from TBF, and so on for every album beforehand.

Kudos on the Marillion too. They're gradually becoming one of my favorites and I've only listened to one post-Fish album.

I have to disagree. I do not see those as vast differences (at least not in a good way).

Here is my theory. And with each new thing I hear, I am more convinced. I think the band saw their "comeback" chances with TBF. The Grammy nomination only solidified that. So Steve Perry gets hurt and they feel it was a lost opportunity. Not saying I blame them for feeling that way, though I think t was more fault-less than anything else. I think since the day they decided to move forward, they are trying to capture what they feel was lost. It's almost desperate how much they want to duplicate effort. You can almost go song for song on Arrival and find a near match on TBF (as far as attempt - not execution). Generations was a mess. And the first few songs I have heard off this disc are the same. Well, it's over ten years on and it ain't gonna happen. Not this way.

The other thing I think they are trying to do is write a song familiar enough that people won't go to the bathroom while it's being played live.

Journey needs to find a cutting edge producer that is going to kick their ass or walk if they don't take it up a notch. They need to stop relying on their own instincts. They could have really created something special with JSS. When they came out and said they needed to honor or protect their legacy, I just threw my arms up. How about if you are going to stay together - actually continue creating a legacy instead of leaning on the old one.

How many times do you think Augeri or Pineda fought with Jon and Neal over creative issues? Likely never. They are too timid. I suspect this is why JSS is not there any longer. Too bad. Arnel can sing, but really, does he have what it takes to make Journey exciting again?

I agree with a lot of that, but I do think that Generations and Red 13 were a bit of an attempt at a step in a different direction. You can hear the "Soul SirkUS Sound" all over these two releases, and that's from the period where Neal released his harder solo album "I on U" and I think maybe Neal was REALLY wanting to rock it out a bit, but met some resistance from the band creatively (Cain) and physically (Augeri losing his voice).

After the JSS experiment failed and the lack of success/attention for SS it seemed like Neal gave up his ambitions to take Journey in a different sonic direction, and now he's embracing the "legacy sound" that makes Cain's knickers slip off, and resigned to the formula.

It's sad, Neal doesn't even have the excuse of using a side project to channel his other creative ambitions now like he did in the past. Maybe the guys' wells have finally ran dry?

That was an intriguing and well posted reply. I understand where you are coming from. You grew up with them throughout your life and like you said...expect them to grow and grow and expect better each album that was put out in their 'heyday.'

The problem is that was their PRIME when they were releasing hit albums after albums. They will never be able to produce something that special ever again..esp like you said with the way Perry had an influence on the lyrics and song writing alone. That's 3 powerful minds rolled up into one.

After Perry, they DID apply a different sound to their music.. Arrival was more in between of new and old, but Generations I felt was a WHOLE NEW OUTLOOK on their sound all around. They had a kind of a hard western feel, mixed in with melodic mixed in with soul...and the rock songs were over the top..ROCK SONGS. We all know how that went..Generations selling 10 copies in stores and the wrest giveouts!

I think they had no choice but to go back in that 80's rock direction, at least get back some of the integrity of their sound. Jumping the gun on one song is a little bit unfair. After we give the WHOLE cd a listen, I'm sure both of our views might change for better or for worse. Yet to be seen. I like where this is headed, and can't wait for June 3rd.

I like it. I may grow to like it more later.

Hell, everyone knows how much I loathe OA and LTS yet I still throw those ones on from time to time and let it rip.

Just because I feel that they are creatively backtracking doesn't mean I don't like the music. Formulaic it may be, it's still a formula that highly appeals to me. I love listening to soaring melodic guitars, incredible vocals, and catchy hooks. Maybe I've just set my expectations too high, 'tis all.
