Reading between some lines and adding some speculation:
I bet at the wind-down of the last tour, INXS was thinking about hanging it up. They had a great run with Switch, got their name out there again, made a little money. But they were dropped from their American label, the original band memebers are getting on in age...I think they may have implied to JD that they were going to retire.
JD says he really started abusing the coke when he "knew it was all going to come to a screeching halt" which must have been during the last tour (i.e. they told him they may retire). So the members take a break, JD receives little or no communication from them...he is already blowing through any money that he made on tour. Finally, after two years with little or no communication, he feels he's been sacked or that INXS is no more. Meanwhile, INXS decides to record another cd on their own label and not hang it up. Without knowing this, JD gives the interview on tv.
Sounds like poor communication between all parties. But its not fatal...think of all the bad things that Roth and Hagar have said about VH but each got back together and toured with them eventually.
