I think this is a case of the emperors new clothes. Everybody says its great cos it has to be great considering who is involved. There is not one track on that Cd that come close to Top of the World.

Think about it... Satch has his crowd of fans from the Satriani projects... Sammy has his from the Montrose/Sammy Hagar/Van Halen projects.... Mike has his from the Van Halen projects... and Chad has his from the Chili Pepper's projects. It reminds me of the Damn Yankees... lots of star power but no real big hit songs.

"Coming of Age" and "High Enough" were big hits, no?

I guess they were... my bad... but these guys are no Damn Yankees. Maybe 20 years ago they could have been. That was probably not a good comparison.

There's a lot of great songs on the album, I think "Oh Yeah" will continue to be a successful single for them. "Soap on a Rope" or "Get It Up" would be solid choices for a second single. I think it may even become a Gold album before the year is up.

On an Andrew scale, I'd give the album an 85%. Expectations might have been a bit too high for the album, given the "supergroup" name.

Asia set the bar for supergroup album debuts, This falls a little short of that mark.

I'm just saying that without new hit music, these older 80's bands have to rely on their hits to put on a concert that will draw huge crowds. I wouldn't see Styx, Journey, REO, or any other 80's band based on their latest record alone without playing their older hits too. But that is what Sammy is doing with this project. Without the older stuff mixed in, I see this project as just a passing fad like many of the fly-by-night high profile side projects like HSAS and others.

You said this in the first paragraph of your review:

Of course since the band is a ’supergroup’, expectations were set very high for their debut album - and rightfully so. Bands like Asia, Bad English, and Damn Yankees have set the bar for debut albums in this department, and upon the first listen to Chickenfoot it’s clear that the standard is achieved - and then some.

Sorry, but I couldn't read any further than that. I didn't hear anything on this album that would make me think it has a hit song on it. I have no idea what you were hearing, but it must have been something different than what I heard.

Agreed, there's nothing spectacular at all on this cd. It's no where near the 3 bands mentioned above and there debut albums.

I gave it a listen when it first came out and thought it was extremely mediocre. I'm even less impressed now. It really isn't all that good. You'll have fans of each of the members' bands that will always flock to see them so they do have a built-in fanbase, but outside of that I don't see anyone with a decent listening ear giving a shit about them. They remind me of Soul Sirkus. A giant jam session with incredible musicians but with minimal chemistry and horrible lyrics.

Reading this, I'm thinking back to when Asia debuted. The Bad English, and Damn Yankees debuts were not even half as big as Asia's. Chickenfoot is not even on the same planet.
I guess you would have had to have been there to see it but Asia' debut was a monster, in no small part because of MTV. J.J. Jackson, Mark Goodman and Nina Blackwood pimped their album 24/7. Artists just can't get that kind of publicity anymore.

ASIA benefited 'cause it was a transitional time in music. Disco was petering out. New wave and new rock were getting their chance at bat.

1982 was also pretty weak musically so Asia's album good as it was (and is) had less competition. Escape and HiInfidelity had been out awhile and Frontiers was a year off so there wasn't a lot to compete with.

'83 changed all that. 90125, Frontiers, U2, Big Country, etc.,

Chickenfoot has a couple decent tracks. Not enough hooks in the rest. I use it for workout music. Good for background.

I agree that TOTR is better than anything on the CF album. HSAS's a hell of a cd.

What is it with these guys and crappy band names. HSAS and ChickenFoot?

Amazingly the new Chickenfoot album at #2 this week on the Billboard Top Rock Albums:

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/c ... ock+Albums

More power to them, I hope it sells off the shelf. I'm a huge fan of all the artists on the album. It just sounds kinda tired to me. I'd rather hear them all play their hits while touring for the new album... and of course it would be okay to seed a *few* of the new songs in here and there... just not a whole night of the new stuff exclusively. That would bore the shit out of me.

Those of you talking of "hits" ?? Are you serious? There will be no "hits" on this album. Those days are long gone. That doesn't mean that the thing doesn't jam like crazy. Are they the best tunes these guys have ever done? Not by a long shot- but who gives a crap? A REAL honest to God ROCK AND ROLL album is actually SELLING! And it ain't a bunch of whiny 20 somethings, it's a band of full grown men! How can this NOT be cause for us all to celebrate?

I also would have a hard time going to see them in concert if they are not playing any classic Sammy Hagar or Van Halen songs.

They have done the night show/talk show circuit just like Journey did before their tour last year. I really think that gets people interested and more likely to buy a new album. Those shows get a lot of viewers and sparks interest for people who would never even know new music existed, since they don't read a message board everyday like we all do.
