Sorry, but that's just not fair or valid. The band in no way has to completely pack away songs they helped co-create because their recluse singer has decided to call it a career. I don't recall the Journey fans not really interested in seeing Steve Perry on the FTLOSM tour (and there were many that didn't go, hence the non sellouts at 2,500 seat venues)screaming that Perry was a tribute act or that his band shouldn't be playing the music of Neal, Jon, Ross and Smitty. Asking Steve to sing "a capella" is just as ridiculous as asking Journey not to sing songs that Perry originally sang. Both arguments are dumb, but Journey has tried over and over to convince Steve to rejoin and has never once tried touring without him while he was in the band...something he did to them. And then he came back to thwart their new lineup...and fucked them again. Classy guy.

Well good for you for twisting a statement to turn it into an opportunity to post your agenda. The point was made in my original post. And it has nothing to do with what you posted. Sorry you can't focus enough to figure out what that would be. But it hasn't changed.

Bullshit, asshole. This is what you said: "Take any of those 13 years, subtract every song that Steve MF'n Perry was the original singer on."

So fucking what??? The same could be said when Perry was touring playing Journey songs. Someone could have opened their blow hole like you did and spouted the equally stupid "Take Perry's setlist from this tour and subtract every song that Neal motherfucking Schon, Ross motherfucking Valory, Steve motherfucking Smith and Jonathan motherfucking Cain played on..." Seems to me that Perry had to replicate more "intruments" than Journey is now. And the fans seem to be flocking to see Journey much more so than they did Perry. Advantage, Journey.

Dan take away the DD for a month and lets see how many of the current "fans" would have shown up....you need to think about that...it's the songs that were made famous by the voice of Journey (Perry) that people want to hear and they want as close as the original as you can get if they can't have Perry...for me I would rather not have it at all but that is my and some other peoples choice....if they played lets say seven songs off of Revelation then people would boo and leave...so does that not make Journey kind of a tribute band???

Now go ahead a call me names and try to make me look foolish....but the above is true and if it were not than Revelation would be being played all over the radio..not Journey with Perry at the helm and Oh Sherrie and Foolish Heart..its just a fact and well to me that makes it advantage Perry...and look I did not call you an asshole once

Why? That's a ridiculous request. Why do you feel the need to handcuff the band and take away part of their catalog? Why can't you get it through your head that they are playing THEIR songs on tour? Not Perry's songs. The songs are written by Journey. Not by Steve Perry. It's not Neal and Jonathan's fault that Perry doesn't want to get off his ass and sing them.

Enjoy living in 1983. You should try joining us here in 2009. It's not so bad.

That's fucking stupid. I'm sorry. The musicians Perry filled his "band" with to play Journey songs on his solo tours didn't make him a tribute band? It's pathetic to say that Schon, Cain, Valory, Castronovo and Pineda are a tribute band to Journey. Two founding members and a 28-year member. Give me a fucking break.

Advantage to the guy who hasn't done a damn thing musically since 1996, except sit around and "think" about recording and touring again? Not advantage to the BAND that has worked its ass off to play these timeless songs for fans young and old for the past 11 years? Playing in front of millions of fans, recording albums, DVDs, appearing on TV...

Yeah, advantage to the hermit.

Every single one of your replies is so spot on. Kudos. And fine with people that just lost interest without Perry and stay home and listen to their CDs, but Portland's obsession with them post Perry and happiness and glee at every negative post about them on here and total inability to give one compliment to them or accept the success Journey is having bogles my mind. How I still like Portland sometimes is beyond me.

Time to reach into the archives. Every time this same argument resurfaces, I'm going to bring out this same ole post:

Hypothetical situation: You & your high school sweetheart marry shortly after graduation. You are unemployed. Your wife works two jobs: one as a waitress & the other as a secretary so that you can go to school. Several years later you get your PhD. You land a great job, make lots of money, purchase a beautiful home & then your wife decides to leave you. You wait several years, but she doesn’t return. Eventually, you move on. You get remarried. Tell me, how long should you owe your first wife for the success you wouldn’t have achieved if it hadn’t been for her?

No they didn't tour without him just moved on to the next when he was unable to tour. Wish he had thought more of a solo career or touring without them sooner before encountering problems with his voice, but of course he was very upset with Neal and the others doing solo project for he thought it would be disruptive to the band, but Neal and the rest did them anyway and left him no choice but to venture out and do likewise. When Street Talk did well, maybe he said WoW! maybe no more torturing vocals with 100 + shows, huh? Then he went back and $ signs flashed in eyes thus not wanting to give him time to decide on surgery or other avenues. But hey, he'd given them several years over 600 shows - real dedicated and classy guy.

Shove it...

If you spread 'em I'll shove it.

Tons!

Two of the biggest surprises for me were Still They Ride and Open Arms.

Both. :)

I actually prefer both takes to the original versions. Neal's solo on Open Arms is perhaps the highlight... but Arnel's version is more masculine and adds some grit to the tenor. Same for Deen. His impromptu "through the night!" during the beginning of Neal's solo is excellent.
