I'm a numbers guy, and working for Warner years ago, I have friends who are pretty competent in the areas of accounting and reimbursements, etc. It's fun to drink some beers, play the financial adviser game and pretty much spin the wool when we see where artists have licensed their music to huge effect.

The permissions given for song usage need to be unanimous, no one co-writer can grant it with out the others consent. Schon and Perry both have indicated they are pleased with the success that this has created in terms of Journey's music being recognized. They could have taken the Bryan Adams route and said no but they didn't.
As it's their music and they agreed to it unanimously, that's all that really matters. Second only to granting the Sopranos license, this is the greatest decision Perry, Schon and Cain have made in the last ten years. Not only are they being bombarded with licensing requests for their music, which isn't constrained by copyright royalty rates and range in the tens of thousands of dollars per license, they also will get paid when these shows go in to syndication, are released on DVD, etc. For the the three primary songwriters of Journey, this is a financial renaissance beyond anything they could have imagined compared to the relevance of their back catalog a decade ago. Money DOES make the world go around and these three guys are definitely enjoying that midnight train ride right now.
Funny how they can still maintain enough of a partnership through these licensing agreements. The success of these legacy tunes will always legitimize Perry as a silent partner within the Journey corporation, regardless of how estranged the relationship between Steve and Neal appears.

Then they all suck too!

Spending more time in the Pink Floyd universe. Besides tracks from Dream After Dream showing up on my random music playlist, I've pretty much moved on to different music at the moment. The intense saturation of DSB has made me step back and pursue my interest in other classic rock material that is still sailing under the re-emergence radar. When samples come out for the new album, I'll probably engage a bit more but it's become a bit like a dog chasing his tail (with a ribbon tied to it marked 1981) in Journey Land right now.
I'll just downshift for awhile.

I am happy to see the older material getting out there and extremely happy to see that Perry's affiliation with Glee has got him press and helps reinforce the fact that he was a major contributor to Journey's success, regardless of who is in the group at the moment.

Pick yourself up a bag of hash in South Central or a rock or two of blow. Works better under the influence.

Because some don't like your show, you're falling all over YOURSELFS (it's "yourselves", btw), and slinging insults at those who don't agree with you. Kind of the kettle calling the pot black there... I never slammed anybody, just don't dig the show. Big deal.

The thread's a discussion of said show. The show is for kids script-wise. I could care less about it and I do not watch it much. I DO take exception to the fact that autotune is way overused on the show and they're getting rich off it and basically a show about singers is embracing that. I hate that stuff and just hate to see it thriving in the music business, especially in a show about choirs. If I was a sportsfreak, I'd be bent out of shape about the use of performance enhancing in sports. Glee is closer to what I'm passionate about, so those performance enhancers bug me more than a bit. However, it's a STORY ABOUT SINGERS so, that puts that into a bit of perspective.

Yeah, yer right the gal wasn't in Wicked. My bad. I had heard she was. Yes, voices do crack and it's part of being live. And whether the Glee stars can sing on pitch, guess we'll never know...

Whatever- If I don't like the show, I won't watch it (already don't), but I can certainly comment on why I don't like it.

"The Show is for kids script-wise"--That misinformation negates everything else you claim and proves you haven't watched it. Do what you like, but stop making prouncements that make absolutley no sense. No one cares if you like it or not, just that you want to put others down who do like it.

It's for 15 year old girls, plain and simple. That's fine. I don't have to like it. Yes, I've watched it. My kids love it. I think it's terrible as a show, other than the Cheerleader coach who is totally hilarious. Dang, yer sure defensive about this show...

NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I'm defensive about misconceptions and exaggerations. That's all. The layers of that show are quite evident and it's meant for anyone who loves music and more than anything it's about the arts in school and how important they are and adults make those decisions, not kids.

Uh-oh! Rachel Berry's got a new rival on "Glee."

Charice will recur next season on the dramedy, a show rep says.

The 18-year-old international singing star will play a foreign exchange student with vocal chops that will give Rachel (Lea Michele) some serious competition, according to Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news.

Charice rose to fame on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" after a video of her performing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" went viral on YouTube when she was 16. She released her self-titled debut album in May.

Great for Charice. I don't know if she can ever reach the same recognition that Lea Salonga did with her Broadway and Disney career but it's nice to see this little girl getting her shot.
Great job by David Foster of having her debut album focusing on original material (for the most part) instead of a bunch of covers (which might have been very tempting as that is how she was discovered). Letting her build her brand awareness right out of the gate with new songs and a self titled Album was a good start.

I think the Journey run is over. #1 Album, songs hitting the charts in the UK, Really, Its at it's Zenith. With no tour, it will probably have one more run if the series is reran this summer. I understand what Lefsetz was saying, this kind of free publicity doesn't happen all the time and WILL end, so why is the band not out there taking advantage of it? I understand Azoff also though. Overexposure might hurt the band in the long run (But if what Glee is doing isn't overexposure, I don't know what is).
You know some other music act is just waiting to step up to be featured though, Def Leppard, Foreigner, who knows? I do think Journey and Glee have reached their endpoint though.

At least Journey purists (is there such a thing?) can finally relax about the song usage.

This is pretty good. DSB was good once...but Faithfully is terrible. I really need a little lower voice for it.

Driving home today I was listening to "Top 20 on 20" on my XM, and the Glee version of DSB played. A few hours earlier I was in Arby's and the original version came on their radio. It happens often when I'm with my son. He's a Journey fan, but it kills him when I get excited to hear them in public (and it happens a LOT). 8)

Was surprised to hear the Glee version (or any version) on that station though. They usually play Lady GaGa, Shinedown and Miley Cyrus over and over... and over and over... and over and over...
