Trying to equate 80 million sales over a 30 year period with 80 million individual fans world wide doesn't compute. That's like saying saying 1.76 million people bought Revelation when we know it was 880,000.

Still waiting on that 2X platinum certification from the RIAA. Probably on the eve of their next album launch. Also, Multi-platinum sounds much better than 2X platinum.
Ask Perry what he prefers to hear when they are talking sales of Street Talk. Multi platinum gives you free range for others to interpret your sales numbers up until Diamond status (10X platinum), definitely the better term for marketing purposes.

I'm gonna say (we will never know) that if Dunbar, Gregg Rolie, Cain, Perry and Schon would have been together, that lineup would have been better and possibly more rock oriented. I know they would have not gotten along but it's a stronger backing vocals team with Rolie.

No lineup got along with Perry in it. All others have.

Well, as much as i hate to say this, if Perry would have never been asked to join Journey, Neal and Journey would have been just another band in the 80's. Thats pretty easy to assume due to the fact their hasn't and never will be a vocalist that could turn or make a jaw drop like PERRY did. You add Neal, Cain and the rest and it all combines for a legendary lineup for the ages. Neal and Perry were more than great together, they were from THE MUSIC LAND IN OUTER SPACE. No one can take that away.

Sure there were lots of singers out there who could turn or make a jaw drop like Perry did and there will always be someone that comes along just as good and perhaps even better. SP was hella great in his time I give you that, I just can't see SP ever being the best, greatest, etc. forevermore. Remember, there will always be someone who comes along eventually who is better.

With Perry, it was more than the voice though. As Cain said time and time again, it was the ability of the two of them to take a simple phrase like Don't Stop Believin' and work it into a melody. Sure there are a lot of great singers but if you can't write, if you can't compose then what do you have? Journey didn't rely on outside writers, they created their own catalog (and thus enjoy the benefits of being able to control how their music is used and capture the royalties for it).

Pineda is no different than Augeri that until he creates his own timeless masterpiece, it will be the other singer collecting the checks, deciding who can and can't feature certain songs in films and so on.
All this hoopla about Glee and the current singer isn't even in the picture, a basic nonentity because he wasn't part of the creation process that made the band famous. Sure he has a great voice but he's a yeoman, sent out to act his part with a script all ready written for him.

AP might eventually have his moment, his own piece of Journey history but it will have to come from himself, not the leftovers of some other person's success.

I think the only "reunion" that could happen is the kind that serves fried chicken, potato salad, apple pie and ice tea.

Anything beyond that is not possible. Perry will never be capable of singing the Journey catalog again. Period. I wish he could, but I don't think he can. Cherish what he did and move on.

That's right, it was the OLD singer of Journey because the only music the Younger fans know is the music the OLD Journey made famous. Revelation is such a great album, huh? How may songs do we hear playing on the radio from that album today? What album just had a nice run on the UK charts, which album is tearing the Dutch charts right now?
Is it the NEW Journey causing all this excitement? Ahh, no. Journey's new singer is about to get down to some serious Karaoke action on his own while the band members all do their own thing. Meanwhile the younger generation can continue to get down to some Old Journey since the NEW Journey didn't see fit to make their new album available on iTunes, the place where the younger generation gets its music. So what do the kids do? They download the Sony stuff which has the OLD Journey on it. These kids don't even know what the new singer's name is, all they know is he looks Asian and sounds like the OLD singer which is what they want since that is the guy who's voice they are hearing on TV and in all the movie soundtracks.
As long as all the Journey singers sound like the guy who Neal said "Brought all the success to the band" all will be right with the world. If you can't create then imitate and that is exactly what the NEW Journey singer is being paid to do.

Sony is loving it. The band left them but the dollars keep rolling in.

If the "Classic Rock" or any Rock Station would play the new music, it might be a different story. Its been a problem since Arrival. The Radio argument doesn't work. iTunes I agree with.

I'm not highlighting Radio play as difference maker, more to point out there isn't really a NEW Journey, just the old Journey with replacement singers. The classics are what define this band. There are no two eras like with Van Halen where you have Diamond Dave and then you have Van Hagar. Both singers having their own stable of VH songs played on the radio, not to mention their own solo efforts as well.

I'm not sure how we even came to this discussion in this thread. Disney probably was just seeking permission to use an older Journey song so they had to contact representatives for the songwriters. If you remember, the original song was bumped to the end credits. It's not like Journey's contribution to the original soundtrack was anything to write home about. Definitely not anything significant enough for them to ask the band to reunite for a follow up effort.

Actually that's not true. It was heard in the arcade scene, I think the characters were in an office above the arcade and you could faintly hear the song through the walls/floor.

Funny how, in Armageddon, Journey got bumped FROM the end credits to a stupid 8 second (or less) portion of the movie...

I'm sure you're right but I thought it was attached to the end credits also. Maybe just the DVD or the Special edition? Anyway, it's been awhile so I'll watch it again this weekend.

It may have played on the end credis, I was merely addressing the "bumped from" part. I DO remember it being prominantly noted in the end credits that there was new music from Journey in the movie. They even used Journey's Logo.

I was disappointed after I watched the movie on dvd ...seemed like it would be a good movie. But the story is pretty boring...much too long, as I recall. It's been awhile for me also, but I believe the Journey song was inserted in the middle (muted, like J28 said), then played in its entirety with the final credits, as Don(GB) said.

Then, there's the OS video, with movie excerpts, which had prompted me to search out the dvd in the first place. I really liked the 2 male lead actors (Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner), but the movie turned out to be ho-hum. Maybe the sequel will be more exciting.

Fully agree, that's one of the biggest reasons I do not have any of the classic material on my ipod or computer from the Revelation album.

I don't think the new trend of "FANS", as it's being called really justifies what Journey is really about! Arnel is a great vocalist but none of the previous singers have made the impact that the Old Journey has made. I personally think that the new listeners do not actually buy the albums but rather use Itunes or other online sources to get music. Which there's really nothing wrong with it, but they are NOT what I like to call TRUE FANS, who bleed sweat and spend their hard earned cash to support the band no matter what. Most of these fans don't like Arnel, and Neal Schon needs to pull the scarub out of his ass and realize that!! :)

more like most fans don't care who is singing as long as it sounds like Journey. It's an evening to get drunk and listen to music with family and friends and forget about the pressures of life for a few hours. It's nostalgia plain and simple. If it's Augeri/Arnel/etc, it's cheaper nostalgia. If it's Perry, it's more expensive nostalgia. Nothing more, nothing less. Pretty good way to make a living either way though from a money aspect, which is the driving force for virtually every band out there--Journey included.

hardly any more than the Frontiers lineup with Cain and Smith covering Rolie and Dunbar's parts on Lights and Wheel in the Sky.......not to mention the 3-person lineup of the Raised on Radio tour. I'd be very tempted to say the Perry FTLOSM band was for the most part, a very average Journey cover band backed by a very good ex-Journey singer, since about 85% of the setlist was Journey material. Doesn't mean any of this is true.

The singer is certainly the most visible part, but not necessarily the most important.

I understand your point....I think being the most visible part in the band makes that one position in any band the hardest to replace...due to the phrasing and vocal ability.

Journey has a disadvantage from the get go...the "voice" was and still is very hard to replace....IMHO.

for Journey, yes. Journey's songs were primarily based on vocal melody. For other bands, like Van Halen for example, the songs were written around the guitar. For Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen would be much harder to replace than a singer. Either way, singers are very hard to replace as most people hear the singer first--and often, only.

portland wrote:Journey has a disadvantage from the get go...the "voice" was and still is very hard to replace....IMHO.

True. I still think it may have been possible circa ROR. I'm not aware of any band who has successfully replaced the main singer after a large hiatus and well away from their main success days. Perry would be very hard to replace regardless.

If it's Augeri/Arnel/etc, it's cheaper nostalgia. If it's Perry, it's more expensive nostalgia. Nothing more, nothing less. Pretty good way to make a living either way though from a money aspect, which is the driving force for virtually every band out there--Journey included.

I agree but then it comes back to the Tribute Band thing.

hardly any more than the Frontiers lineup with Cain and Smith covering Rolie and Dunbar's parts on Lights and Wheel in the Sky.......not to mention the 3-person lineup of the Raised on Radio tour.

I understand your point....I think being the most visible part in the band makes that one position in any band the hardest to replace...due to the phrasing and vocal ability.

for Journey, yes.

True. I still think it may have been possible circa ROR. I'm not aware of any band who has successfully replaced the main singer after a large hiatus and well away from their main success days. Perry would be very hard to replace regardless.

This is way too intelligent of a conversation! I am waiting for the swearing and name calling....sniff sniff I miss home...where am I???

ACDC successfully did it and to a lesser extent VH did too.

I think the acceptance of AC/DC was due to the fact that the lead singer had died.

VH did do it IMO.....Sammy did work....but then maybe it goes back to the songs revolving around
Eddie and not the lead singer....VH also had radio success with Sammy...so when they toured they were
not stuck singing the VH version of the Dirty Dozen...they could play the hits that were on the radio..I don't
think that has worked as of yet for Journey.

Most of these fans don't like Arnel, and Neal Schon needs to pull the scarub out of his ass and realize that!! :)

It's funny that when it"s Steve Perry replaced, people can selectively call it a tribute band. No...a tribute band is what Jeremey does, with no original Journey members. If you want to go there, it could have been a called a tribute band as soon as singer #1 was replaced. Nice try dear.

Try this sweetums!

I think it boils down to who was singing when the band was playing stadiums....that my snookums was Perry. HH told Neal here is your new singer...deal with it....and well look what happened.

Now take out said lead singer and replace him...but still play the same songs...night after night = tribute to the good ole days!!

kisses SteveO and don't ever call me dear!!!
