Perry was 1/5 of Journey but he brought 4/5 of the fans to journey.
Today that equation is balanced out again because Pineda brings in about 4/5 of the new fans.
So Journey`s equilibrium is just in time restored to make the perfect Hindi album.

And Journey, Looking into the Future and Next together sold about 3-400k... "all only had a fraction of the sales" and NO "hit singles" of Infinity, Evolution and Departure. All platinum plus, HUGE jump from the first three.

I didn't say there was NO success....I said the success they are remembered for. Journey is not remembered for 2x platinum albums from the 70's. 8x platinum for Escape, back then...6x platinum for Frontiers. DSB, the song that brought them back into the spotlight, is from Escape, not Infinity..

Monker wrote:Perry alone had a LOT of time to bring those fans in....and he didn't do it alone. Even Robyn Flans said in his Journey book that Journey was still a fledgling rock band by the end of Departure.

I guess it depends on who you ask...

" 'Evolution' b/c the bands biggest seller (800k in 3 months) and they embarked on a mammoth tour and set many attendance records and set the stage for an even greater triumph with 'Departure' in 1980." "Journey would go from huge cult act to monster superstars." itunes

That is way exaggerated. Of course Evolution because their 'biggest seller' at the time...but that was still before Escape. . Infinity peaked at #21, Evlution peaked at 20, Departure at #8. The ONLY 'top 20' single they had was LTS at #20. Compare that with what happened with Escape and Frontiers...it was phenomenal, and what they are remember for today...not LTS or Lights, WitS.

Those are great songs and great albums...but it was the combination of all of them in the 80's that brought JOurney the success they are remembered for. Steve Perry did not do it alone. .

Monker wrote:And, like I said, Perry fans only appreciate 1/5 of the whole
Perception is 9/10 of the law or is that possession... Anyways, look at this way, and you may fill in 2-5.

1. Sight - Perry
2. Touch
3. Hearing
4. Taste
5. Smell

Funny how you perceive music through your eyes and not your ears.

Why hijack a topic?

I listened to your take on Journey, but it was too painful to listen to after a few verses, I'm sorry to say. It only goes to show how difficult the Perry stuff is for decent AND great singers (Kelty I consider to be a great singer), but none of them will sound exactly like Perry, never. Not even Perry himself.

Good luck though with your tribute band, but I would advise you to focus on keeping better pitch.

I'm a fan and friend of Ernie's and I think he's unique. He can sing Sam Cooke pretty good. None of it's painful to me but each his own, right? I agree with your notion of how Perry's stuff is difficult. I think he's got it more so than Hugo, or even me. At least listen to him again and you'll see.
