An Evening with Journey

Now, I am not a know it all...However, it does seem to be true, and likely will happen, that Journey will tour alone this summer/autumn, with no warmup act, and shows will last for 3.5-4.0 hours...
The CD "giveaway" upon entrance to the show(included in ticket price), is still being dealt with.

I have heard this same story from TWO completely different people in two different completely areas of the business.

Question: Do you all want a marathon show, a.k.a. Springsteen? or a warmup band?

A marathon show...absolutely. That way we will get to hear music we have not heard in a long time. More variety.

Does anyone think this may be a way to "close the book" on some of the older material?

Maybe not so much of putting to rest the older material, but hopefully introducing a lot of the new!!!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing Journey this year in the Tampa Bay area.

Journey On!

I really just don't foresee Augeri's voice holding up for 3 & a 1/2 hours.
These are hard songs to sing, man!
Would Perry even do such a long set?
Sure Phish can play straight through the night, but Journey ain't Phish and moreover when was the last time u heard a vocally demanding Phish song.
Oh, that's right, u didn't.

While I am sure Steve will be in the best shape of his life for this tour, I think the setlist will prove very accomodating for Steve's voice too. With solos and four other vocals, plus the intermission I think he will do ok. I also have noticed that he has been singing the songs more and more to his voice and character instead of Perry's as he did in the beginning. Using "his voice" will be beneficial as well. Making these songs "his" on stage instead of trying to emulate Perry willl have less wear and tear on his voice.

I think Steve will do fine. The setlist will likely accomodate him and his voice. I think this would be a good way to put to bed the old material. Journey has new wings... Time to use them...It's their time to fly.

Making these songs "his" will definitely establish Steve's credibility as a singer...once and for all.

I don't think so..read the post I just posted..."Awesome read." In it Neal says, we play the hits, we always play the hits." I want to hear the hits, who doesn't? However, he also said they will do everything from their history.

As for Augeri, lets see, currently, they play about 22, 23 songs per night. Of those, Deen sings 2, Ross 1, Neal 1, and Cain 1..total time= 2 hours.

So, for a 4 hour show, Augeri needs to sing about 30 songs...yikes..but with intermission, and sharing vox with Deeno, it is manageable..Bruce does it(plays for 4 hours), but some of his songs are stretchouts and lots of music and not vox..

Maybe we should ask Sngchick..she is a singer.

Also, don't forget if they truly play the WHOLE catalog as Neal's been saying, the stuff on the first 3 albums are not all that tough vocally -- way more instrumental than lyrical. Hell, if they just pull out "Topaz" I'll be a happy camper!

New rumor...

Yes the band will play up to 4 hours. but... and this is only rumor I stress...

We all have been wondering if Augeri 's voice could handle that long of a show?? Well, the words I'm hearing are possibly Neal playing some of his solo stuff as well...if true, that could take up an hour...

Thoughts??

I don't know where you get your information from, but I don't have to be "in the know" to confirm that as a lie.
Neal, like Herbie, is a realist.
He knows Journey is his meal ticket and he is not going to jeopardize the steady concert returns by suddenly filling the set with obscure guitar instrumentals & solo work.
What a setlist that would be.
I can see it now, they'd start off with "Don't Stop Believin", followed by "Open Arms", then possibly by "Escape", which is soon followed by everyone's favorite song to sing along..err..better make that hum along to, that of course being "Night Spirit". For the next one, Neal gives us fore notice to get our lighters out, which was really cool, and as I grapple for it, I hear the opening cords to "Send Me An Angel". I can't believe it! The crowd goes nuts!!! This is then followed by thee ultimate feel good, crowd pleasing, toe tapper of the evening"Blackened Bacon".

And then right when you think this concert couldn't possibly get any sweeter, Neal returns for an encore and plays that song were he mimics the sounds of howling wolves in heat with his guitar.
Throughout all this, Augeri shakes a tamberine, and does his homo dance or something.
Man, what a concert!
By show's end everyone is in agreement that while the concert rocked, it kinda sucked that Neal didn't play "Smoke of the Revolution". That was soooo totally the song of either everyone's prom or wedding dance.
What the hell was he possibly thinking?

In all seriousness...
Do you get my point?
Mark my words, Rockn'Deano.
Neal will never mix his solo work with Journey. He is all too entirely aware that they are two completely separate and unmixable beasts (and he intends to keep it that way).
Perhaps you have this confused with the latest rumour that Neal is possibly going on tour in support of his latest solo release, IonU?

hey moron.. re-read what I wrote..I said firstly, that this is rumor, and I also was trying to say Neal might do some solo stuff during the first hour.. you are as bad as Monker..

Andrew- we've got a live one on our hands here

Rock'ndeano wrote: ..I said firstly, that this is rumor,

Umm, yeah and that's why I accordingly treated it as such.
I'm sorry, are you under the impression that I treated it as something else? What are you reading that I'm not? You said "the words I'm hearing" so I told you that those people, or whoever it is, that is trying to sell you that mound of baloney is flat-out lying to your face.
You asked for feedback on the "rumour" you "heard" so I respectfully obliged and gave you some.
Adverse to feedback all of a sudden?
Then why'd you ask for any, you crotchety old bastard!

Rock'ndeano wrote: and I also was trying to say Neal might do some solo stuff during the first hour

Umm, while it's really enlightening that you clarified that you were "trying" to say that, ultimately, you didn't say that. I don't care what you were "trying to say". I only have the ability to read and respond to what you actually DO say. Sorry, not endowed with super human, mind reading, psychic abilities here- that's only Monker.
What you said was, that the solo stuff might take up an hour, not the first hour.
Besides what does it matter, it's totally irrelevant.
An hour, half hour, first hour, four hours, last hour, ten minutes, forty days, forty nights-it simply ain't happening!
I stand by what I said before. Whoever fed you this "rumour" is lying to you and playing you for the gullible, coarse, loud mouthed, town yokel that you really are.

Well, Neal really only plays 1 solo per night, and you have to admit, The Star Spangled Banner is just sick...too good as is Amazing Grace. He does do some extended jamming on some songs like Chain Reaction and others..

Also, are you guys sure you want to hear songs like Cookie Duster, and stuff from the first 3 albums? I am not hot on that but oh well....I would love to see something like, Too Late, Winds of March, Precious Time, and People and Places..

Winds of March....YES! My favorite

As for the Star Spangled Banner solo, I thought it very cool the first year I saw him do it, (actually on the 4th of July) BUT was surprised that he did it again the following year.....and I am hearing that he did it on last summers tour also?? I would have done something different EACH tour.

Haha! Like it!!

As far as national anthem guitar solos go, I don't think anyone has come close to Brian May of Queen playing 'God Save The Queen' on the roof of Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Jubilee Concert!!!

There he was, this long shaggy haired rock guitarist on top of the Queen of England's house playing our national anthem with a guitar he hand made for just £18!!!! Awesome!...the kind of thing dreams are made of!

Neal's been doing the SSB pretty much since 9/11 and the start of the war in Iraq. It's his tribute to the troops.

You have to understand Paul, that in America the SSB is America's song. It's of my OPINION, that most Americans don't really care what happens outside Her borders. But I have to say, when Neal played that solo, and the red, white and blue lights were lit, that was magical..and I am from Canada!

??
The grammar made that difficult to understand.

But I will say that Neal needs to step back just a little. And I would like to hear him play more melodic than shred. He blurs his notes when he shreds.

I am sure! I would LOVE to hear some of the early stuff. There is no reason for these guys to ignore that part of their history. Those first three albums shaped Infinity. And you can definately hear the influence on Dream After Dream. They ARE a part of Journey's history. But I think this will be the LAST chance we have of hearing them. I still think this is a way to bid farewell to some of their old material.

I would love to see something like, Too Late, Winds of March, Precious Time, and People and Places..

Precious Time has been played. In fact, it is the only reason why I went to the Main Event Show. But, sadly, it had been dropped by the time I got to see them. :( People And Places and Winds Of March would be HUGE!!

I could do without it but it is in support of the troops.

I do not think the "30 years flag" is enough...it runs into 27, 28 and 29 cause they have been out on the road with the same old stuff the last few years.
