I posted this in the middle of another post, but no one has answered it, so hopefully this will help.

I used to know this, but what is the story behind the band putting "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)" at the end of the Captured album? I heard a story that they wrote that song in about 15 mins. and recorded it on the spot? Is this true?

Perry and Schon penned that tune in a hotel room and backstage in one day..with Perry on bass guitar and Neal on his own axe..

Great tune.
Sounded even better live this past year.
I have a boot of it if any one is interested (with Deen and Augeri sharing lead vocals and both sounding amazing.)

Guys my computer is having problems and will be re-formatted in a matter of days. I tried sending the file to you all last nite, but my comp. simply won't co-operate. My Capturedquestion is whether there is an existing studio version of "Dixie Highway". Can't imagine the studio version would do it justice though!

Hmm. Firstly, does "The Party's Over" even have a keyboard in it? I do not know. Secondly, "Lights" was written by Perry(lyrics), and I believe it was written about Los Angeles when Steve lived there. I seem to remember that it was originally "When the Lights, go down on Mulhullond.." I may be wrong, but I did hear that from a reputive source. About TPO and who wrote it...I do think it was Steve but will check on that. However, I do seem to think that the backstage part of my original post may be incorrect. Seperate Ways may have been what I was thinking with Steve on bass and it being backstage.. I will confirm all my bullshit, okay?

Yes, "The Party's Over" does have a keyboard in it. It was played by a studio musician -- I think his name was Tim Gorman, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

"Lights" was originally penned about LA when Perry lived there. Those of us who live in the SF Bay Area choose to ignore that fact.

"Separate Ways" was written by Jon & Steve, no Neal, so that's not the tune you're thinking of. The only Neal/Steve songwriting story I know is "Patiently", but I'm sure there must be others that I've forgotten over the years...

I was just flipping through the Time 3 booklet and there's a passage where Rolie reminisced on how, after his "audition" Perry strapped on a bass and played "Lights" for him and the band.

A little further down it mentions the first song Perry and Schon wrote together which was "Patiently"

Patiently WAS the song written by Steve and Neal in a hotel room (in Denver). It was the first thing they wrote together and it ignited their chemistry. It wsa that song that convinced NEal that Perry was the right choice after all.

The Party's Over was INCORRECTLY credited to Tim Gorman on Keyboards. Tim has worked with Ross in The VU so there is a Journey connection. However, Stevie Keys performed keyboards on TPO. Stevie Keys also has a working relationship with Ross and other Journey members.

Hmm, since this topic got re-surrected, I believe SP had sole writing credit on TPO(HIL). It is song he wrote near the end of the Departure tour in which he presented to the band at a sound check in Detroit. He says he writes a lot of songs and hooks on the bass guitar.

Dixie Highway was a song they came up with collectively in a jam session, also on tour. These were the 2 new songs put on the double LP, Captured. Dixie Highway being live, and TPO was studio-recorded after Gregg formally left the band -- to wind up Captured.

DH was always played live -- don't know of a recorded version. The band started playing TPO a lot with Jon on board, mostly during the Escape tour.

The Party's Over's one of the best songs perry's ever written, probly THE best for my coin.

Good angst coming out.

Also a near total "Departure" from the bluesier Hammond-driven vibe of the Rolie era.

I never was into TPO but I love it now.

Agreed. Probably my favorite INTRO on a Journey song. Perry's vocals, then right into Neal's guitar......love it!

Not true. 'Keep On Runnin'' is a much better rockin' tune than 'Lay It Down'. Even 'Dead Or Alive' is better. Either way, TPO would have made for a perfect album.

I don't believe Steve played TPO on any of his FTLOSM shows. Ironically, he chose to include Dixie Highway on most of the setlists -- not a good decision, imo.

I thought there was audio somewhere of Steve Perry introducing "Lights" and saying "a song written about my hometown, San Francisco."?

Yea, that auido is on Captured and Time3.
Perry DID write it about LA I think when he was down there w/ the Alien Project.

But then he brought it to Journey and the whole motif changed to San Francisco.
