Soul SirkUS: Coming Home

Postby Hippie » Wed Mar 23, 2005 7:24 am

Anybody know if that's Jeff Scott Soto singing lead on "Coming Home"?

Sounds like a dead ringer for Perry! I'm wondering if that's actually Castranova on Lead. Castranova sounds more like Perry than Augeri does in concert!

The World Play disc doesn't mention music parts done on each song; just what each person does in the band as a whole.

Anybody know?

It's JSS.
While I agree he does do many Perry-isms (or Sam Cooke-isms, rather) in that song, I don't think he has anything on Castronovo or even Auggie, for that matter. People have been saying for awhile now that JSS is a "dead ringer" for Perry on that song (Neal even said so) and frankly, I just don't hear it. Again, he does a few of the Cooke-isms, but in terms of high-pitchness, his voice doesn't even compare to Steve Perry or Steve Augeri.

Oh I think JSS sounds very much like Frontiers-era Perry. The quality of his voice and the "Sam Cooke-isms" as you put it. I would not use the term dead-ringer but he is VERY similar. JSS said he tried to write that song differently but it kept coming out like a Journey song so they went with it. JSS was worried that Neal would not like the song because it is too similar to a Journey song. All of this adds together to create the Perry/Journey quality.

It's EXTREMELY Perry....
And even then, Jeff 'turned down' that a little....he can sing like just about anyone anywhere....

Andrew rules, but he is biased... :D

JSS is awesome, and this will surprise people..but he is no Steve Perry. See, I told you all, that I thought Steve Perry was awesome?!

Perry could sing rings around both Augee, Deeno, and JSS, but elects not to....that's what Pisses me off...not Lori, or HOTS or PF.. i love Perry over all 3, but hate his attitude.

Anyway, Coming Home is a Perryism IMO...sorry Andrew, JSS cannot hunt with Mr. Perry on singing talent, even though he is that good.

Yours faithfully, Deano

No offence taken...

I agree - NO ONE could take on Perry in his prime, but that has long since passed.

I've seen Jeff live over a dozen shows...amazing voice :)

JSS is one of the most versatile singers I have seen/heard. He can sing the ballads and he can scream. He has a Perry kind of sound when he wants to and he has a Sammy kind of sound when he wants to. He has a gift.

Very educational! :D

Thanks for the imput everybody.

BTW: I agree there's only one Perry, but Castronovo, Steve A and JSS make decent successors.

Castronovo in particular blew me away with his performance on "Mother Father" last time I saw them on tour (Which is why I thought it was him on "Coming Home").

I'd to hear him sing lead on a song or two on the new disc!

While I am sure we will get to hear Deen's voice on lead vocals some time. I don't think it will be on new Journey material....maybe a "duet" in Journey, definately harmonizing, but not lead.

It does not say Deen is singing lead. Deen, himself, reported that everyone else is singing lead. But he did not include himself in that report.

However, I am sure there will be other opportunities for Deen.

Looks like Deen will be singing on the new record. This is a quote from Neal on the main page:

"Everyone is singing on it. I have a blazing track on it…Deen is most likely going to end up on at least one or two tracks. Ross is singing - he actually sounds cool on this song I wrote, a shuffle boogie that sounds a little bit like ZZ Top and Van Halen. Jon is singing a lot on this record…some duets and also one by himself."

Sounds like a fun record!
