Deen Reports From The Studio

Postby jrnyman28 » Thu Mar 24, 2005 3:08 pm

From Back Talk, check out the track names!!

"Drum Kits:
Deen has two different drum kits. He wants the fans to decide which one he will use on tour. He will send us photos of them soon. One is flame red and the other is crystal blue. Jim is currently designing the crystal blue kit and Deen said that it is beautiful! Once the kit has been chosen, then we can suggest mascot names. Deen also said that Jim will be out with Virgil for Soul SirkUS and hopes that Virgil doesn't steal him away because Jim is the BEST tech he has ever worked with, BAR NONE!

Journey Fan Collage?

Deen: "The collage is hanging on the entry to the clubhouse. It is the first thing we see when we go in. I have met at least half of the people on there!"

How many tracks on the new CD?

Currently there are 12 tracks with a couple of bonus tracks for Japan & Europe.

Possible CD Names?

Still tossing around names, so far "Freedom, Move, and Return" are being considered.

Tour start?

They are looking at mid-July to give Neal enough time to come back from Soul SirkUS, regroup and rehearse for the tour with Journey.

Video?

There have been a couple of cameramen in the studio documenting the recording process.

Song Titles?

Faith in the Heartland
Knowing that you love me
She flies Alone
Better Life
She's Gone Crazy ("Line of Fire on CRACK!")
Self Defense
Never too Late
Pride of the Family
A Place in the Heart
Every Generation

(There are more songs but those are the ones we discussed)

Deen: "These are brilliant songs! Jonathan's ballad "Knowing that You Love Me" is definately the next Open Arms! It's just incredible! A lot of colors on this record. The ballads aren't like Arrival, we were free to go where we wanted us to go instead of the label telling us where to go. Jonathan is just amazing, we are all coming into our own. Steve, Jonathan ,Neal and Ross will be singing (lead) on the record. We are very proud of this CD. The whole band gets to do something here, it's GREAT!"

Kevin Elson:

Deen: "I have never worked with a producer that was so easy going. It's been so much fun. And, Mike Frazier, who did the Bad English records with us, is The King -- we love him! Because of Kevin and Mike it will be the best CD we have ever done! We are doing EVERYTHING in one or two takes!

Kyle:

Deen: "Kyle is here with me now warming up the drumheads for me. Kyle is excited about the new baby, "gives him someone to beat up." (Laughs) Kyles' band SYLINCE is going to be recording at Jonathan's studio soon!"

Final words:

Deen: "The vibe here is wonderful! You will not be disappointed (with this CD), the chemistry has made this such a pleasure, such a blast!"

Wow, I don't think I've heard such a great upbeat vibe from the Journey camp for many a year! It really seems that the band have been injected with a shot of enthusiasm since the HOF induction!

Can't wait to hear the finished product!!!!

Great interview! So exciting to hear the names of the songs, possible CD titles, etc. The best part is that Deen is recovered from exhaustion and ready to rock again! It will be very interesting to hear the songs Journey comes up with when they are so free to do what they want.

This is exciting news. Journey to my recollection never seemed so upbeat for an CD offering. I hope this sounds half as good as the hype.

However, you know it's only a matter of time until the ladies come in here and bash the party, rain on the parade, and sprinkle negativism on the effort.

Current Journey rocks...

This is a VERY exciting time to be a Journey fan! Deen is a great spokesperson because he exudes energy and excitment!

But let's just wait and see how "the other side" reacts instead of instigating them.

I honestly see only ONE argument from them...'why do they need to have everyone singing? Can't Steve handle it by himself?'
To this I reply, Journey does not NEED everyone to sing, they are just THAT full of talent that they CAN have everyone sing!!

Jrnyman28, you are right, I should wait for them to drop their collective bombs before I react...But you know what, they are undoubtedly huddling up now, planning strategy, and getting their stories and arguments together. By me keenly throwing up the proverbial concrete barrier, and firing off the first tomahawk, now they need to "regroup" and re-think their ploys....I am not losing this one...this one is personal. I allegedly "lost" the Classic Journey thread, whereas I was totally correct on everything, and they whined their collective asses off, but this time will leave no doubt...I am getting pissed earlier, ahead of time, in order to carry that enthusiasm over to the battlefield. Just sit back and watch the sparks fly...oh and feel free to help this time, If I request mortar support....

So if this is like Iraq, and I am the USA, you be my UK. And Yak can be Australia, and "they" will be known as Germany, France and Russia. Ok a little overboard but fun nonetheless.

I disagree with this. I'd rather NOT have Neal sing. He can save that for his solo work. He does not have a particularly good voice. Jonathan is acceptable, in a role simular to what Gregg had. I can't comment on Ross or Dean since I have not heard them sing.

But, the point is, just because they CAN do something does not mean they SHOULD do something. I would rather have each of them do what they do best...and that would mean Neal, probably Ross, and maybe even Jonathan don't get a song to sing lead vocals on. I think it will lower the overall quality of the CD.

Monker, you haven't seen Deen sing? let me clue you in a little. Firstly, Neal does not have a great voice, but IMO it's better than Cains'....Ross really can't sing either..Hell, we all can sing "Walks Like a Lady," and Deen...well, Deen is as good as anyone, if not better than Augeri....Maybe they are trying to export their all around talent......Could you imagine this being done in the Perry era? I can't and frankly I wouldn't want to hear anyone but him sing..yes, he was that good...

Hope new album really rocks as Deen says. I cant wait to hear the album. Im counting days actually even I dont know the exact day of the release.
I dont think Journey haters will have anything to complain and will continue to live in the past. Hope next year they put out a live dvd of the new tour so I can see them in action

Maybe the will mainly be doing like Rolie and Perry, were Perry handled the main part of the song, or duets. But Augeri needs to be know as the voice now-ERIC

Years ago, before Arrival, I asked Jonathan about this in a Q/A. It may still be up on Jonathan's site...He said it was one of the things they are talking about doing.

Neal's vocals have never impressed me, especialy in the studio...Schon/Hammer, Late Nite, etc. He just sounds very nasaly.

I like Jonathan's voice on Back to the Innocence. If the song is right, he sounds great.

I agree. Anytime that a band has a laid back attitude in the studio, the producer is usually not running the show. Anytime the band gets what they want, it ain't good. That's my experience anyway. Let Augeri earn his keep.
