JOURNEY AND SOLO CDS AND SIDE PROJECTS

Postby Abitaman » Wed Apr 06, 2005 8:32 pm

I was wondering what Everyone thought of the Journey cds, I have an idea of what is liked and what is not, but not how well. With Journey coming out with a new cd soon, this would be a good chance to see how the Journey picture looks. I did this over on the Styx board, one night, when I was bored, and there was not much to talk about. And got a good insight. There has not been a lot going on here so.........
Just grade the Journey cd, I don't care how letter on number, play along if you wish, or if you are like me and and I woke up an hour early. Add anything else to this too or comments

Wow, that is a very comprehensive list! I love Journey but have not heard all of the solo and side projects! I definitely wonder how you can grade ROR higher than Frontiers. ROR, IMO, is their second worst album (after TBF). Just my opinion!

I agree with ESC4P3 being an A+. If you like that, get the new Shy CD, Sunset & Vine. Almost as good as ESC4P3, and very similar to Journey.

I will rate the albums when I have more time.

ROR, there is just something about that cd that I like, but why higher than Frontiers?
ROR has a cleaner production, though Perry was great on production. While Frontiers out rocked ROR (Loved Back Talk), at times thoses songs seemed forced. They were still good. ROR seems to flow better, even with all the that was going on with the band at the time. ROR just hit the right spot with me, relaxing but not to soft, rocked with out being over the top. Neal and Steve sounded great, the last time the would.-ERIC

That is the biggest problem I had with the cd. Production is below average for Journey. But, the songs are very good. Just wish there had been more of them-ERIC

I just thought I should add the really good THE VU album "Phoenix rising" that was released on Frontiers in 2000,it featured Ross Valory,Prairie Prince,Kevin CHalfant,Tim Gorman and Stef Burns.
It sounds just as good as The Storm and better than Two Fires.

Yes i picked it up a couple of months ago. Traded for a copy of it. Only knew Kevin was on lead vocals. Didn't know it was as new as 2000, or that Ross was on it.-ERIC

Eric, it was re-released, or officially released, in 2000. It was recorded in the 80's.

Journey B
Look Into the Future B
Next B+
Infintiy A
Evolution A
Departure A-
Captured A
Escape A
Dream After Dream A (LOVE it when the unexpected is done!)
Frontiers A-
Rasied on Radio A (the lower register RULES)
Trail By Fire D (unexpected, yes...but uninspired IMO - "MOL" = "Separate Ways" at a faster tempo)
Arrrival F (you should know WHY by now...)
Red 13 C (dunno)

STEVE PERRY
Street Talk A+
For the Love of Strange Medicine B-
"I Stand Alone" (Quest For Camelot soundtrack) - B
"Can't Fall Asleep To a Lullaby" (B V for "America") A - yup - Steve's DEFINITELY on there!
"I Wish You Were Mine" (T Tokioka) C - sound very VERY raspy
"If Only For The Moment, Girl" - A - Steve should do MORE "Island Jazz" type music!
"It's Over" (F. McDonald) - Early Steve - A - Developing the high register - Forrest worked w/ him in the mid-70s - a sign of things to come....
"Can't Let You Go" (J. Golub - guest vocals) A - suprising, IMO...I know it's just that sentence over and over....but, IMO his backing vocals harken back to the clear, high voice of the "Escape" era...and hey- he WAS in the studio again.
"White Fool" (Clannad) A - kudos to Steve for attemting GAELIC, of all things!

....there's more; can't think of them right now.....

Arrival an F??????? That blows my mind. Is it because Augeri is trying to sound like Perry? True he should have been "more" his self like in Red 13. Is that why you rated that one higher? Just wondering.

Have not heard most of the Perry songs listed latter. Can you tell me what cds they are on? Like to try and get a copy of them-ERIC

This has always confused me. Other than on "All the Way" wherein Augeri purposely utilizes an obvious Sam Cooke-ism, where exactly on the album does he sound like he is trying hard to be Perry?
On "Kiss me Softly" ? Nope.
On "Im not that Way"? Not-at-all.
On "Live and Breathe"? Not hardly.
Yeah, ok, so on a few songs he hits a few high notes and has a high pitched voice like Perry, but then again, that's true of Red 13, as well. If you think he is *trying* to sound like Perry on Arrival, then I can't see how anyone can honestly make the argument that he somehow is NOT trying to be Perry-like on Red 13. In fact, I think State of Grace is one of his more Perry-ish vocal deliveries. He uses his upper range to full effect on that song.

I'm not saying that Augeri and Perry don't naturally share some vocal similarities, I'm saying that I don't hear or detect any deliberate forced inflections on Augeri's part to try to mimic Steve of old.
As far as I can tell, Augeri is just belting it out and relating it in his own way.

I think this comes from the fact that almost ALL of Arrival sounds like Journey was trying to sound like the Escape-era Journey. But it is unfair to criticize Journey for this since it was JDK and SONY choosing the songs to accomplish that sound.

But then again, Journey could have balked at that, they could have a refused. But they didn't...

oh PLEASE for the LOVE OF GOD - lighten up!!!

I was making fun of myself on how I used to "carry on" about how they replaced SP.

Why do you think I put the " " face after the phrase "you should know WHY by now"?

....and yes - I STILL don't like it

AND FYI - "Red 13" should've read just "dunno" - I didn't know that the "C" was there.

If you'd care to look, you'd see my comments were made in response to Eric's remarks, not urs. I am fully aware that you were being light hearted and were playing up how u used to "carry on" about Perry on these boards.

Sorry I ahve took so long to responed. Had to reboot my computer, so much spyware on it. When I fianlly got rid of them, a lot of my programs and etc came up missing. Still do not alot of things up, email, my msic programs etc, hope by weekend to be back 100%. Just got online this morning after about 4 days off.
Anyway my response is to the F grade on Arrival! Don't remember who made the comment, about Arrival. But I was wondering why thought Arrival was an F. Was it becasue Augeri was Sounding like Perry?

I know Augeri is going to sound like Perry, but he is not a clone! If there weren't some things about him that were like Perry he wouldn't have gotten the job. Augeri is own person. My comment was that it is becasue of this that it wasn't Perry, that Arrival was given an F. I like Arrival, look on my list of grades on the Journey cds ond solo post.

Anyway I', going to finish flipping through the post here, and see what I have missed. Should have email up tonight or tomorrow, then I can look at my email and see where I need to go here.-ERIC
