Journey's Lousy Venue Selection so far.

Look at the crummy places Journey is going to be playing according to their website.

7/15 Moondance Jam Walker, MN On Sale Now
7/22 Lake Afton Park Goddard, KS TBA
8/2 Universal Lending Pavilion Denver, CO TBA
8/9 Buffalo Chip Sturgis, SD TBA
8/10 Sioux Empire Fairground Sioux Falls, SD TBA
9/7 Wolf Trap Washington, D.C. 4/23/05

What is it with Journey and playing the casino circuit? Is their cut larger? Is Neal part American Indian? I've heard of many non-Journey fans attending the casino shows and just sitting there. And they're in the front row!

How come Journey won't play at established concert venues such as: Nissan Pavilion, Red Rocks, Bank of America Pavilion in Boston, MA, or any other real concert venue. Instead, Journey is going to play the boring casino, camp ground, and fair ground tour.

Whoever books Journey's venues does a lousy job.

Journey are playing these places because they want to. They want intimacy, they want to be able to play 4 hour shows in small venues, have the CD go big, use this circuit to help expand the audience base, and probably go back out again at a ampitheatre sized tour.

O Sherry, go to hell.

By the way, troll, that Moondance date is a huge concert. Many bands over many days, and Many Many people.

The Moondance event has many acts. However, the location stinks. I always keep my camping and rock concerts separate.

Then why are you responding? Only the has-been or bands with a rapidly diminishing fan base play the horrible casino circuit. Is Neal Schon part American Indian and does Journey get a bigger pay cut when then play the casino circuit instead of the tradition concert venues.

Journey's concert venue selection so far is lousy this year.

Do you want me to say Journey is wonderful? They have the best concert venues this year? You don't have to get angry about my opinion.

The casino, fairs, and camp grounds venues do not attract the big names. Journey is playing at obscure casino venues anyways. Finally, it is true that many non-Journey fans get the best seats at the casinos, which is bad for their fans and the concert.

I've been to three Journey concerts and each time my enjoyment for them decreased. I've seen the "greatest hits" tour already and don't need to see it ever again.

That's simply not true. I saw them at a local fair and the night before they hosted JimmyEatWorld, and the night before that they had DefLeppard and before that Alicia Keys etc etc.
Plenty of big acts play at fairs and other non-arena venues these days.
Just witness the recently announced Bryan Adams/Def Leppard tour (touring minor league stadiums, I believe)
Not all fairs get huge names, but it is nowhere near such an anomaly as you would have it seem.

JourneyTroll wrote:Finally, it is true that many non-Journey fans get the best seats at the casinos, which is bad for their fans and the concert.

Give me a break, that's remains true nomatter WHAT venue a band plays at. Many times the most loyal and hardcore of fans don't get the close seats they want or feel they deserve. But what in the hell does that have to do with the fact that it is at a casino?

If that's the case, then why are you on here bitching about the venues they are scheduled to play at?
What do you care?
Do you frequently protest and object to things that have ABSOLUTELY ZERO impending impact or significance in your life?

This is true. Plus, the ball park venue is not in this category. You wouldn't see U2 play at a county fair would you? The only place to see a successful rock band is at a concert venue. Not the casinos, fairs, or camp grounds.

Jimmy Eat World is not a big act.

I won't give you break. Casinos are the worst at giving away the best seats to non-fans. How many stories do we have to hear of attending a Journey concert at a casino and seeing non-fans just sitting there, not clapping, and leaving early. On one account, a guy and his date were doing a crossword puzzle at a Journey casino concert.

Some of the best casinos such as Foxwoods are ok. However, the Journey casinos are the worst ones in 2005. I am still predicting Neal Schon thinks he is part American Indian.

Because Journey still has fans that are going to be deceived again. I am writing in their behalf because I am an altruist. Journey should not be able to play at obscure casinos just because their take is higher. Journey needs to play at established concert venues and not the horrible camping ground, fairs, or obscure casinos.

Whoever selects the venues for Journey in 2005 is doing a horrible job!

Deceived? In what way? You truly mean to say that fans of the band are so stupid that they aren't aware of where (or what type of venue) a show is being held at until they pull in the parking lot?
What are you saying?
That Journey concertgoers don't check to see where the concert is being held before they decide to purchase their tickets? Get the hell outta here! Location is a HUGE determining factor in any ticket purchasing decision.
People are fully aware of where the band is playing before deciding to (or not to) plunk down hard-earned cash to go see them.
Nobody is decieved.

Besides, people buy their tickets in advance.
The tickets all say where the show is being held. Nobody is deceived when they leave to go see Journey and arrive at a casino.
They all knew where the show was held when they initially bought the tickets.

It seems to me, that the only 'deceiving' going on is you trashing the band under a pretext of altruistic intentions.

They have only announced 6 or 7 shows so far. You are jumping the gun a little. But I would suspect that this will be indicative of the tour venues...playing some of the smaller venues allows Journey the freedom to play WHAT they want for AS LONG as they want. I am pretty sure that playing to smaller, more 'die-hard' audiences affords them the lee-way. This tour is about doing what A) we, the die-hard fans have asked for; and B) what Journey WANTS to do.

It is my sincere hope that the CD will reach more fans, show some success, and create an extended tour of larger venues. We shall see. I don't expect huge success, but I hope they will capture some more attention.

I seem to remember this same stale argument coming up last year--and other years, blah, blah, ad nauseum. I understand that some people must be very frustrated at Journey's staying power and continued ability to sell tickets. So complain all you want. The people buying the tickets that sell out the venues are not complaining. The promoters don't seem to be complaining. It's just the people who seem to come here for the sole purpose of complaining who are complaining--once again. I am shocked. Must be hard to be so negative consistently.

I'm glad we agree that Journey fans are being deceived. They play the casinos for the sole purpose of a larger take for them. Journey fans want to see Journey at concert venues and not at obscure fan un-friendly places. I heard of one Journey concert at a casino where a guy was in the front row with his girlfriend doing a crossword puzzle during the show. During another show, a guy was on his cell phone arranging the next poker game at the casino. I even heard of a Grizzly Bear jumping on stage at a camp ground show because he loved Steve Augeri's perfume.

Concert venues are the safe and ideal way of attending a rock concert for a successful band.

Why can't they do that at better locations? I find your reasoning selfish on part of the elitist Journey die-hard fans, and Journey. Journey should be available to everyone that wants to see them.

Journey needs to work with and not against everyone that helps make an album reach music listeners. The bullying tactics during the promotion of Red 13 failed and helped contribute towards Journey not getting any airplay on the radio.

This is a discussion board. People can discuss Journey without the fear of being banned unlike the sugar-coated other message board. Yes, Journey is struggling to survive with a greatest hits tour offering year after year. Yes, Journey enjoys playing casinos, fairs, and camp grounds instead of at easy to reach concert venues. The promoters should be fired for their horrible selections. Thankfully, important bands such as U2 still play at the best concert venues throughout the world instead of at obscure, dirty, and silly sounding places such as:

7/15 Moondance Jam Walker, MN On Sale Now
7/22 Lake Afton Park Goddard, KS TBA
8/2 Universal Lending Pavilion Denver, CO TBA
8/9 Buffalo Chip Sturgis, SD TBA
8/10 Sioux Empire Fairground Sioux Falls, SD TBA
9/7 Wolf Trap Washington, D.C. 4/23/05

Buffalo Chip? Sioux Empire Fairground? Wolf Trap? Sound like crummy places to see a rock concert to me. Can I attend the concert in a canoe, or while rock climbing?

If Journey is going to make the same mistakes year after year, then people should voice their displeasure again.

I hate to break it to you, but thousands of people go to these venues. Journey is not "struggling to survive" as they tour every year and have absolutely no problems selling the seats. If you had actually gone to any of the Journey shows lately you would know that prime seats are difficult to get. Brokers would not be charging the prices they do if nobody wanted to go to these shows.

Since the full tour has not even been announced yet, the only one of the listed venues I have been to is Wolf Trap. It is in Virginia, not D.C. It is great venue, btw, and some great shows play there. Be as negative as you want, Troll, but if you are not even going, why do you care so much? You are judging venues only by their name? How about we judge you by your name? Silly troll.

Actually Troll, LAW is right on Wolf Trap. Don't let the WOLF in Wolf trap scare you like the SH%$ in Buffalo Chips Campground. Wolf Trap is considered a pretty classy place by the Washington Crowd (which I was one of)

Now the Casinos are another story in my opinion. I have seen Journey at one of them and it made me sad....real sad to be there. The antics with the high rollers in the good seats got on my nerves among other things. They could have given a crap about Journey.

Journey is struggling to survive:

1. No radio airplay unless the songs have Steve Perry in them.
2. Two poor recent records/eps: Arrival & Red 13.
3. Yes, Journey tours every year with a greatest hits package.
4. The ticket brokers may have some of the best seats, but they have to "eat the tickets" since their prices are way too high. The best place to find affordable Journey tickets is on eBay. You know it, and so don't I.
5. Steve Augeri's voice gets weaker and weaker after every tour.
6. Since Journey has to play the casino circuit instead of the best venues throughout the United States, this proves they are struggling.
7. Journey's can't even get a tour going in Europe due to lack of interest.

I care because I am an altruist. Journey fans shouldn't have to go a shifty gambling hall to attend a rock concert. The venue names are goofy too. Buffalo Chip?

When you call me a silly troll, I consider that a personal attack. Refrain immediately. Instead, we can discuss this thread with the social maturity I display while posting.

Yet Journey seems to do rather well at these venues. If they didn't, they wouldn't return to them. The fans want to see Journey LIVE, wherever they can.

Now you are implying that the casino venues are NOT SAFE? And you are implying that they are not properly equipped to sound good? JSS wrote in his diary that one of the reasons more intimate settings are great to play is the fact that it is easier to get the sound 'right'. The bigger the venue, the more challenging it is to have true sound quality. The sound bounces of walls differently. If it is outside the sound is not contained. Challenges...

I think that is WHY you see them play these locations. It makes it easier for the fans in rural areas see Journey. They can play more shows in more areas and reach more fans with less risk of 'not selling out' a larger venue.

But they also play the "concert venues" you refer to. That is when Journey is a part of a 'package' like the Main Event Tour or the Arrival Tour.

The only mistake I have seen Journey make year after year is not featuring more Augeri-era material. But they change the setlist each tour, they feature different 'rarities', they have shown their versatility with everyone singing. But every other tour Journey goes from bigger cities and venues, to the more rural ones. It is a pattern they have been following for SEVEN years now.
