Christophers' submitted (and sadly, rejected) covers

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Fri May 27, 2005 4:58 am

Check out Journey fan, Christopher's submissions for the "Generations" album (he also did Red 13's cover-which I thought stunk).
Anyhoo, his submitted and ultimately rejected "Generations" covers are IMO leagues above what we have been stuck with.
Check them all out for yourself (especially the "blue/brown tones" and the "modern egyptian one").

Fantastic stuff!

This one (though not one of his official submissions to the band) is prolly the best of them all.

Puts the one officially chosen to shame.
On that one, the scarab on the cover doesn't look sharp, looks it was done with a Crayola. Yuck!

Some really cool stuff, TNC. My fave is the last one you posted b/c it fits so well with the GENERATIONS title. My others are the modern Egyptian, Planet Us cover, and the red/yellow tones. He is a talented guy!

All of those are better than the cover Journey picked. Must be some political reasons.

Agreed.
This cover royally sucks a fat one.
Maybe Andrew can shed some light as to why Neal and Jon would choose such an atrociously uninspired piece.

The scarab is designed to look metallic, but the graphic just doesn't have any sort of high definition acute sheen to it.
Just all around dull, blunt and ugly.
Looks like my ten year old cousin, Oscar, went wild with the crayolas.

I like the Tan Look, very simple yet effective. And I like the use of "hieroglyphics" based on all the scarabs across the bottom of a couple of his designs. That really tied into the theme "Generations".

Funny thing, I saw Wavid's submission. I thought it was incredible work, but not right for the CD. He admitted having difficulty with the 'theme'. But it DEFINATELY surpasses what was chosen.

Now I have seen Christopher's submissions. I am not a big fan of Christopher's style of scarab. But again, I am usually very impressed with his work on other stuff. But this time, I think Christopher nailed the cover...maybe even twice. I really like the tan one. And those 'glyphs'...they were dead on!!

So, I have always loved Wavid's Journey related work, but I didn't feel his fit the theme. I have never really cared for some things in Christopher's Journey-related work, but I think he NAILED this one. And sadly, they picked 'the other guy'.

Now I am curious to see what Hacker submitted...

Just goes to show Journey management does a lousy job with the bottom line. They could have paid that load Christopher with year's worth of Hostess fruit pies, Twinkies or any one of several delightful, fattening treats. 8) :P

I couldn't draw a straight line if my life depended on it - so that tis not me...however, to call it crummy is going a little overboard...I mean all the art I've seen is really great IMO....

This is kinda like Journey MEETS Star Wars...Two of my Fave things!

Fortunately I am very talented when it comes to art, but even if I weren't, I would still be just as outspoken about the subject.
Not speaking as someone artistically talented, but rather, as a fan and consumer of all Journey albums, I just feel this is sub-par from what we've come to expect.
I am glad u like it though.

Noble cause! It's come to my attention that all you can draw is flies. I could be wrong but I doubt it. Quit your damn WHINING about everything. If it's not about Perry crapping on Journey, it's Augeri being the wrong choise for Perry's replacement, and now it's about the artwork for "Generations." Like anyone gives a shit about what you like or dislike. You already come off as a pompous asshole so you're irrelevant in the whole scheme of things, imo.
Again, I could be wrong. It's just my opinion.

When you do it you call it "your right to 'discuss', since this is a 'discussion board'...

He doesn't whine about that, he simply points out your erroneous thinking at times.

heardonthestreet wrote: it's Augeri being the wrong choise for Perry's replacement,

He has never said Steve was the "wrong" choice. He ONLY asked who else might have been a good replacement. And he has expressed his opinion of who might have done it better. But he never said Steve was the "wrong" man.

heardonthestreet wrote:and now it's about the artwork for "Generations."

You can opine, but he cannot...hypocritical, don't you think?

heardonthestreet wrote:Like anyone gives a shit about what you like or dislike.

And who cares about what YOU think? You know that is not the point, you have continually reminded people about the rights to state an opinion.

heardonthestreet wrote: You already come off as a pompous asshole so you're irrelevant in the whole scheme of things, imo.

Your right to state...except it sounds like the first part is fact and the 2nd part is opinion. Not true. It was also unnecessary to 'go there'. You can disagree all you want, but why do you need to get personal? You know what kind of response that will draw! But I guess I just answered my own question...

I am a very good artist.
Have done sculpture and charcoal etchings for years. Not flaunting it.
I was just making the point to Eric that being artistically inclined is not a pre-requesite for freely speaking one's mind about something.
Eric mentioned that he "couldn't draw a straight line".
I was saying that is totally irrelevant and a fans' aptitude or inaptitude to draw does not give one preponderance over another to freely critique the cover artwork.
As Journey fans and potential consumers (be they good artists or not), ALL should say whatever they feel.

I think the "Generations" cover art is derivative and uninspired and wether or not I can draw worth a damn should not and will not change that.

heardonthestreet wrote:Quit your damn WHINING about everything.

Every post u make is "whining" or some sort of pjerotaive attack.
Quite often I talk about the positive virtues of this band, as well.

heardonthestreet wrote:If it's not about Perry crapping on Journey, it's Augeri being the wrong choise for Perry's replacement, and now it's about the artwork for "Generations."

If I don't like something (be it an album cover, a song, a show) then I am going to talk about it.
As I said before-
If the band has an off-performance, I want to talk about it.
If the band has a phenomenal performance, I want to talk about it.
I am here to talk about the band, not be a blind cheerleader.
Save that Pollyanna shit for BackTalk or Perryville.

Since when did Andrew appoint u as official message board gestapo?

More importantly, just why are u taking offense at my expressed opinion on the cover of an album u surely won't be buying?

Weren't you the guy who was repeatedly making the asinine claim that as a direct result of me expressing my opinion, the band decided to curtail Augeri's lead vocal duties on the new album?

Yeah, actually you did say that.
On multiple occasions, too.
Here's one such quote (regarding a post I made wherein I stated Chalfant was a better choice for Journey than Augeri):

heardonthestreet wrote: suppose that the topic, which was so popular, might have influenced Neal and had him decide to take the heat off Augeri. A lot of you submitted your preferences at the time and as I recall, some of us felt it was demeaning to Augeri. Do any of you think that it may have undermined Augeri confidence somewhat?

Here's yet another one:

heardonthestreet wrote: Noble Cause, ran Augeri down in a recent topic and had others posting a preference to Augeri as frontman. No wonder they are trying to prop him up with the others who arn't really singers in their own right.

Surely you must hold my "likes and dislikes" in a pretty high regard if you're telling people that one of my mere opinions was capable of influencing a 30 year + rock band to alter their long standing format.

I mean, for months now you have been pushing this bonkers theory that all because of *ME* and one of my opinions, Augeris' vocal duties were delegated to others.

One day, (according to you) my "likes and dislikes" wield enough sway to make Neal take note and implement drastic creative measures and then the next day you discount it, saying my opinion ain't worth shit.

Well which is it?

My, what a consumate waffler you are.

If she says "Let's bury the ax so the board will be at peace", why do you then call her a bag of hot air, yak? Let it end. The bags of hot air are the ones who continue this worthless "discussion". I think we can look at the length of previous posts and see who the bags of hot air are. Even if I do agree with them most of the time, some posts are as long as War and Peace!

Go back and check her various posts where she says the same thing...that she's leaving...and you might just find that she IS a bag of hot air. Because she keeps on coming back with her smartass retorts. Either keep up or don't criticize the wrong people.

Faulting someone for the length of their post is as irrelevant as criticizing someone's spelling.
Both are non-issues.
Find fault with "what" I say, not how "long" or "little" it took me to say it.

Hey, I didn't name names. I usually agree and enjoy certain people's posts on here, especially yours TNC. Everyone can be long-winded once in a while, I just thought it was funny that yak called someone whose posts are usually very short a bag of hot air, esp. when it seemed she wanted to end the "battle".

I can't wait until something in Journeyland of substance happens so we can discuss it. You must admit, the Perryhead debates are getting as old as... well, Steve Perry! :P
