Neal and Jon: The Rolling Stoners...

I once read an interview (not sure where, I'll see if I can dig up the link) where Neal alluded to him and Jon smoking up together during some of their writing sessions.
With that being said, out of Journey's vast catalog, what songs do you think are most expressive of being written in an altered state of mind?
My choice:
I am going to say "Frontiers".
"Ooh it’s a 3d rise
All tech-na-ca-jive
Take a video dive
War is for fools
Crisis is cool
Barbarians play-ay-ay-ay"
Those lyrics are waay "out there", man.

I could see earlier stuff, before Jon, easily. But it is hard to pick something after Jon. Rubicon could. But I don't see pot as 'mind altering'...the best I can see is a happy or postive attitude, which most of Journey's material fits into. One More and Castle's Burning, Color's Of The Spirit too.

Good point, O.
I forgot about that.
However isn't that (Journey founder) Herbie Herbert's publishing firm?
Neals' has always been "fingers of joy" and Jons' is "so much music".
At least that is how they are credited on each song they have writing credits on.

Yeah, TNC, that's a good question ... I'm looking at Evolution liner notes right now and the Publisher is listed as Weed High - Nightmare Music (BMI), so now I'm not really sure. I know the Herbie company out of SF was called Nightmare and that's where they had that whole crew and did the marketing and merchandising for Journey and some other groups, but I'm not sure about publishing ...

Uh no they haven't always been known as those names..Neal was "Rockdog" and Cain was "Frisco Kid" right, Monker?? Perry was "Street Talk Tunes."

Interesting.
Here's another one, Augeri is "coney island cowboy".
Get out the older albums, I wanna see what Ross is credited as.

Out of the early days I can think of one instrumental off hand (also found on Time3) that Ross is credited with, I believe it cookie duster ( I could be wrong about the title).
And I think he was involved with Perry on La Do Dah on Infinity among a few others.
Unfortunately, I don't have my cds with me at the moment, so if someone wants to take a look, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Don't know for sure, but I do know what Perry said, in the ROR Rockumentary.......not an EXACT quote, but close enough.....
"You have to get off the road, otherwise you'll end up on the side of the road in the weeds somewhere." The last part is a direct quote.
Always wondered exactly what he meant. Interesting stuff.

That's a bit of a reach don't ya think? Of all the guys, and this is only my opinion, but I would say Perry was probably least inclined to party. I do remember an interview in which the Portugese god said, " there are times when the guys go out and party, and I have abstain..you know, for my voice..." I'll never forget that.

Someone once said there was a pic floating around of Perry wearing a shirt w/ a marijuana leaf on it. In the GH disk inside-cover, Perry's shirt has some sort of leaf-like formation on it, but I really don't think it's a marijuana leaflet.
Trial By Fire producer, Kevin Shirley is on record stating this about Perry, "He's um, he was a clean guy -- doesn't drink, do drugs, smoke. Doesn't like anyone around him to do it either, and he takes that to silly degrees. He checks up on people in his own ways."

You have TOTALLY misinterpreted my post. You are implying that I said Perry is a druggie. I merely posted what he said in the interview. He could have been talking about somebody else! What a concept, eh?
NC starts another interesting discussion, I add to it, and all hell breaks loose because some people can't read properly. (Sorry, NC)
Besides, didn't you say you have the ROR Rockumentary tape? I believe you offered to dub it for people for a fee. Why don't you go and get it and check it out for yourself?

No, you don't have to retract it.
I just don't get it.
Please explain what you meant by "here we go again" ?
Has someone brought this topic up before?

Come to think of it, besides the aforementioned early Rolie stuff, Rubicon, and Frontiers; State of Grace is kinda trippy, as well.
Did Schon and Cain possibly have one puff too many of the wild root before putting pen to paper here?
"light that can heal my soul
A light that can make me whole
And set me free...set my spirit free"
Jon Cain is known to be a very religious man, it would not suprise me in the slightest if he rambles on end about incorporeal, spiritual matters when he is fully blazed.

Both Jon and Neal are Pisces.
Pisces have very deep emotions and feelings.
I don't think any of their recent writings (i.e. 80's to present) are herb induced. It is just something that is in them.
I know, I know...I'll keep my thoughts to a minimum.
Just my 2 cents....
Journey On!

I don't think astrological signs have anything to do with anything. That stuff is hocus-pocus.
I can't imagine Jon being a doper with a wife and four children. He loves his wife and kids and seems happy to be a family man. I've never heard one word about him doing drugs.

IMO it is really hard to point to ANYTHING after 1983 that could be seen as drug-induced.

EXACTLY..Want proof? Look at some other bands (except U2), who are the same age, and/or came up ith Journey and compare their looks..
Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, Foreigner, Kansas, to name a few and look at their faces..just beaten to shit, wrinkles, and yes, those bands did a bunch of drugs.. I can think of a bunch more but have no time...
Journey still looks good, and lively...Hell, look at Steven Tyler..what a mess

Wow... lots of stuff.... the quote you're talking about TNC is from a Rockline interview from when they were promoting Arrival. The specific song referenced is "All the Things". I can't remember the quote exactly, but it was Jon saying something like they were "puffing" when they wrote the music for that song.
Weedhigh Nightmare was the publishing company all the way through Frontiers. Only ROR had the "Rockdog" "Frisco Kid" and "Street Talk Tunes" publishing.
As for Perry's "clean guy" ways -- uh, let's just say Kevin Shirley left out the word "now".
And, having witnessed at least one band member passing a joint around, I don't think they're squeaky clean boy scouts. (I mean c'mon... musicians from San Francisco??!!!!)

And with the way the band was splintering around the time of ROR it would kinda make sense that they would create and use their own publishing companies and leave Weed High behind ...

This is true...Neal also used "No More Tails" for a while after TBF.
There is also a pic of Perry wearing a NORML shirt....a lobby group which wants to legalize pot.

Thanks for that. No wonder I couldn't readily find the link.
It was on the radio.

Well now, consider me enlightened. So Perry could have been referring to any one...or all...of them!
Not really.

Maybe he isn't now...but I distinctly remember Cain saying in Keyboard magazine in the late 80s that while he was writing a song one night he was "a little bit high". I'm pretty sure he wasn't talking about having had a few drinks either. I've always thought the quote was interesting, and have always remembered it well, so this isn't something I am sort of vaguely remembering.
