I know many have complained over recent years of varying stations using Perry's vocals instead of Augeris'.
Neal denied having any involvement in that and said the use of the official Augeri-sung promos they send out (via management) is left up to the individual radio stations discretion.

In fact, one time Neal posted on Journey's official forums telling everyone to come over to the VH1 boards and have a good laugh at the Perry fans for mistakenly thinking they were hearing Perry on the ads when it was actually Augeri.
The Perry fans stood their ground and said Neal was wrong and they knew what they heard.

Oh well.

Doesn't seem to be a problem this year....so far.

Anyway, here's the radio ad's for this summers tour. Kinda neat. Enjoy.

Very cool.. I listened to all the bands.. REO and CCR used studio recordings..ZZ top was cool.. some were lousy.. Toto and Tears for fears sucked.. Journey did have the most exciting ad...

While Neal sent fans over to the board to have a good laugh at the Perry fans, the Perry fans had the last laugh because it was found on the internet that a website was advertising Journey with songs sung by Steve Perry.

I live in Northern Ca and I've heard the Journey's advertizement for this tour 2 times over the radio. One station was a classic rock station in Sacramento & another time I heard it, I was on a house boat on Shasta Lake & don't know what station the radio was on.

Anyways in these 2 advertizements that I heard the radio stations played ONLY Steve Perry music to promote the tour, & I heard NO SONGS SUNG by Steve Augeri to promote the Journey tour.

The radio Station in Redding is the Hawk, and all they ever play, period, is AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Skynard. They advertise for Bay Area concerts. That's the only way you hear Perry..

You'll note in my post Lori that I never once said one group was right over the other. That Neal was correct and the Perry people were wrong in what they heard.
No, I am not saying that.
As Neal said, the use of official Augeri-sung promos sent out (via management) is left up to the individual radio stations discretion. I believe that most likely the Perry-people did hear what they claim, however, I don't think this was deliberately done so by the band.

Well, like I said, its up to the station to use the promos the band sends out. I suggest contacting mangement (via one of the mods on BT) and tell them what you heard and on what station.

It wasn't a 'last laugh'. While some Perry-fans were correct that advertising using Perry's vocals was being used, they were encouraged to report the infraction to Journey management and they declined. Why? So they had something to complain about!

And on SOME occassions, the fans were incorrect because what they heard actually WAS Steve singing Perry-era music on the advertising. Of course that just meant that Perry-fans could complain that Journey was still using "Perry music" to advertise, erroneously referring to JOURNEY music as Perry music...

It is a shame you do not know the radio station that was playing, but I still ask that you report this to Journey management. HOWEVER, are you simply referring to the station playing a Journey song (yes, sung by Perry) and then talking about the tour? Or are you saying that the RECORDED tour promo uses Journey with Perry material? This is important, because we all know that the only Journey music played on the radio (especially classic rock stations, since they ONLY play old material) is Perry-era songs. That is an unfortunate truth at this time. But if the radio station is playing the material, and then announcing the tour, this is completely acceptable. YOU may like the idea, but Journey is not about to ask a radio station to stop playing their music because it still has Perry on it.

What radio ads I heard of Journey shows in the past years - and there weren't many - the studio tracks were used of the "classic" tunes...
The TV ad for TweeterCenter showed FRAMPTON, not Journey when he opened for the band...YIKES!!!

I think most casual fans of Journey and people under 30 don't even know that Journey has a "new" singer. Only people who love and "grew up" with Journey, like us, know about Augeri. For example, I played my sister the sample of the new song, and she assumed it was Perry singing. She likes Journey, knows a lot of their songs, even saw them in concert with Perry twice (Departure and ESC4P3 tours), but she could not tell that Perry is not with Journey anymore when she heard the new song. Not to diminish Perry, cause God knows I am a huge fan of his, but I think Steve Augeri does a hell of a job as Journey's "new" frontman.

My post above was NOT meant to cause problems here, I was only responding to NC about what I actually heard on the radio. I've only heard the Journey advertizement twice so far, so I never said that other radio station are not playing Steve Augeri songs on the radio, I'm just telling you what I heard on the two advertizements that I happen to hear.


The first advertizement was a Sacramento classic rock station, and while the DJ was talking about the Journey tour, they were playing songs sung by Steve Perry in the background of the Journey tour advertizement. They did not play any songs sung by Steve Augeri.

Again, not trying to rile anyone up here, just telling you what I heard on the radio. NC brought this subject up, and I just pointed out what I heard on the 2 advertizements that I happen to hear on the radio.


The second time I heard it, I was in Redding Ca in the middle of Shasta Lake on a house boat. We were forced inside the house boat due to a very windy thunderstorm, when my daughter & friend of hers were flipping through the radio stations trying to find a good song to listen to. They came across the song, "Wheel in the Sky" sung by Steve Perry & stopped right there.


IMMEDIATELY RIGHT AFTER THE SONG ENDED, the Dj started talking about the Journey tour, NO other songs were played, just him talking about the Journey tour.

I'm not debating with anyone here what should be playing on the advertizement, NOR did I say that I liked the idea, OR that I didn't like the idea, I just shared with NC what I heard on the radio with those two particular advertizements.

Jrnyman, I couldn't have called ANYONE on the house boat because of the thunderstorm & NO signal to call out on my cell phone. I was just happy that I was getting to "wait out" the thunderstorm listening to Steve Perry sing!!!

Now, about Shasta..what is up with that place? Arguably the finest lake in the USA, and the weather has been hit and miss. I just got rained on all weekend...and now, it's 88 degrees and sunny...

Apology Accepted Rock'ndeano! I don't know about this crazy weather either that we're having in Northern Ca. It usually doesn't rain this much this time of year. Shasta Lake is just Beautiful!!! We had ALOT of fun, despite the thunderstorm.

This is an unfortunate reality and there is nothing wrong with it. I only wish radio would also attempt to play a little 'new' Journey...but that is a pipedream at the moment.

Sorry, I never meant to imply that you needed to call someone right away.

They are using "Don't Stop Believin' to promote Journey here at the "Summer Celebration." Perry, the voice of Journey, is necessary to draw a crowd and they know it. Do any of you think that anything that Journey has put out in the past few years would draw a crowd?
A year or so ago, I did hear short, short clips of Augeri singing the songs that Perry's voice made hits to promote a concert. Yes, I know that Perry didn't make them hits by himself. He had some help from his sidemen.

I want to know who "they" is. If you are referring to the band, then you are dead wrong! We know that the band is sending out all promotional material featuring Steve Augeri on vocals. In fact, I am pretty sure that Perry mandated this! I remember that Perry demanded that all Journey releases be labled with the band members names on it so there would be NO confusion about who is in the band!

Yes, I do...IF RADIO WOULD HAVE PLAYED THE MUSIC!!
Higher Place is a great song to attract people with, plus, Journey has continued to play that one in concert. If Remember Me had been handled properly then it would have been huge. And it would have also taken care of the Perry issues a lot sooner. There are many hits on Arrival and I think WAFTE and ICB could have done well for RED13 (if that had been the focus with RED13, but it wasn't).

Again, you would be a fool if you thought Journey should abandon their catalog of hits. And Perry's voice was ON those hits, as you followed up with, it did not solely make them hits. But of course, instead of giving the rest of the guys any respect you blast them by calling them 'sidemen'.

No, everyone is doing lead vocals because the FANS enjoy it in concert. Journey is giving US what WE want. it gives the band even more depth, gives the band more directions they can follow. Journey is no longer a band stuck within the rock ballad mode that Perry created. Perry's vocals were always better suited for slower, more "emotional" material. Now the band can spread out, rock out, go bluesy, etc.

He "hacks it" just fine. Is he as great as Perry was? No. But he is good, very good. AND he had the ability to sound similar to Perry!
