Wow, sounds incredible. I wonder if the set list will change much as the tour progresses. I know there may be special guests at various stops, which may necessitate altering the set. Were there any special guests last night? Looking forward to Deano filling us in...

WOW is right!

I'm typing this with my hypocrite hat on as I've complained about a GH set for the last several years, however, I wonder if this setlist is able to keep the interest of the casual fan - especially considering they are playing several larger venues.

For me - I am really excited....BUT I will need to get my hands on a new CD so I'm familiar with those songs. For me, it is hard to hear a song for the first time at a show.

SEVEN songs from "Generations"!!!!!!
And the first half of the set, WOW!!!

I am SO Excited NOW!

Now I am curious, TEN songs before Steve has a 'lead' vocal...Is he on stage that whole time doing background vocals/guitar/something?

Good question, jrnyman28. I would like to know if he plays guitar on this tour at all.

Nothing off Trial by Fire or Arrival...great setlist, but I would have liked to have seen Higher Place and maybe Message of Love.
And wasn't Mother Father and absolute fan favorite last time around.? I DO wish the guys would retire Open Arms and Loving Touchin Squeezin.
Yeah, I am nitpicking.

Dump Open Arms and Escape and add something from TBF, Arrival and Red 13. I also hope they add Winds Of March during the first half.

Yeah, I am really suprised at the sheer abundance of Rolie-era material being played. I thought they'd play 2 or 3 songs tops.

This is quite the set list. Interesting to see how long they keep it before removing some tracks. I think the amount of Rolie songs will be greatly dwindled.

Also, shouldn't Lights be played early on, like before the intermission, as it's from the early days? It seems like they are going for some attempt at chronological album order until after the intermission. Oh well.

Postscript:

Fans at BT are already whining about the setlist, bemoaning the dearth of "Arrival" "Trial by Fire" or "Red 13" tunes being played.
Jeez, won't these people ever be satisifed?
A hefty chunk of the set list is already comprised of largely unknown material (be it obscure classics or new stuff), do these loons wish to alienate the entire audience? Do they not understand that at each venue there is more than just the 1000 hardcore members of BT in attendance?
To hell with Arrival and Red 13. Their time has already unceremoniously come and gone. Now its time to push Generations!
Some people, I tell yah.

Who'd u like to see cover it; Steve or Deen?

My vote is Steve.

I already have a boot of him covering Infinity's "Opened the Door" and he does a good job with it. I think he'd likewise be capable of doing "Winds of March" proud.

I know they have to play WITS, but that is worn out, too. Escape is my favorite Journey song, so I don't want that dumped! Don't know what they could dumo, but I would love to see them add the following:

City of the Angels
Too Late
Patiently
Message of Love
Higher Place

I have read more reviews. Steve DOES play guitar on the tour, he is playing early on in the show so his IS out on stage. Steve even makes a comment about how ludicrous it is for him to being playing with NEal!

I agree about Open Arms and LTS!

But I can understand why there was no Arrival or RED13. Arrival, Sony's last baby; RED13, an experimental EP--------SEVEN OR EIGHT SONGS FROM "GENERATIONS"!!!

I really do want to hear WAFTE live some day, but I see why this is not the time. As for TBF, they have played it in the past but I don't miss it particularly.

Seems to me Journey is playing the maximum amount of songs from the new CD as they can. They really seem to be trying to promote it as much as they can. I wonder what kind of marketing plan there is behind GENERAITONS. Anyone know any details?

Yeah - I would have thought if that many Pre-Perry songs were going to be done then it would be "To play some Music", On a Saturday night" and "For You"....the more poppy stuff.....

Interesting at any rate

My guess:

The same as Red 13.
Once the tour is over it will be sneak onto music store shelves with very little fanfare to herald its arrival.

I don't think so. Everything seems to be pointing to a larger push for this CD. But, you could be right since they ARE pushing it in concert and they ARE giving away the CD, Journey might just send it to stores and sees what happens.

But I can still see a possible single. By testing the waters through the concerts and breeding familiarity with the public, there might just be a single with some attention.

I was very surprised to hear that Deen did "Something To Hide"! That is the one song I thought Journey should never attempt. And that leads so easily into "Winds Of March" that they could have easily played that one as well. But those two songs, IMO, are the best moments of Journey on record. It is ok if they do not recreate that.

My ABSOLUTE favorite as well NiG!!!! Wheel in the Sky IS great live, but it wouldn't destroy me if they dropped it. Nice selection of tunes you got there...I'd like to hear them live as well...;)

NealisGod...

I have changed my mind. Open Arms was awesome last night.. a crowd favorite, as was Wheel in the Sky. Escape didn't do as well as those two. Patiently was awesome. For those folks to bitch about the setlist...screw them. I think too much Generations was played. They lost the crowd a little..People could be heard saying, "play something we know!" It was too much new, and too much obscure IMO...

Think of the hits they didn't play.. or could have-

I'll be alright without you
Ask the Lonely
Girl Can't Help It
When You Love a woman

Also, I am glad no Red 13 or Arrival..the crowd was lost already...some walked out, but they were assholes anyway. I would think Neal and the boys will read some intelligent reviews and make adjustments. I liked the entire show, but I was afraid of the fickle audience..which was very lame..what you expect, Irvine..yuppy, conservative GOP headquarters...that city is so fucking stuffy it made me sick..Cops walking through the parking lot, LOOKING for problems, or CREATING problems...and if you are from Irvine, I am not sorry..your city sucks ass..move already..

We can always count on Deano to tell it like it is! I hate the fans who yell at bands to play songs. Are they too stupid to realize there's a set list?

Deano, did you see Augeri having trouble with his zipper? I hear he had problems onstage.

Yeah. I don't think it was his zipper for his crotch..I think it was his mic hookup.

Very odd too. During the first half Augeri would disappear for about 4 songs..Jon sang a bunch of tunes. I said before he couldn't sing..I was wrong  Augeri does play guitar and you can hear it too.

A note on sound quality. Beautiful! Everything was perfect. Vocals were crisp; like I said, Augeri was phenominal last night. the guitar was perfect..loud and clear..everything..was nice.. not like the Main Event tour...

Many over at BT would disagree with you. In fact some have gone so far to call for Augeri's removal from the group after last nite's performance.
I mean, some people are really enflamed about this.
One guy who claims to be a long time fan for 30 years has been incessantly writing posts in all CAPS stating, no, rather make that demanding that...

"DEAN SHOULD, OR SHOULD I SAY, NEEDS TO BE THE FRONT MAN IN THIS BAND. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!"

What an A-hole.

You can never please those people over there. How about the one who posted a review about "how Steve perry has lost it!" They are fucked up beyond belief over there. I thought Augeri was fine and his stage presence was good.

By the way, if they are real fans, they would know it's DEEN not DEAN!!

They are probably the "heads" from Melodicrock that are over there upsetting the cart.

I especially like this one;

"Couldn't figure out what was going on for the first 45 minutes....Steve wasn't on the stage, and all the lyrics were being 'mouthed' by Dean...while the camera focused in on him. What was that all about?"

This dunder-head apparently thinks Deen was just "mouthing" along to a song being played in the background. This is the second time I have read a review like this (first one was last year). Do people really need their hands to be held and told.."Pssst..the drummer is now singing".

I wait for over 20 years to see Journey and when I do the set list is awful, the lead singer does not sing for an hour and it cost me a lot of cash to travel from the UK.

Anyone want to buy an air ticket ????????

I will probably sit in the bar until after the interval when they play the decent songs. I could just imagine Steve Perry agreeing to strum a guitar for an hour and not sing....I like both Perry and Augeri but this policy of everyone singing apart from the singer for an hour is ludicrous..........OK Mr Plant you stand over there as John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page will do the singing for a while.........it would not happen in Zep or any other band.....Ime just so pissed that i save up, wait all these years and get this disjointed show........

I'm sorry, but are we looking at the same set list?
It's 3 hours + of Journey music (old and new).
This is literally the band's most ambitious and encompassing set list ever.

DarrenUK wrote:..........OK Mr Plant you stand over there as John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page will do the singing for a while.........it would not happen in Zep or any other band

Semi-amusing, but ultimately meaningless analogy, this is Journey, sir. Not Led Zep or any other group.
Frankly, who cares what those other bands would and would not do?

DarrenUK wrote:.....Ime just so pissed that i save up, wait all these years and get this disjointed show...

I sympathize with you, but I really have no idea what you were expecting.
From what I can tell, this set list is every hardcore Journey fan's dream come true.

Again, vocal diversity is not automatically equated with being sub- standard.

I think they should lose Who's Crying Now. One of my least favorite Journey songs. Rest of the show looks good. Will miss not hearing things from TBF, Red, and Arv. But good point is people want to hear the hits, and they need to get Generations heard,-ERIC
