Time Travel?

Ok, I'm in a bit of an etherial mood. I blame tofu (it makes me dimensionally shift, but that's another topic!).
So this topic popped in my head and I was curious.

If you were given a choice (time travel permitting) would you rather see Journey and/or Styx now (with the altered line-ups)
or back in the final days of the ROR/Kilroy tours?
Knowing that each band was at the end of the road for their original runs.
Knowing what we now know of the general morale of each band at the time.

I'm mainly curious because I was an avid fan of both when they broke up and never got to see them live (except on video) until the reunion tours.

I would ONLY see the ROR and Kilroy tours because I was unable to see those lineups play. Had I EVER seen those lineups play live, there is NO WAY I would see ROR or Kilroy live...

That's a trick question, because for Journey, Valory and Smith wasn't there for the ROR tour. But, considering that I have gotten to see the present Journey at least once, I would want to go back and see them with Perry - same for Styx and DeYoung..only because I have never gotten a chance to see them perform live.

I saw the ROR tour (still have the program) and even though I do not like the album, seeing them with Perry made up for having to see Randy Jackson with the tight leather pants with big polka dots all over them.

I also saw Journey on their last tour, and I can honestly say I enjoyed the last tour more. The ROR Journey is so bizarre to me. I remember thinking how disappointed I was in this new "direction" the band was taking.

As for Styx, I guess the Kilroy tour.

That was my thinking at the time as well.
Nevertheless, when ROR and Caught in the Act came out, I certainly didn't think they the respective bands' swan songs.

I've seen the reunion tours (Styx with and w/out DeYoung) several times as well as Perry's FTLOSM tour. They were all great, but they've had the distinct feeling of being encore presentations; epilogues if you will.

The thing that got me on this topic was Queen's album Innuendo. When it came out, I just thought it wsa a great Queen album. Now in hindsight, I realize it was recorded by a band that knew it was their final curtain call.

Time(no pun intended), to drop a bomb here..........

I have just been listening to ROR era live shows and while the band seems to play a lot faster, Perry was out of his mind ridiculous! This dude, was singing his ass off, and making new sounds that weren't on the record, I could go on and on. He sounded amazing, and NO ONE Preson imo, had the showmanship Perry had..In the audio tapes I have, his singing is so confident... The only drawback I can hear, is Neal was a bit drowned out..Purposely?

Yeah, I would go back. But those gay perm haircuts, and those faggy pants, and the keytar? What the fuck is up with that? That to me is gay British chik-dude music, ala Duran Duran..Hey by the way, where is that fuck journeytroll at??

Schon, WAS drowned out of the lot of the mix. Sup with that? And the tunes, especially the ROR material and AWYWI was punked up. AWYWI was over in like 1:30. I think of the Stones' '81 tour when I hear that style of play.

Seriously, Journey played Don't Fight it live on the Frontiers tour. The boot I have is the encore song from Budakon. It sounded good.

Need I even reply, LOL? I would love to have the priviledge of seeing an ROR performance. That's the one I was going to get to see but the concert was cancelled because Jon go the flu or something. In fact, I would rather see that tour than any other. I like Styx with DDY, but I wasn't all that much of a fan.

The more I hear of the ROR tour (as opposed to the CD) I really want to hear/see this footage. I look forward to the Mountain Aire DVD more than the Houston DVD. But the Houston one will be bigger because EVERYONE remembers that one! I really wish I could get a live CD of an ROR tour...

I was actually front and centre at the Mountain Aire Festival..

48,000 fans, I believe four bands..Andy Taylor, Outfield, and someone else..

Anyway, for those that have seen "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever", there is footage of that show, as well as Girl Can't Help It.

It is in the California Mother lode country, about 60 miles south of Sacramento, in the mountains.The band comes in via helicopters..pretty cool.

Now, for the music.

After saying how well Perry sang, he at the same time really didn't sound very good frankly..I mean he is Steve Perry, so of course he is better than most when he has the flu...you can sing well, just not sound all that hot..ask Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams.

Anyway, the music was played WAY too fast, the words flew by. Anyway You Want It was in fact about 1:30 in length. You really couldn't hear Neal all that well. Compared to today, the band sounds much more balanced today. It was a certain time to be sure, and at that time, I guess it was ok to have perms and for Cainster to play the keytar, but when I look back now, I cringe.....

But they were still big, but were starting to be caught up to...ROR only went double platinum. They played O Sherrie, Strung Out, Foolish Heart, and covers, "Reach Out" and Jailhouse Rock.... That was cool, but the sharp right hand turn from rock to pop had been made.. I could think of lots of songs they could've played besides those five....

With regard to Perry's voice, yes indeed, it was declining, but he pulled it off flawlessly. Hell, can't people go to a show and not be such a critic?

ROR was an okay show, they all sounded great, but you're right Deano, that 'keytar' was fucking ridiculous. My only real complaint about the show and it goes along with the album and the state of the band at the time, Perry was running everything without regard to Schon or Cain. He turned LTS into an church like choir song, I thought I was gonna throw up. That and Randy's pink polka dot bass and spandex pants, lord help us!!

Yeah Randy looked an oversized oreo cookie, in a dress 4 sizes too short..

However, he sure could play that thing. I personally think he sounds better than Ross everytime I hear him. Just more knockin' thumpin' more identifiable..

My God, how did Schon stand it? When Randy went near him on stage he must've just wanted to run, not walk out to one of the wings. Looking back on that footage, Neal's probably the only one (maybe THE GLORIOUS VOICE too) who doesn't have to avert his gaze. What was JC wearing, a smock or a tunic? Not as bad as his Bad English look on the '89 cover of the debut album, though.

And, oh yea Dean: Andy Fucking Taylor was there? He's cool man. His day job of course is kinda squatting in poprock band, but christ can he rock. Some of the DD tracks have the heaviest guitars in popmusic. And Check out the 2 Powerstation albums. What was he doing there?

Dig it . 48 large that must've been a spetacle. JRNY at the end of the hight of their power. For the record, though it was the end of what some might call their halcyon dayz, the band's better and tighter now. THE VOICE could flat out bring it back on that tour, though.

Hey Deano,

I was at the Mountain Aire show, too - August of '86. Beautiful sunny day, capped off with Journey. I think the other band on the bill that day was Device ... Wow, almost 20 years ago ... I spoke with SP in '94 during a radio call-in for the FTLOSM tour and mentioned the show and he remembered the exact day - August 23rd ... not too bad of an opening night for the last tour ... Saw them again in October '86 here in NY and he wore a Mets jersey while singing "Don't Stop Believing" ... the night after Bill Buckner ... and the rest was history ...

Yes, dude it was classic.
That area if you're not familiar is a huge inbreeding ground (Camden being right across the Delaware from Philly but being in NJ) for both Flyers and Devils fans and worked it to the T. JRNY was the name on the back.
