I'm curious as to what five songs you all would recommend to showcase what you believe to be the best Journey has to offer to someone interested in them.

I'd bust it up into past and present.

Past: Stone In Love, Keep On Running, Positive Touch, Liberty, I'll Be Alright, Separate Ways, Any Way You Want It, Loving, Touching Squeezing.
Gun To My Head, I'd roll out Stone In Love

Present: Higher Place, Remember Me, The Time, Faith In The Heartland, The Place In Your Heart, We Will Meet Again

Push Comes To Shove, I'd trot out The Time.

Well, to me there are three schools of thought: 1) Play the new stuff to represent what Journey is today, or 2)The best of the best, or 3) cover their entire history and evolution.

2)Mother, Father
Winds Of March
Separate Ways
Higher Place
Feeling That Way/Anytime

3)Spaceman
Something To Hide
Little Girl
I'll Be Alright Without You

It is really hard to cover so much ground with just 5 songs.
Get "In The Beginning" for pre-Perry history.
Get "Greatest Hits" for Perry Era history.
Get "Generations" for today's.

NealIsGod, and J28 LITTLE GIRL....what a song. The last minute and a half or so with the acoustic (harp?), harmonica and THE VOICE and Neal dueting the "wwwwooooooooooooooooooo"s really softly.....

It's not one of my tops but man the end of that song works me up. If I misted up because of music it would be during that 90 or so seconds.

Jawdroppingly beautiful and simple piece I think Neal's dad came up with.

I think of my mom, who does not have cancer, when I hear it.

I am familiar with Journey. I have most of their material up to Arrival. Have not gotten Generations, though the clips were interesting.

With any band that has longevity and some level of success (subject to interpretation of course) it is hard to name only 5. I gave that number to give a starting point. I've done it with Styx and Dennis DeYoung on other boards. It becomes harder to name only 5 when you have so many options and there is so much to like about a band...in any incarnation.

Yeah, to me that song is unbelievably emotional. Neal is white hot on that tune, and so is Steve.

So true Sadie. When a band has evolved as much as Journey has, with so many lineup and styles, it is near impossible to narrow it down. But great idea.

I generally don't favor ballads as a rule....but god almightly is that thing unbelievable.

The Party's Over is also a great choice by you. To me, that track, despite Cain's absence, is where they started to shift gears into ESC4PE-sounding music. Maybe also b/c of Rolie's absence.

Yes, kind of neat how it is the last track on Captured, and the only studio track. I love that song. Just makes me happy!

It does tend to make one happy and pick you up, which belies the dark tone of the lyrics. Awesome track, with Neal's opening riffs setting the tone.

Mother, Father is their second most emotional song, IMO. I love Neal's nice, dainty solo in the first part of the song, followed by his ferocious, angry solo later on. Kicks me in the gut...

Sadie, I'd tell the person to get all the CDS cheap on eBay and listen to them all. Some of the lesser played or heard songs might surprise the person.

Someone being unaware of Journey is not out of the realm of possibility. There are many classic rock acts that younger people may not know about. Seems pretty straight forward to ask what songs you would recommend to get someone acquainted with the band.

It goes to personal taste. Everyone has differing elements that they like. It's just a fun way to find out what you all prefer.

I did something like this for a friend of mine a number of years ago. We actually did an exchange -- she's a big Crowded House fan, so she gave me a tape of her favorite CH songs and I gave her one of my favorite Journey tunes. While she definitely knew the hits, she's never been a big fan so wanted a sampling of why **I** liked 'em. I'd have to find the copy I made for myself to remember what they all were, but I know I broke it down to two categories -- favorite hits & favorite album tracks. I'm pretty sure this was pre-Arrival, so nothing from the current line up was on the tape. Also burned a 2-CD set for my mom one year when she asked to hear some songs because she was so curious about this band I keep going to see in concert. The funny thing is the only song she thought sounded familar was "Of a Lifetime", which I am SURE she'd never heard before in her life! LOL!

Anyway... 5 songs off the top of my head...

If I were picking 5 songs and only 5 songs, I'd pick one from each of era of the bands history, so they could see how versatile Journey is and while they have changed over the years, in some ways, they have stayed the same.

1. Anyway - LITF
2. Precious Time - Departure
3. Troubled Child - Frontiers
4. Can't Tame The Lion - TBF
5. Faith In The Heartland - Generations

I think these are 5 of the best, not so familiar, but a strong show case of what this band has been and is capable of.

1. Escape (embodies everything Journey is)
2. La Raza Del Sol (showcases their musicianship)
3. Just the Same Way (vintage Journey at its best)
4. Higher Places (Steve Augeri brings Journey back with this one)
5. Anyway You Want (classic Journey)

I'm a big fan of Journey past and present so anything is good.....

Notice Back Talk is not on this list. Are we all in agreement that this is Journey's worst song ever?

Back Talk fits my son to a "T" so it holds a place in my heart!

I think "Eyes Of A Woman" is MY least favorite song. That song flat out BORES me!
