I Just Got a New DVD

It's not Journey, or Perry. It's Josh Groban. I know this is a Journey forum and I'm getting to the connection. At least it's a connection from my perspective. As I'm listening to Josh's glorious voice I've had a sort of epiphany pertaining to the effect that Steve Perry's voice has on me, and many of my friends.

Even though many of Josh's songs aren't even in English, what he's saying reaches his audience. Even though many of his songs could probably be performed more technically correctly by a Pavoratti, Domingo, or Bocetti(sp), Josh's fans prefer to hear Josh sing them. It may be because when the classically trained opera tenors sing they're just showcasing their vocal abilities, the heart and soul of the song doesn't come through for us the way it does when Josh sings. An opera fan would most likely disagree with this theory, but Josh's fans aren't, for the most part, opera fans.

Maybe a version of that theory could explain why so many Journey and Perry fans can't get the same feeling from the current band as we did when Steve was at the helm. The heart and soul of the vocal perfomances is gone. No matter how well Augeri and Castranova(sp) perform the songs, they're just singing the songs to the best of their abilities. The heart and soul of the what made Journey special for us isn't there. It was the heart and soul of the voice. At least that's the case for me. I can't rightly speak for anyone else.

I'm not looking for anyone to agree with my theory. I certainly don't even expect anyone here to carry on an intelligent discussion about it(with the possible exception of Dave, and then not here). I was just offering one possible explanation for the deep division between what was once Journey's fan base.

I'm sure fans of the current singers will avow their undying declarations to what they consider the heart and soul that those guys put into the music. If they're happy with them, well, so be it. Perry-Journey fans know the difference. Maybe the rest of you are happier because you don't.

How many times can one possibly wrap and re-gift wrap the same freeze-dried, dehydrated old turd of an issue?
You don't like Augeri.
Good lord in heaven, woman, I assure you, we all FRICKIN get it.
Doesn't matter how you say it or how long it takes you to say it or how politely you put it, every post seems to amount to the same thing around here.

P.S. Andrea "the italian ray charles" Boticelli sings with more heart and soul than Groban could ever hope to aspire to.

There is problem number 1 right there.

You can't get the same feeling because you haven't listened to the current Journey..the ONLY Journey.

O come on, there are intelligent people on here(of course NOT me, but surely 28 is not the only one).

No need to go, but seriously - The same old discussions have been done and done to death.

WE ALL LOVE STEVE PERRY!!

But it's not 1983 anymore and we must accept that and move on.

Well, my name was brought up, and Sherrie is right. I can agree with her analogy to a degree. We have discussed Perry and his high notes, we have discussed Perry and his emotive lower register. What is the commong bond...Perry. Sherrie is right that, for some, the magic is just plain gone. What it was that moved them was something more than the high notes and more than the emotion. It was something that only Perry could possess.

Now the question is, why bother to continue beating this theory down the throats of those that have found another magic? It is not the same magic as Perry...but it is still magic to us.

And for the record, I agree with TNC that Andrea Boticelli has more talent and emotion than Josh Groban, and quite possibly Mr. Perry himself.

You know what? I DON'T CARE if Perry can't sound like 1981, or 1983, or 1996! I would take a coarse Perry. I really would. He gives me chills too. He invokes tremendous memories for me.

I just want him to exert a little EFFORT. Put SOMETHING out already!!

Josh Grobin? Now I see the problem--you don't care for rock & roll.

Exactly. All these Perry diehards also love Clay Aiken, Josh Grobin, and other music that appeals to middle aged women. Their favorite Journey CD is ROR, for crying out loud! They must hate real rock music, which is what Generations is comprised of. Maybe Perry will put out a nice CD of motown favorites or classic Christmas carols.

Here's a funny comic. Just insert Perry as the singer. Hit "Next" for the series.

You know what, I agree with you.

But, Journey's 'heart and soul' is MORE then just the voice. If you can't see and feel that, then I doubt you ever fully experienced what Journey has to offer. You only experience what Perry has to offer...and you are a Perry fan, and were never really a Journey fan.

Well said. Perry's voice is what first attracted me to Journey, but then I discovered the incredible playing of Neal Schon, the songwriting skills of Cain, Schon and Perry, and realized Journey was much more than just Perry.

My favorite line that had me LMAO:

Are you all getting bored with the current line up AGAIN! There must not be enough excitement going on with the current Journey, so you have to resort to talking about Perry fans instead.

"many Perry-onlies really don't like Rock music".

That was a ridiculous statement! Gee talking about making generalizations about a group of fans. We are all individuals with "individual tastes" in music.

We "Perry only fans" as YOU call us, just happen to SHARE A HUGE APPRECIATION of Steve Perry's MUSIC & TALENT!!! :D :D

None of you seem to like true rock music. Tell me what rock music you like?

And CLEARLY there must not be enough going on CURRENTLY with Perry for you to come here and feel the need to re-hash the umpteenth variation on "Perry is better than Augeri".
For pete's sake, get a fucking life.

NIG, I like Rock music & other varities of music, but I don't feel comfortable sharing here.

Why not? I am just interested in the rock music you and other Perry fans enjoy. Do you like harder rocking stuff in addition to Journey?

I'll debunk a few myths here. I prefer Perry over Augeri, not a big deal.

I also Love:

Metallica
Def Leppard
Evanesence
The Cult
David Bowie
Jane's Addiction
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Lynard Skynard
Aerosmith
Motley Crue
Black Sabbath

Shoot, look at my sig... Play it LOUD for me... the louder the better. If I can headbang, I'm a happy camper.

So the arguement that 'many perry fans don't like rock' doesn't cut it. Putting "many" in the sentence is a generalization, and is not necessarily fact. Most of my friends that also like Perry like similiar music to me and find Josh Grobin or whatever his name is to be boring.

I'm one "Perry fan" that is pretty tired of the generalizations made about those of us that prefer Perry. I dont make generalizations about those that prefer Augeri. Please stop. Thank you.

Sorry, but I'm not the one posting and re-posting the same devisive old garbage.
You created this post, that, for all it's verboseness, essentially amounts to two words "Augeri stinks!".
You prefer Perry and simply cannot and will not accept anyone else in the band.
Great.
We ALL get it.
But why the need to bring this here and state it for the gazillionth time?
Even this site's normally genteel moderator has been reduced to now telling you ladies forthright to "move on with your life" and "enough shit stirring".
Do us all a favor and heed his advice.

There is a BIG difference between the Journey fans who "prefer Perry" and those who "obstinately refuse to listen to anyone BUT Perry and are disgruntled and purposely start shit here on MR.com".
I think a majority of JRNY fans "prefer Perry", but, you know what?
The guy is retired and there is nothing wrong with giving another deserving singer the spot.
Many of us who "prefer Perry" understand that, these "Perry-onlys" don't, and simply wish to damper the enjoyment of those who have found that the Journey can indeed go on.

Yeah, I said PERRY-ONLYs. HOTS, PF, PROPERRY, those who won't even give Augeri or the new, harder-rocking Journey a chance. Now that Neal's running the show, they seem to flock to Josh Grobin and Clay Aiken! But that's ok, some of us prefer harder rock, some prefer the lighter. But it's all good!
