My Evening with Journey

I never really pictured myself spending an evening with the rock band Journey, yet that’s just what I, along with several thousand screaming Journey fans, did this past Wednesday at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.
A balmy evening gave way to a cool breeze as the concert got off to a mellow start, with the band kicking off the show playing songs described as “pre-Steve Perry” by the band themselves. Young and old alike reveled in the classics (some going back 30 years) as they were embellished by the long, meaty riffs of guitarist Neal Schon. After a handful of songs, lead singer Steve Augeri made his presence felt, proving to be a worthy successor to the band’s former front man, Steve Perry. His lively rendition of “Any Way You Want It” brought the house down before intermission, even prompting a group of teens near me to dance maniacally to the hit from 1980. This is a song that their parents probably listened to on the radio during their first date. Who knew there were so many younger Journey fans?
The second half of the show got right down to the business of rocking, featuring Schon’s spectacular version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which brought the lighters out. They stayed lit for “Wheel in the Sky,” “Lights,” and “Open Arms.”
Finally, after nearly three and a half hours of hits, the band closed with an incredible performance of their biggest hit, “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The crowd erupted into a sea of applause and lighters, and I was left with little doubt that most of them would gladly spend many, many more evenings with Journey.
