Hope u like it. I think it's one of their finest releases in quite some time.

Arguably, the cd could be more melodic. The rock is perhaps too hard-edged at times. But overall it's a good cd. First four and the last two tracks are the most immediately catchy and melodic. The others take some repeated listens, but are winners all the same (excluding tracks 5 & 6)

also, heads up- the cd sounds waaaay better on head phones.
So i recommend trying it that way.

Hi,

I too want to hear Generations. I remember a while back that they weren't actually going to be selling it, but I guess that seems to have changed.

I didn't really care for Arrival, but I want to give Generations a chance. I have heard it's better than Arrival. Is that true?

Thanks.

Maybe not at the very, very beggining, but for some time they talked about officially selling it at the end of the tour.

It's not my fav, but there's some good stuff on there. What are your objections with it?

Spew wrote:I have heard it's better than Arrival. Is that true?

It's hard to say. Depends on what you expect from a Journey album. If you're looking for some sort of Greatest Hits volume II replete with absolutely nothing but immediate, radio-friendly tunes, I advise u look elsewhere.

It feels strange to have had a CD for months before it is in stores. I remember getting to record stores the day a Journey album came out to buy it on vinyl AND cassette!

Yeah, that's a winner. Great ballad.
If schmaltzy, sentimental ballads are ur bag, I strongly recommend investing in Arrival, too.
Loads of kleenex fare on that one, as well.
I think u might like it.

Not usually into the ballads but I think this is one of their best. Better than Faithfully and Open Arms imo, or am I just burned out on them. I think this one has the potential to make an impact on AC radio if it gets out there. I'm assuming AC hasn't changed that much since WYLAW's release, as I don't listen to those stations. The vocals and music on this one are outstanding.

It's funny that many people do not like KTYLM while others think it is great. I immediately heard radio potential with it. HOT AC, AC, CHR POP, even maybe the R&B stations as there is just enough gospel-like flare to it. I love the way the song builds to that one high (albeit falsetto) note and then the band joins back in with the harmonies! I got chills. Maybe it is burnout on the other songs...but this is far better than All The Way and some of the others on Arrival AND TBF. Jon said he wants a hit for Steve and Deen. He also spoke proudly of this song. This could be it IF Sanctuary, radio and THE BAND do what is necessary!

Though R&B and soul have always been an inherent part of Journey's sound, some people simply did not care for the motown-esque delivered harmonies.
People claimed it was too Mariah Carey-like or too Boyz2Men-ish.
I think it's a great ballad.
It's unfortunate placement after two songs of dawdling mediocrity sully it a bit though.

I agree, the almost scream right before the incredible "you lift me up" and the way Steve comes back in "haw-If I should fall"--awesome. If they don't push this one with potential it has to make people appreciate new Journey, there will be no sense in ever trying again with something else. Several of these songs are too good to be wasted.

As much as I like this song, I don't think it should be pushed as a single. "Arrival" was pushed from a ballad-centric marketing perspective. "All the Way" and "With Your Love" were sent to stations to little avail. If they are even going to try at all, I'd rather it be done with some up-tempo stuff like TPIYH or FITH.
At least I can stand steadfastly proud behind that material-sink or swim

I do think they should only release a ballad for radio after a couple of rockers have been given a chance. I would prefer that they have success with a rock song, but think a ballad might have the best chance these days.

I am with Tails on this. Journey need to focus on a couple of rockers first, but then they can unload this song on the public, broaden the rasio format appeal, and hopefully knock one out of the park. But they should NOT guve up on this CD. Whether the singles get attention or not, there should be at least 2 rockers and a ballad released. Hell, I would LOVE to see OOHW released!!

And I was one of the people who mentioned the Boyz2Men sound of the song. But THAT is why I think it has legs on radio...

Yes. Absolutely. The NO BRAINER is "A Better Life." That song is head and shoulders above KTYLM.

BUT, release the rocker first...TPIYH 1st, then ABL and then something else..

You guys are nuts. Gone Crazy is by far the best choice for a single!

I agree OOHW would be awesome, especially considering how the lyrics are so timely.
I think ABL is a good song, but I don't see it making an impact as a single, its too mid tempo imo. I think a rocker or a true ballad would have a better chance.

If ABL got on top 40, I guarantee you a top ten single..Guaranteed.

It's also too protracted. I played it for a friend the other day. Nice tune, he exclaimed, too bad it never goes anywhere. I think that's a bit harsh, however, the song does seem a bit needlessly drawn-out. Not by "Believe" proportions, mind you, but slightly drawn out nonetheless.

Whittle down the ending by a smidgeon, and u do have a very single-friendly tune.

Whatever.. That is the most obvious tune to play on radio..

A Better Life...My wager is that Mgt.(I use the term loosely), doesn't want to "upstage" Augeri. I personally don't give a pidgeons dick..This is a top ten single...

WTF with the argument it "doesn't go anywhere?" Open Arms went "nowhere." So did Anyway you Want It." Who gives a shit?

And "Ooops I did it again" sure told the story didn't it?

Jesus mother and the donkeys...

I don't know how mgmt. feels, but I do not like the idea of a Journey hit with someone else on vocals. Steve deserves the recognition. After he has a hit, they can release what ever they want IMO.

As for "not going anywhere", I agree. The song does not build. It does not change tempo, or rhythm, or scale. It is a great song lyrically and Deen sings it well. It has an interesting lyric pattern over the beat (much like Send Her My Love did). But it "goes" nowhere. Open Arms built up nicely. AWYWI did to.

Maybe you think so. I don't. TPIYH is a concise, catchy, self-contained little firecracker of a song.

Rock'ndeano wrote:A Better Life...My wager is that Mgt.(I use the term loosely), doesn't want to "upstage" Augeri. I personally don't give a pidgeons dick..This is a top ten single...

Maybe.
But then again, Jon's song, "Every Generation", has been released to VH1 classic (from the Sturgis show).
They don't seem afriad of upstaging or overshadowing Augeri.

Rock'ndeano wrote:WTF with the argument it "doesn't go anywhere?"

It meanders and flounders about unsatisfyingly towards the end. Needs a minute shaved off.

Rock'ndeano wrote:Open Arms went "nowhere." So did Anyway you Want It."

No, they didn't. They were concise, self-contained and packed a considerable melodic punch. Just like TPIYH. As soon as the song ends you want to hear it again.

Rock'ndeano wrote:And "Ooops I did it again" sure told the story didn't it?

This is not a valid comparison. Britney's salacious image is intrinsically intertwined with how many units she sells. Her record sales work in conjunction with mtv and all of the surrounding media publicity. Her songs are destined to sell big before they come out (regardless if they are good or bad) because of all the media coverage she gets.
Journey, sadly, is not afforded such a benefit.

Totally. I mean, it's like my 3rd favorite song on the disk, but even I see that it sorta meanders directionless towards the end.

They sure did.
