Houston 1981 DVD Update

Postby jrnyman28 » Tue Oct 04, 2005 12:54 am

Thank you Dave at BT.

As reported on http://www.musictap.net:

For the first time on DVD, Columbia and Legacy will issue Live in Houston:1981 Escape Tour for Journey. This set will be 1DVD/1CD big and will contain brand new Stereo and 5.1 mixes. There will also be a 12-page booklet included in the DVD and CD digipak amaray package. Classic Journey with new blood. This one is expected on November 15.

That is great news, Dave. That concert is the best one I have ever seen by any group. Can't wait to replace my VHS copy with the DVD!

The show remastered a booklet plus an accompanying audio cd :?: Awesome and very unJourney like if I may be so bold.

If this is accurate, the packaging sounds phenominal. Maybe they are tryiing to make up for the fact that the DVD only has 14 tracks. But getting a CD of it is very cool.

Not yet, but most guesses think it will be the exact concert eMpTyV aired in 1981.

And the GH DVD! I think it was 6 songs on the DVD that came from this concert. But I do not know the track list of the concert.

I don't remember the order, but some of the songs are:

ESC4P3 (they open with it)
Line of Fire
Still They Ride
Mother, Father
Stone in Love
Don't Stop Believin'
Open Arms
Keep On Runnin'
Anyway You Want It
Lights/Stay Awhile

And I think I remember Dead or Alive and Where Were You, but not 100% sure. I can't remember is LTS and Anyway You want it are on there, but they probably are.

Maybe Red can tell me if I am forgetting anything...

Well the only good part is those cuts on the GH dvd most certainly are not remastered. Just LISTEN to them...There's more energy on the second generation VHS I got from NIG than that so called DVD.

I don't know why anybody would want a DVD/CD combo. All you have to do is rip the DVD audio and burn your own CD. It's fairly simple. Also, I have had most of these songs on CD for more then ten years from the KBFH concert that was broadcast MANY times through the years. In fact, I had a couple extra copies of it that I gave away years ago.

I hope they release two packages...one with and one without the CD. Even if it is just a buck cheaper, I wouldn't buy the CD.

I think most of the songs were listed. A few songs were broadcast the first time but were cut on later airings, I think "Dead or Alive" and some others. Lights/Stay Awhile and "Open Arms" are performed as one block, which I always really liked. They also do "Wheel In the Sky" with a cool intro from Neal and a good instrumental bit in the middle.

Andrew, are you saying you think this might be bogus information? I guess we could ask JDK, but the thing may be out before we get an answer. :)

Well, while the site looks on the up-and-up, it is true that until JDK, Sony, or Journey announce the disc we should take it for what it's worth...but it's a sign of hope.

from nick,
while i agree that official info is best, this guy over at musictap.net is pretty reliable, i have checked his site for music news over the last couple of years and he is pretty much accurate when it comes releases, i am pretty sure he gets his info from the companies, sometimes a company will leak something and not do the press release until a few weeks before the product comes out, anyway i hope this is true

Just the Captured CD. It would be great to have a Captured DVD, wouldn't it?

I think I could be very happy with:

1 dvd of this year's tour
1 dvd of the Arrival Tour
1 dvd of the ROR Tour
1 dvd of the Escape Tour
1 dvd of the Departure Tour
and 1 dvd of the Infinity Tour

I know that excludes Evolution and Frontiers, but with the esception of Departure, each of those dvd's would showcase some BIG changes.

Personally I'd scrap the ROR show in favor of any other tour, although if its released I'll undoubtedly buy it at some point. I've seen some footage of the Escape, Frontiers and ROR tours so I'm most interested in this years tour and something Rolie era. I'd like to see a pre-Perry era show.
Doubtful that will ever happen.

I was going to add the pre-Perry footage, but I figure the Infinity Tour was still pretty heavy with that material. I agree that it is unlikely we will ever see any more than the clip of Robert Fleischman's site.

While ROR is one of my LEAST favorite Journey CDs, the tour footage I have seen (the live videos for GCHI and IBAWY) look great. There was a LOT of energy in the performances. This may not be a great time for the band, but they sure appeared to be having a great time on stage. I do not like seeing Randy and Mike though.....

True, the Infinity tour would include a lot of what I'm interested in seeing.
And while I'm interested in pre-Infinity footage, I can't say that I would enjoy more of Robert's prancing around the stage. I don't mean to bust on him, but I'd prefer pre-Robert. Gotta give it to him on songwriting though. I think the 1977 shows with Perry doing some of the singing would be cool to see.
I'm really hoping they keep at least part of the first set from the current tour on the upcoming DVD. My problem with the ROR show would be not only Randy and Mike but the set list. The great rocking album cuts dropped in favor of the Perry solo tunes and covers. Neal and Perry do appear to be enjoying themselves on GCHI, I believe from the first show of the tour. I'm sure Neal was just happy to be back out there again.
I do recall Neal saying that sometimes he was an like an actor on stage, so that fans would think he was having a good time. It seems sincere on GCHI however.

Agreed! Kinda like watching Freddie Mercury, although he was probably going for the Robert Plant look...

NoMoreTails wrote:I'm really hoping they keep at least part of the first set from the current tour on the upcoming DVD.

If they don't, I don't see much of a point to the DVD. This DVD needs to showcase ALL eras of the band!

I understand. Add to that the new arrangement of LTS! UGH! (from what I have heard).

I am sure there has been a lot of acting from all members of the band at times. All the ROR interviews seem likely to be "fronting". I wonder if some of the TBF interviews were also. But I wouldn't expect any different. These men are professionals.
